In this lesson we explore the 36251 progression and how it can be used to reharmonise jazz standards. The 36251 progression is an extended version of the 251 progression, the most common progression in jazz music.
The 36251 progression can be created from the diatonic 7th chords in any key, and we also have the creative freedom to change the chord qualities - particularly to dominant chords which allows us to add more interesting colours and textures.
Diatonically speaking, the 6 chord is a minor 7th chord. However, when playing jazz music it's common to play the 6 chord as a dominant 7th chord which creates a strong pull into the 2 chord.
When reharmonising jazz standards this progression can be used to great effect. In this lesson we take the Xmas jazz standard "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and reharmonise the original chord changes with a 36251 progression in the key of C Major.
