Hi Ryan, right now I am struggling with all four. I am living a very anxious life, fruit of no having kind of control over my life. I have been following seriously for last year, specially because would like to live the kind of live you are living. I love to read, I love to teach and I want to create a life writer, speaker and teacher. But in doing so, I am not able to progress without taking away 3 or 4 hours of sleep each day, taking away time with my family. I don't know man, sometimes is very difficult to read just a book per week, Taking note cards and try to organize the whole info to create content that matters and give value as you do... Do you have any suggestions about what can I do? How can organize my schedule in order to progress in my goal of becoming an author, without taking away my life? In this point of my life, I am willing to leave bad habits, bad behavior in order to focus hard on what really important: my family and my career

At the age of 59 and coming to a belief in the essential qualities of stoicism only a few years ago I yearn for wisdom and courage, but know I struggle with temperance, and even justice. As an alcoholic now 12 years sober, and longing for a better life each and every day I have learned the extreme value of humility. I feel blessed to understand the importance of it. The aging process is does seem to make having patience (with myself and others) harder in some areas yet easier in others. Thanks Ryan I appreciate these messages and for your continued dedication into living the best life possible.

The fact that you are a recovered alcoholic, suggests to me that you live by 3 of these 4 virtues from that example alone. Wisdom, for knowing that it wasn't doing you any favours (health, social, or otherwise). Temperence, because you knew enough was enough and needed to do something about it. And courage, for admitting you had a problem and taking the steps necessary to overcome it. Hats off to you!

Hey brother, as a young man I feel I learn a lot about people’s struggles and what they have to deal with. I’m sorry for whatever happened in the past years that in a way may have made you into a alcoholic but know you a new man, one who knows the right ways and even at your age you continue to learn… unlike some older people I know that think they know it all and are not open for new ideas. I’m inspired by this and this comes to show I will learn and continue to learn throughout my whole life. Thank you and I hope your journey is going extremely well🙏🏽

How do virtues want us ? 1. Above all, do not lie to my self lh. The man who lies to him self and believes his own lies will eventually become unable to distinguish the truth within him and around him, thus loosing all respect for him self and for others. 2. Courageous towards the enemy. 3. Just as I use my self. 4. Generous towards the vanquished. 5. Polite--always. That is how the 5 cardinal virtues want us.

for me courage is very complex. I have immense courage in a physical sense, I would run into a burning building to save someone, but ask me to speak infront of an audience and I would crumble, I have courage but not in every situation

I've struggled with courage the most. Been having to embrace Amor Fati and momento Mori. As I learn to love everything and just do what feels right. Removing my fear. Doing what feels right for me in each moment responding not reacting. Shattering my fears as they come :).

Subtitles: as someone that English is not my native language. I first came across the podcast and when I found the channel was really happy. Consider the allegory presented in the movie Higlander. The Highlander is ready for anything. He can be placed in any environment with minimal accoutrement and still make his way. The same goes for the stoic. His daily struggles happen on a subtler level however, one easier to ignore. The perfect place to start.

I would say that courage is in between overconfidence and feckless. When the challenge is too great with what is asked of you, when you have an excess of overestimating of one's own abilities or powers. Feckless is when your strength of character fails you in the moment or because it is lacking, or because you have been irresponsible.

Modern Stoicism seems like Platonism for the lazy or the unfortunate who discovered today's Stoicism by chance but never discovered Plato. Wisdom, courage, temperance or moderation, and justice are given a thorough treatment in Plato's Republic. The Republic is largely studied as political work, but that misses the point in many ways. Two main questions one should keep in mind, "What does it mean to be good or just?" and "Why be good or just anyways?". Plato leaves you with tools, or techniques to compartmentalize your mind and truly know thyself. It's a rich spiritual tradition of Western Civilization that has been covered up and pushed to the corner of the library and thought useless for modern times. The Republic is a complex, yet very entertaining read that will show readers with knowledge of Stoicism where many Stoic ideas originated.

You state that there isn't a religious connotation to stoic virtues, there is a however a metaphysical one that you haven't fully addressed. Because the universe is structured in terms of cause and effect which they called Logos, we should therefore behave in a certain way within this orderly system. This goes back of course to the old debate of whether or not we can have an objective morality, if the Stoics did not have these metaphysical beliefs they would not develop these virtues. This why Stoic virtues are different from Spartan virtues which instead emphasize on equality, military fitness, and austerity. Even though there is nothing wrong with pursuing these virtues, if pursed to an excess can potentially lead to communistic societies as we've seen in the past. Although Sparta by definition was a plutocratic society some argue that the very foundations of totalitarianism are found within Spartan civilization in which their virtues partially contributed to and partially led to its downfall.

@@saidanvarnabiev7123 My argument was that Stoic virtues are partially connected to their metaphysical beliefs on the nature of the cosmos, this why their virtues are different from Spartan virtues as I used in comparison. The Spartans had different values so they developed different virtues. So no, my argument isn't invalid.

Actions speaks more than words, I had this thought in my head, stoicism is a practical philosophy, saying things instead of approaching things with virtue doesn't justify your virtuousness. Looking at every experience with as an opportunity for one of the four stoic virtues is how you can properly practically apply our moral will. As we are dependent on the act of our moral will to prove our virtue. So yes, words don't mean nothing, they may be truth, but actions justify those words. Preaching what you say. (And ever better, on a consistent basis.) I hope my thought of action and words help you, I hope you find how you can apply one of the four stoic virtues in this reply just like I found the wisdom in your comment.

There is a cost to virtuous living, you will likely be lonelier & have less material wealth than you could otherwise but the people it sifts from you are not good people and while a person can sell their integrity they cannot buy it back.
