one thing I like about this guy is that he actually plays the shots he wants and doesn’t just tell you. He is actually very good at golf himself unlike some who talk it and never show it

I have played golf for over 50 years. I watched this video a couple of weeks ago. It completely changed my thinking in bunkers, especially the fifth tip. The following day, I holed out of bunkers on back-to-back holes for birdies. Two days later, I holed out again. So I have holed-out three consecutive times out of bunkers over a two day period. I then went through a period where I struggled. I watched this video again a couple of times. The next day, I holed-out my next bunker shot!

Oh MY GOSH!!! I just had a trip to Myrtle Beach with my dad, in fact just finished the 14 hour overnight drive back.. so tired.. any ways.. I watched this video before I went because I am normally terrible out of the sand. And I managed to get in the most traps I have ever been in, lol. This video changed my life!!! Only once did it take me 2 tries out of a bunker. Almost every one came out awesome, a couple thinned but expected that, but so many were beautiful and 3 of them almost went in!! Most were within 2'-6' of the pin!!! The guys I was playing with couldn't believe it because they knew how bad I normally was. From the bottom on my heart THANK YOU!!!

I think your biggest strength is your natural comfort in the sand - I remember seeing this quality in you when I first found your channel 2 years ago. Wow - watched this last evening, played today concentrating on staying low, knees bent and long swing and worked beautifully. 4 sand shots, one of about 30 yards, and all within 10 feet!! I never really understood how to use/control bounce before, even though I have played for years. Honestly the most constructive golf video I have ever watched and been able to put into action. Thanks!!

Always find your tips informative and helpful! With Co-Vid and unmaintained bunkers, we've been dealing with hard sand for a while now. I like a square set up and using a more sharp edged wedge for these shots. I learned a lot from this video today. Keep up the good work

really love this lesson, your best in a while...can you cover dealing with public course bunkers where they are often packed sand and/or almost no sand with a hard base underneath? and in that scenario you either have a short or long sand shot? please,,,with icing on top,,,hope you enjoyed Hideki's big win

All great points!! For me I do find it a bit more difficult to turn my hips on a wide bunker stance. Therefore i have an open stance. Just have to make sure the back foot is square to the target.

Had to tell you that yesterday, I found myself in a bunker. I thought about the mistakes you noted in this video (I usually make several) and thought about the right club to use for the distance (not my usual sand club), opened the face, bent my knees, got my hands low, swung from the shoulders, and hit a beauty to about 18 inches. For the first time in my golf lifetime, I was better from the sand than I was chipping from the short grass!

Nice tips, worth paying attention to. I struggle most with ball position. 1 coach tells me ball towards the left foot, the other 1 back in the stance. Both have magnificent bunker play but all they do is cause me doubt.

Very similar to Stan Utley’s method which I’ve been using over ten years. I was always confident but the square stance, very squatty, and Stan says hands at knee level style has me holing out more often and from a decent lie, I expect to be down in two. Great instruction, as always. PenguinGolf.

Hate green side bunkers. Types of sand is a great point. There’s the bunkers with hardly any sand,(sand is expensive), fluffy sand and of course the sprinkler hard pack bunker. Love the information Matt. You the man, love ya brother!

I just learned the hard truth of this over the weekend. 2nd shot on a par 5 landed in a bunker next to the green. Just grabbed the sand wedge cause it’s my sand wedge. The packed sand made me blade it off the bounce over to the bunker on the other side of the green. Proceeded to chunk two more shots before realizing it’s so packed I could just chip it regularly and that’s how I got out. Saved it with a one-putt for a double and an 87 for the round. But holy cow I need these tips.

I finally broke 80 , Thanks for all the great videos, I hit my driver between 230 & 260 straight down the fairway. I'm finding the greens in regulation . My all around game has improved by 10 strokes. All I say is MR. Short Game. Thank You!

I'm going to say the #1 bunker mistake is never practicing bunker shots. If you don't practice you never discover how easy and fun it is to get out of the bunker. When you practice your fear of being in the bunker is gone and therefore you'll hardly ever hit it in the bunker because you're not scared of it. Bunker practice really is some of the most fun and useful practice you can have. You'll be amazed at how easy it is once you learn the trick and if you don't practice you'll never learn the trick. Yes, there is a trick to it.

You are So right! Folks should get to the course about 45 minutes early and just toss a bunch of balls in the practice bunker. It's amazing how much even 15-20 minutes of just hacking away until you get it can improve not just your game, but your attitude. When you KNOW you can get out of a bunker, all of a sudden you feel empowered from the fairway.

@@GradyElla I couldn't agree more but I'll try. One of the best practice sessions I ever had, and I can still remember it today, was in a deep bunker. First I had to learn the secret of bunker shots and that didn't take long, then I just started playing with how bad the lie can be and still get out and then no matter how the ball laid in the bunker I was trying to see how close I could get to the hole. I had a blast and from that day forward I have no fear of bunkers. The only problem now is when I get into super fluffy sand and I don't expect it. I'm used to hitting out of half dirt half sand.

Thanks for explaining the bounce Matt. I purchased new wedges last year, and everyone preaches that bounce is your friend. Well, the bunkers in my area are all very hard, so my wedge just bounces off the sand and thins the ball...so it looks like I might need to swap out one of my wedges for one with less bounce.

I thought that was north ga :) good tips. I the best advice I got was the lower half of the body needs to be quiet, this is always hard to do UNLESS you take a wide low stance. It's nearly impossible to not have a quiet lower half if you do that. Not even sure if that is good advice (quiet lower body), but definitely wide and low as you specified is.

Less loft, don't use the bounce, shorter swing, less speed, hit closer to the ball. More like a chip or pitch depending on distance to pin. Easy to thin. Much harder than normal or fluffy sand.
