Seriously, FORGET any other introduction tutorial which may exist! This guy really is the way forward. His formula's are so easy to grasp and there is zero convoluted jargon busting to wade thru! Par excellence!

I had the same experience myself. Rob knows what he is talking about, is not afraid to share it YET he makes it all very visible, easy to understand. IMHO a real and VERY useful 'workflow' ;-)

I found your mastering tutorial because I just saw it randomly in a sidebar on a related video. And I was a bit skeptical at first, because the title of the video made me think of those guys on here who post like 10 minute mastering pass "tutorials" to brickwall everything and make every mix sound terrible. So I hesitantly clicked the link, and 31 minutes later I felt really stupid. Because it was actually incredibly informative. I've been "mixing and mastering" (lol), my own projects for a little over 10 years and they never quite sound how I want them to. I learned a lot about the basics, just by messing around in my DAW's. But only in the past few years have I really started focusing on getting back to basics. And while I found your mastering tutorial incredibly useful, I found this one even more so. It's like you put into a list the various disciplines and techniques that bounce around my head every time I'm mixing. But when I'm mixing I always forget one or two of them, and the end result is not as tight as it should be. And like a lot of folks, I always used to just throw plugins and compression on everything and call it a day. But in the last few days I've been trying to go with the less is more approach and it's been really eye opening. Well you asked if anyone found this useful. I hope my answer expresses just how useful I found this. Now on to part 2!

Big Thanks Rob. This has really helped my mixing. I like knowing how to think through the process, and the iterative nature of it keeps me moving forward toward a better mix rather than feeling stuck in one place fighting. Big thanks.

Great Video. Would recommend this to anyone going into mix field. Really puts things into a simple and logical perspective. One of the first I have found without a sales pitch attached for some crummy plug-in. Although i must admit...almost thought this was an infomercial because It was well spoken in the beginning and also because the vid was really well done.

Hi Rob, I really liked the part where you talk about adding an EQ that could fit into ALL of the 5 steps. It forces one to think about WHY one would want to add an EQ (or other filter). Such a great example of how you open up the mixing process to make things easy to understand. And yes, lots of ideas spinning in my head right now, but I have a clear vision because of the way how you summarised your process at the end this very useful video. Tnx a lot!

Hey Rob, Just wanted to say I think this is one of the most important things to learn when mixing. For a long time I've worked on this sort of workflow, but it was hard to have some sort of structure to "name" each one of these aspects. I've still got a long way to go, but this video definitely helped me a lot. I often miss a stage/get them in the wrong order. It's so easy to get obsessed making cool effects, only to realise the balance isn't right. Floyd.

this video was also helpful. to me personally, more as an overview. Like, in me I sort of know this already, but you actually cleaned it up in my head and sorted it out, or made boxes for it. it was nice. so thanks. the most interesting part that stuck out for me was the driver: SHAPE. I think there's gonna be some really fascinating moments for me. It felt like YES, in me. HERE'S where the real magic is that will give the song BREATH. Can't wait for you to speak more about it. mmm sweet

My ultimate goal is not just making them sound better but i want to feel the bass, and drums and stil make it so I can hear the high hat and guitars ,keys clear or full, making it wide more so than loud. That's the problem for me, it is very difficult to get it just so. Theres always something wrong with it to me.

very informative as was the 7 step mastering video. Question: this quite successful guy once told me he mixed and mastered his first album on regular computer speakers!! I don't have any proper studio monitoring (yet), am I wasting my time with regular headphones and speakers? I've taken some of my mixes around different places to listen to, and even though it's still on the fly, it's not shockingly bad. What do you think?
