Who are your five most underrated NBA players in the 1980s? Thanks for watching and I just noticed this, but my apology for not looking directly into the camera at some moments. Enjoy the video.
Terry Cummings, Kiki Vandeweghe, Alvin Robertson, Andrew Toney and Xavier McDaniel (Wanted to put Bernard King but is real basketball fans know what’s up).
If Moncrief played in a major media center he'd have been in the Hall of Fame a long time ago. He guarded the 1, 2 and 3 spots. The story is that the DPOY was created for him and he won it the first two years. He helped to make Arkansas basketball relevant. Yeah, I'm a huge fan.
Thanks for the comment. I had no idea that the DPOY was created because of him. Thanks for mentioning that. Moncrief's prime was before my time but after watching classic Bucks games and reading about him, I felt he has been so overlooked. Thanks again for the comment and thanks for watching the video.
I don't think it was the market he played in so much as his style of play. There were not a lot of bells and whistles with him, not a whole lot of windmill dunks or ankle breaking crossovers, just good, solid, fundamentals, winning basketball. People who know the game well can appreciate that, the average casual cannot. And, sadly, the big markets are comprised mostly of casuals.
You are correct, most of these players were on small-mid market teams. That talk about market size annoys me. I hope to do a video about that later on. Once again, great comment. Thank you so much.
@@90sSportsNostalgia I feel like market size in sports DOES matter when it comes to free agency as mid-market teams aren’t able to attract big free agents like many other teams in bigger cities due to location.
@@90sSportsNostalgia now that you mentioned it i could've put Nique a little higher 😄😄😄. But i kinda wanted to give some shine to a few players in the 80s that were scorers that somehow were overlooked.
I think you're the second. As a DePaul fan, I really like Terry Cummings. I think you did a great job to summarize Cummings in a short sentence. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching the video.
Awesome list. Someone else mentioned English, King and Johnson. Perhaps I missed something, but I really enjoy seeing other's peoples lists. Thanks, I enjoyed reading your 5. If I'm not mistaken, I think Barkley said Toney is the best player he ever played with. Toney, Prime King and Johnson were a little before my time.
Bernard King could not be stopped offensively. He was putting up Jordan numbers before his injuries. He is underrated because most of his teams didn’t make it past the first round of playoffs.
Thanks for the comment. I enjoyed reading it. Prime Bernard King was before my time but I enjoy watching his highlights. Thanks again for the comment as I appreciate your opinion on Bernard King.
I really like it. There aren't any right or wrong answers but I like hearing what others think when it comes to underrated. Great names, especially your mention of Norm Nixon. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching the video.
Cliff Levingston could come off the bench for Chicago and turn the tide of a game like none other. Completely amazing. Always gave Chicago a lift whenever needed.
Thank you so much for watching the video. The NBA was much different in the 80s and 90s. The early and mid 80s was before my time as I heard a lot about Jeff Ruland and Rick Mahorn. Years ago, I tried looking on RU-vid for videos about the Washington Bullets during this time, but nothing came up; but maybe I should try again. Your comment made me want to try to find more videos of these two again. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
@@90sSportsNostalgia you have a good thing going with this channel! I think the next wave of popularity will be the 1970’s NBA. It a really interesting period of basketball. Dave Cowens, Paul Westphal, Moses Malone…really underrated players
I really like it. One thing I like about doing this channel, is that I really enjoy reading other peoples' lists, thus seeing what others think. Underrated - is an interesting topic. Thanks for posting your list as I enjoyed reading it.
Cliff Levingston, awesome name to mention. Got a chance to somehow meet him and he was a very nice person. Cliff was awesome. Him, Antoine Carr and Xavier McDaniel at Wichita State would have been fun to watch. But you are awesome for mentioning Cliff Levingston.
I don't know who I could take off your list. If anything this you to expand it. Just so many players.I would added Dale Ellis Chuck Person Alvin Robertson(I know he needs his own episode)
Justin Fraser, thank you so much commenting. Great names you listed. There aren't any right or wrong answers. I like the Chuck Person reference. I am thinking about doing an episode of the top5 Jordan Stoppers (although no one really stopped Jordan) but Alvin Robertson would clearly be on the list.
James Donaldson,James Edwards were really good not stars per se but effective players ;Jeff Ruland (short career due to injuries alas)was a true baller too
Your comment is awesome because those are incredible names you mentioned. You like them big, tough guys. The Jeff Ruland and Rick Mahorn Washington days were before my time, but I heard stories about how tough and physical they were. I would always cheer for Iona in the NCAA Tourney when Jeff Ruland was the head coach there. Thanks again and sorry for the late reply.
People throw the word "underrated" around too loosely These players were not underrated at all in the 80's especially Moncrief and Tripucka. As for the end when people submitted their lists, Bernard King and Alex English and James Worthy are hall of famers underrated they were not.
Thanks for the comment and sorry for the late reply. I understand your point about the word "underrated" because who is truly rating these players. But underrated lists to me are interesting as they are to others. Furthermore, lists will vary greatly because we have our own ideas of whom did not quite get the respect they deserve. But I do understand where you are coming from and perhaps you are correct about the term being thrown around too loosely. Thanks again as I do appreciate your viewership.
Tripuka was a sweet offensive player, but his defense made coaches want to puka. Can't believe someone mentioned Ralph Sampson as "underrated". To me Ralph Sampson is the most overrated player in NBA history. At his size he couldn't shoot over 50%, wasn't an elite shot blocker or rebounder. Had showy moments where you drool at the potential, but never lived up to the extreme hype.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching the video. Kelly Tripuka's defense made coaches want to Puka. I chuckled at that. I did not expect a comment like that. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching the video.
Craig Ehlo was a pretty solid NBA player. I know the name that comes up with Ehlo is Jordan, but Craig had a nice all-around game. Great name to mention, thanks for the comment and thanks for watching the video.
Great name to mention. I really like reading all of these random names people post in the comments. Pierce, perhaps the greatest 6th man ever. Thanks for the comment.
Kiki is an awesome name to mention. I wish I could have experienced watching those Nuggets teams in the '80s. Always enjoy reading the names I get in the comments when I have these underrated lists. My list isn't anything special as I really enjoy reading in the comment section in regards to what players should be mentioned. Thanks for commenting.
Buck was tough. For one of the immaculate grid's for basketball, I had to insert Buck for the Nets and Blazers and I think I put Buck's name for 10 + rebounds. I like that you mentioned Buck. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching the video.
