Are you trying to decide what distance to zero your rifle at? Well, this video will give you the information that you need to help you make the best decision. It will also give you a strategy for sighting in your rifle and how to do it with limited space on a small range.
Like me, you might end up deciding that the 50 yard zero is best, but you only have access to a 25 yard range. Don't worry, I've got you covered! Just head over to my website at johnnytactical.org, go to the Downloads section, and find the 50 yard zero target to get you started.
I also created an exclusive discount code for my RU-vid subscribers so you can get the target for FREE. Just enter the code shown in the video when you check out and the target is on me. That's my way of saying thank you for being a subscriber!

I really enjoyed your video! Just one clarification you may want your viewers to know is because of gravity, your bullet is always dropping because of gravity. The only reason why it is actually rising first is because the barrel is actually pointed up to intersect at the zero you choose with your optic at a certain distance, hence the ark! Great video! Keep them up!

I zeroed my AR15 at 50 yards after watching this then aimed at a 6" steel plate 200 yards away and was hitting it. I was using M855 green tips. I was on target with my M193 FMJ as well. Hint, if you want the M855 & M193 to be consistent, try a 20" chrome lined barrel from TNTE. My green tips always shot higher than my FMJ's with every barrel I used until I installed a TNTE barrel.

Great presentation. I use my 15 primarily as a critter eliminator. Knowing that the 50yd/100yd points of impact are very close is very good information to have. I'm assuming the 50yd/50m difference is negligible. If I set up your target at 25m, the 50/100m points of impact should be relatively the same, correct? I've watched several videos on how to adjust the rear A2 sight drum to sight in at 100m. I'll be employing that information as well.
@johnny_tactical
@johnny_tactical 7 месяцев назад
25 meters = 27.34 yards according to the googles. I would assume the +2.34 yards / + 7.02 feet is negligible as well - close enough for government work, as they say. Let me know how it turns out!
@saxmusicmail

I think the misunderstanding about the 25 yard zero comes from, "Well, the military zeros at 25 yards." Yes and no. They shoot at 25 yards, then adjust Point of Impact to be 1" below Point of aim. It's right on the target they use. I figured out the 50/200 zero for myself over 30 years ago. Some years later after that it became known as the "Santose Zero" as advocated by Col. Santose, can't remember his first name, he and I traded some shortwave receivers, and I found out he was the same Santose. The problem with the 25 yd zero is shooting ~9" high. Who the hell came up with the 36 yd zero and why?

Maybe the guy who only shoots things that are 36 yards away?

The Marine Corps went to Colt Mfg to develope the M4/A4 mid length gas system carbine back in '83. Sight radius being the same for both 14.5 and 16" barrels using A2 sights set at the "Mechanical Zero"(and ignoring the Army 25m "Z"), POI/POA intersect at Exactly 36yds! Super easy. Now you know. Why the Army insists on using a 25m target using the Z and then return to 6/3 for 300m/yds? It's the same thing but with a 25m target on initial zeroing. When you set it back to 6/3, guess what? That's right, your first intersect is at 36yds! Both work perfectly fine😁

@@johnny_tactical36 yard(106 foot) has the tightest holds between 25 and 300 yards of ALL the common zeros...it has the least 'mind-hustling' to deal with. Go over to Vigilance Elites(Shawn Ryans) 36yd battle zero video and you see why it makes the best high stress/low math zero to deal with....from a room clearer out to 300yd it has a small 5.5" POI zone between all those distances. The others are 10"+ ....Using the Eotech reticle the circle encases a 100 yard enemy via height gauge. If a soldier fits inside the circle boot to helmet, threat is ~100 yds away. Eotech + 36yd zero makes holds 'no brainer'

I sighted in my new rifle. Elevation good, but at zero; windage is at extreme left of adjustment on two different rear iron sight purchases. (I checked they were installed correctly). What would cause this?
@johnny_tactical
@johnny_tactical 9 месяцев назад
Check for your dominant eye. If you are a right handed shooter, but left eye dominant it can mess up your sight picture / accuracy especially on a rifle. To check which of your eyes is dominant, try this: 1. With both eyes open, look at an object in the distance, like a clock on the wall across the room. 2. Put both arms straight out in front of you and make a triangle with the thumb and fingers of both hands. 3. With both eyes open center the object you are looking at inside the triangle shaped window you made with your hands. 4. Close one eye, then switch to the other. Whichever eye you can still see the object will be your dominant eye. If it’s the opposite eye from the hand you shoot with, then you’ll have to make some adjustments and have basically two options: 1. Shoot with your non-dominant eye, or 2. Switch hands Let me know how it goes and we can do more trouble-shooting if necessary

Front sight is likely the problem. Bore sight using your eyeball down the barrel after removing the charging handle and bolt. Use any target in your home at a decent distance(7-10yds) and check both the bore and sights without touching the rifle. Let me know what you discover😁
@ryco1865
@ryco1865 7 месяцев назад
It turns out, the rear sight (bolt on carry handle) did not clamp square to rail. I filed down one side til it was centered. I ultimately bought a new rear sight as carry handle was of poor quality anyway.

for a 50 yard zero at 10 yards, aim roughly 1.9 inches above point of impact. Since the bullet is rising at this point it will be zeroed at 50 yards. I would guess a 50 yard zero at 25 yards, you would aim roughly 1 inch above point of impact.

A guy told me, .5” high at 50 yards with a 223/308 will generally be poa out to 250 yards… ever test this?
@johnny_tactical
@johnny_tactical 8 месяцев назад
I have not. 233 and 308 will fly differently, so I don’t see them having the same trajectories. But that’s just off the top of my head. If you can find the space the best way to know is to test the theory. I don’t have a 308 otherwise I’d give it a whirl

@JayGamesAndReacts 8 месяцев назад
Just dosent make sense to me lol
@johnny_tactical
@johnny_tactical 8 месяцев назад
No. I believe it will be about 4-5 inches low. If you have a range available, you could check it by zeroing, then working your way closer 25 yards or so at a time, marking your target, and record the results using the ammo you plan to shoot with. Testing it like that is the best way to know for sure. Anyone else have any suggestions for @michaelthegoat2437 ?

Awesome! Spending time with your dad is a win for both of you. Yeah, this kind of stuff can get very nerdy and there can be a lot of nuance. I try to keep it as simple as I can. If you’re a hunter, 100 yards may be the best zero for your hunting rifle, but if you want versatility, I believe in the 50 yard zero. Thanks for watching and for the conversion, it means a lot
