The 5am Wakening march with the flutes and drums during the 2022 Linlithgow Marches. An ancient tradition that starts with this march through the Burgh, then Linlithgow Bridge and Blackness, rousing inhabitants who join the march, during which they visit the home of the Provost. This is the beginning of a wonderful full day of marches and celebrations.
Linlithgow is one of Scotland’s most ancient Burghs, having received a royal charter from King Robert II in 1389. This gave the town’s authorities the right to hold markets, claim revenue and administer the port of Blackness. A condition was an annual payment to the king - and the need to patrol the town’s properties and boundary every year - the origin of “The Marches".
