Heeey guys, if this is your first contact to LARP and you wanna know more - *here's our video about the LARP basics* 🙂 Have fun exploring this badass hobby: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mWtnql6Epf8.html
WW2 re-enactments are also LARPing, if you ask me. You may have a working Sherman tank or even a Spitfire, but you are still a cosplayer no matter how hard you deny it!
I can classify them as "milsim", although they are technically LARP, their focus is most on the military experience. Berget would be the biggest one i know about.
for post apo optons theres a MAJOR one that happens twice a year in the usa called Revelations at ballahack airsoft field...probably the largest post apo events in the us with easily 1500+ attending each june or december.
If you've played any tabletop role-playing games, you can easily play LARP. The logistics are a bit different, 'cuz some events you have to camp will need to bring food, plan on weather and so on. And combat can be a hell of a lot of fun!
I’m a really huge fan of medieval fantasy but I don’t know anybody who shares my interests. I just turned 18 and I really hope to be able to go to a larp event, I feel like it would be a amazing since I’d be able to get to know people that are as weird as me lol!! & since I live in Germany, I wouldn’t even have to travel so much 🤍🤍 thank you for your informative videos
I'm happy you found this world then =) Yeah, we have so many Larp events here..if you want to find some in Germany, check out "Thilo Wagners Larp Kalender" on Google. And check out "Larper sucht Gruppe. Gruppe sucht Larper" on Facebook. =)
@@Proper_Place it absolutely is! There's assholes in every hobby I guess, but I have seen only a limited amount in Larp because the hobby unites so much (not talking about online debates, just the actual "at the event" feeling =D )
Living in northeast Texas now, in the neighborhood of Dallas-Fort Worth , I've been able to connect with the Dallas chapter of the International Fantasy Game Society which has a core of veterans who go back 25 years and more. Things are back in the swing this year, there are monthly games currently mostly alternating between high fantasy and a sort of steampunk universe. The two dozen or so veteran core personnel go to great lengths to encourage individual development, even new players can get involved in story writing, gear and set production.
Mach weiter so.
Just wanted to say I always love watching your Videos! Hope to see you at Drachenfest US one of these days. If you ever do, please come up and chat with our version of the Silver Avatar ( myself ), would love to say Hi!
one of my favorite types of larps to really take off in the past few years has been "magic" school larps, where you get to play a student at some sort of specialized academy, whether it's for heroes, wizards, or space shaman warriors.
there are tons of Facebook groups like "Larp haven" where you can ask around to find people who are interested in your area just like yourself! Give it a try ❤️
Great video! I'd add multiverse LARP at the end, since they can be a mix of medfan, sci-fi, vampires, horror, pirates, etc... A perfect example is my favourite LARP event Eormengrund in France (100-150 players).
I’m a part of Belegarth Medieval Combat Society in the USA. We’re very focused on the live action combat portion of larping and have a very small amount of role playing. The biggest event i go to is Battle For The Ring in Southern California.
Yep! It’s a medieval boffer larp. But it’s so much closer to a sport because of it’s focus on combat that we call our swords speed bats and our garb look more like sports jerseys than anything.
@@ArykSapien yeah, I agree - when I look at it from an outside perspective I would also have thought it was more a sport than a roleplay thing. Cool to hear that an insider says the same
@@SonjasAdventures it does however matter what parts of Belegarth you are in. There is a selection of folks in Bel who portray monster characters and spend a lot more time roleplaying. And some folks build kits meant to more closely mimic historical time periods too. That said our combat is definitely more sport-like. We've been called the "love child of a rugby match and a renaissance faire."
Your channel made me want to invite you to one or more of our russian larp events: it would be so exciting to hear from you about differences you could see, especially ginven there are lots of different larp styles in Russia itself: from small 15+ people "pavillion" games up to 1000+ grand events involving huge world and ranging from using nerfs and soft protected weapons and up to hard plastic or even metal weaponry.
@@noahtipton7302 there's Ren fest all over the country in America that tends to be a very popular thing. America would be really good if we took some reenactments and turned them into Arps, though a few laps are played almost totally like reenactments it's just sometimes they'll switch who wins, and who loses in America specially for the Civil War there are some Civil War larks in America. I actually remember seeing something about them before I ever heard what was and not strict is a lot, but most people go by their real names you and your friends can start your own LARP just at somebody's house, take turns do food to match the storyline. There's even games you can buy at the store. They're kind of mini lark who done it. Everybody gets there little booklet with things they have to say you can do it where you can use that and just adjust and exaggerate the store you have to put in there for, the information that's needed for the story but me and my friends did murder mystery game at a vineyard at my house we could've acted more we could've dressed up more there's a lot of small ones in America sometimes you don't even realize it's a lot there's so many
@@noahtipton7302 and New Orleans has so many there's a lot of bars that have them every week. If not every day in Maryland it's not big ones it's a lot of little lips bars that do the vampire lark as in theme for the bar.
Just a small correction. The post ap LARP Blodsband Reloaded has around roughly 500-600 participants. Only the smalller "mini larp" versions during Covid are the ones that has been around roughly 200 participants :). Great video!

@@SonjasAdventures Yes ! Started last year, I had done smaller larps when I was younger but now Bicolline is the main one, I will try other genres when I get the chance, there is a post apocalyptic one on a boat in a few months, excited for that one =)
@@SonjasAdventures Yes, near Ottawa, it's like a special game for them on that boat, another year they made one at the Diefenbunker (WW2 Museum) in Ottawa.
Nice video! You could make a whole video just on Airsoft. Which is my hobby. But also like SASS, they dress up as Cowboys and Cowgirls and use real firearms in themed target courses.
I've been a LARP player for over 15 years now, I mostly play Dagorhir, in America. Ragnarok is the yearly event that gathers hundreds of players every year. I very much enjoyed your video, thank you.
I played Vampire: The Masquerade & Werewolf: The Apocalypse LARPs since they started in the mid 90's & it was the most fun I ever had. Pity we didn't have the money for the outstanding set-up the Camarilla LARP of Italy, but we made do: a Goth/Punk bar in our city called Die Maschine (it's gone, now, sadly). I was one of the few who brought props of all kinds to our game, but people's costuming was sweet. I stopped playing in 2008 'cuz I moved to another country & never found a new LARP group, except a fantasy-medieval LARP called Twin Mask.
@@SonjasAdventures West Cost, USA. Oregon and Washington, mostly. I have been playing and running World of Darkness Parlor Larps for most of their venues (Vampire, Werewolf, Wraith, Changeling). I belong to a small local troupe under 50 active players but participated in what is now called the Mind's Eye Society. At its peak, it had thousands of active players all over the world sharing one continuous chronicle.
There are in general many LARPs in Germany, because it is the most populated country of the EU in the most populated region of Europe (Blue Banana) right in the center of Europe and the biggest economy (of Europe and third in the world after US and China) - and Germany is at the same time bordering other important European countries directly and indirectly most of the rest of Europe (which has double the population of the US). Germany is the hotspot of Europe - kind of the base. Its for the same reason the biggest transit-country in Europe (most traffic of all kind, from cars/roads to tracks/trains to internet hubs within or passing through). Plus its part of the most developed countries in the world AND part of the western cultural sphere in which RPGs/Fantasy/LARP as genre came from and/or evolved in the first place. It also has most castles in the world ... And for the same reasons you have the biggest and most most metal/rock concerts in Germany as well as most big Pride and Techno events, most of the 'huge and worldwide relevant' industrial' trade fairs and so on. And almost all other LARP events which were mentioned in the Video are also not far away - Poland, Czech, Northern Italy are directly or almost directly neighbors (and where btw. also back then part of the Holy Roman Empire culture/sphere - which is btw. also with the Frankish Empire before the main reason why the structures in Europe are like they are - and the given reasons are like they are)
There are bars all over America. I know a lot in New Orleans I think there's a couple in New York I think Orpheus in Baltimore might be on certain days like this some are all the time some are just on certain weekends doping for the evening they'll have music and do like especially the vampire themeLAR where everybody is a vampire maybe even in places you don't even realize
As a big fan of warhammer setting I have to recommend you to check Zweihander game in Poland. They create a relly beautiful fantasy world and take costume clearance and character fit very seriously. Much bigger and better Warhammer Larp game is taken place in Russia. It is a biggest and most visually beatuful game in warhammer setting with a lot of monster characters which are rare in Poland games.
Heeey, yes I have seen pictures of Zweihander Larp in Poland and it's incredible!! And also of the Warhammer Larp in Russia - simply incredible what these guys have built! Great recommendations
@@Proper_Place yeah the next few years I will probably focus on other things than larp events and just go to 2-3 local ones with my friends. But I really appreciate the kind invitation
Sonja did you disqualify the SCA because its a medieval recreation group? I ask because its larger then the other medieval recreation events you listed with 11000 or more people at each event. its around the same time as bicolline.
Hey there, I didnt mention it because members of SCA tell me that they specifically dont want to be called LARP and consider themselves a different hobby (although Im not sure Id personally fully agree =D )
@@SonjasAdventures haha yeah the SCA people think its not a Larp but it definately is,goin by the exact definition of Larp and not their biased opinions. I participated in the SCA for over 25years and I know it is in fact a LKARP haha.
I and my group have been running a post apocaliptic LARP event inspired by METRO series. And I'm also a reenactor. You might have an idea how much I need to participate in Legion LARP now :D
uuuuh - Legion sounds like such a cool event. Very demanding but that's what I personally love about the idea the most. Gets you out of your comfort zone
Hey there just wanted to put in the comments that with the help of a few others are creating a Midevil fantasy Larp in Toronto Ontario Canada, it will be a single day play test, for free to those interested in showing up to play. For anyone interested in details on participating please feel free to drop a request by replying to this post and I'll get back to you as fast as possible.
You are such a fair excited adventurer. The Society for Creative Anachronism must either be slightly out of what you enjoy. Or you see it as too historical. But it it just a place where generally nice is cool. Please take some time to look at the SCA. It’s a medieval LARP but based more fighting and period arts. I promise it fun well established and safe for children.
Hey there, I havent mentioned SCA as it doesnt consider itself to be the same hobby =) It considers itself to not be LARP, so I havent mentioned it at all (much like reenactment or Cosplay, who are similar hobbies but different at the same time)
It's not quite the same as LARP, though, as there's no experience points & no quests or storyline for players to follow. It's more of an historical reenactment event.
Hello to everyone! LARP is amazing thing to do! I've played for more than 10years and I loved every second of that time I've played. LARP is a way to be yourself in this crazy world. You can be something different from human. You can be orc, elf, demon, devil, dworf, dragon and many more creatures. Hope you can find LARP comunity in your country!
I'd like to do larping but the thing is, I'm a little different and I want to play in medieval times but as a modern soldier that got (depends on what I truly feel like) sent back in time or sent through a worm hole like Stargate to realms that haven't really made it past medieval times. Which I'm pretty sure everyone who does their own larp event won't let that happen which is sad really but ah well
It is interesting how the fantasy genre seemed to be focused on fighting only. In my country the fighting part has separated into it's own sport (largest event is the yearly organized Sotahuuto - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d5KY19FjGQM.html) where there is no characters involved, but instead the fighting is a team sport like any regular sport would be. Therefore in regular fantasy larps there is few or even none fighting involved, instead there is intrigue, mystery, and most of all, character interactions. Also interesting that I have participated in all 6 categories of larp, since I primarily am mostly fantasy larper. Of course I have been in none of the bigger ones you mentioned, but smaller productions back here.
Hey there, you are from Finland then, correct? =) Actually, no Medieval Fantasy Larps are not focused on fighting only. They just often INCLUDE fighting. And depending on your role you could have nothing to do with any fights =) Of course there are also mainly diplomatic larp events, taverns etc...I just showed the 3 biggest in the world which happen to include fighting. Sorry for the confusion =)
@@SonjasAdventures You are correct, I am from Finland. Nordic larp is the main form (if not the only form) of larping around here. That's why I asked about the possible differences.
@@Tyrisalthan aaah yeah I see - we do have tons of Nordic Larping here in Germany as well. It's a way of larping that has become more and more popular for sure I think we have more in common than you think. I guess the biggest difference is between Europe and the US
@@SonjasAdventures Yes, there is probably the largest difference between european and american larp cultures. Although I am not sure what kind of cultures other continents might have. I have heard of games in middle east, but that is so close to europe that the influence is obvious.
@@Tyrisalthan hmmm the only games in the middle east that I know of are in Israel. They are definitely influenced by Europe because a couple of Israeli Larpers visit Larp events like Drachenfest in Germany. But they are still in the earlier stages, I would say - meaning, the Larp events aren't huge yet. The spaceship you see in this video is one from Israel actually. It has been made by "Larp Gladiator"
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately this LARP looks very repetitive. What do you do except for fighting Aliens? Is there any variety at all? Is there any progression?
Hi there, are you maybe referring to a different video? This ia a video about the 6 biggest Larp genres with plenty of different events, are you maybe referring to my other video about P.R.I.M? If so, the answer is: - There's some main plot if you are interested (finding out more about the aliens, seeing if there's still other humans alive, political plot wihtin the last resistance etc) - you can interact with other groups and do all kinds of roleplay (trading for ressources, forming bonds etc) - and of course you can come as all kinds of roles including ones that dont fight at all Hope that helped =)
Of course there's progression! Each game, you get experience to build up your character, so you can end up pretty "powerful", as far as the game is concerned. You can learn new spells (medieval fantasy) or abilities to add to your character, but you'll need to roleplay learning them. A good GM (or group of GMs--most LARPs have a group that runs the game story) will come up with good stories, quests to go after, & other tasks. All LARPs have a main storyline & side stories you can follow & participate in.
Can i be a wuxia hero or a ronin in LARP event too? I always wanted to be a wandering swordsman like miyamoto musashi or yan guo from the return of the condor heroes.
yeees, it's from you ❤ We credited you in the right upper corner - it was so awesome to see your take on BBR! If you want me to also credit you in the description, just tell me of course
@@SonjasAdventures I don't know about Germany or other parts of the world. In the tidewater region of Virginia, every single twenty-something you'll meet at an airsoft field will try to tell you they're U.S. Navy SEALs. And I promise you that 99.9 percent of them are just pretending. 😅
@@ericfleming5522 haha okay fair enough - I don't know about that. But from what I have seen in the German Airsoft community, they mostly don't do any roleplay - however, they sometimes have MilSims which definitely come closer to the point =)
Even the reconstruction can be called LARP, they simply restore to the smallest detail a book on the history of this world, and in another game they restore costumes and life to the smallest detail, for example, the book The Lord of the Rings. And since all participants in both actions do not repeat step by step the actions of a particular character, but allow frivolity, let's say in dialogues, this is already a role-playing game just on different topics. And yes, people involved in imitation and acting out something based on real history really do not like when they are called role players)))))
It's a very different hobby - to me personally it doesnt fulfill what I look for. I really care about the roleplaying part and about being immersed. Since the crafting part of the hobby is the one I hate the most (yeeeah, I'd rather have someone help me with that haha) and since I'm not really a fan of any series/comic/videogame character that I want to recreate, the hobby doesn't make much sense to me personally. But that's just my very personal take on it. I am sure it's an awesome hobby for a lot of people who like the mentioned parts above =)
The largest larp category on earth is milsim. Everything from Airsoft to actual military training is larp by every definition, except people just don't call it larp.
Especailly Milsim people themselves don't call it Larp =D Having been part of a Milsim myself I should add that most of them don't really roleplay that much. I have been to Larp-focussed Milsims but most Airsoft events that I know are more about strategy while people stay "out-game" and not "in character"
If you're in North America, there're TONS of LARPS of all kinds in the US & Canada. The Star Wars clip was from a LARP in Washington state. I've played in a LARP nearby called Twin Mask, & they meet at a permanent Ren-faire site in Corona, California. I also played for over 13 years in Vampire: The Masquerade & Werewolf: The Apocalypse LARPs in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Just Google, "LARPS near (insert city)".
Hey there, depends on the country! I hear there are some interesting examples in the Czech Republic - and we have some small versions in Germany. To be honest, I have never been though, so I can't personally recommend anything
well, there's only two options you have when it comes to fear: You either let it overcome you and rule your life...or you decide to tackle it and try even though you are afraid =) Bravery isn't the absence of fear...it's doing things even though you are afraid =) Just think about "what's the worst thing that could happen?", then find a solution for when it would actually happen..
@@SonjasAdventures I'm mostly scared to mess up and ruining the magic for everyone else. How do larpers handle situations like that? Just stay in character like it never happened or just laugh it off and continue?
@@Noise-fe6dp I have never actually seen a situation where someone "messed up" because it's hard to do 😊 Basically there's no "correct way" of playing pretend. It's a big game of improvisational theatre so if you say anything, I will just take it seriously and run off of that, improvising my response. Have you ever done pen&paper games like "Dungeons and Dragons"? That's an amazing exercise to feel more comfortable role-playing at Larps 😊 So long story short: You will not ruin it for anyone ❤️ The community will help you up front and dueing the game and will probably make you feel at ease. And you can always begin by mainly observing and checking out how others do it! ❤️
I am i first time person getting into larp, i always wanted to get into it and watched many videos. Closest thing i did would be entertainment wrestling on the indie scene and backyard. But im at kingston NY , US. Anybody know of a larp group in that area i would love to check it out.
Hey there, have you tried searching for Larp + your area on google or facebook? I would also look for Larp events on larping.org - in the US, Boffer Larp is still one of the biggest types of Larp - so you will probably find an "Amtgard" near you if you google it. Also here's a list I found for Larps in the US (which is probably not complete at all): larpwiki.labcats.org/index.php?title=List_of_larps_in_the_USA
Great sampling of fantastic LARP games! I took the video of the lightsaber combat in the Star Wars LARP "The Galaxy Awaits!" In that game Nerf blasters, light up foam boffers, and spell packets are used. Check out some videos here for in-game combat scenarios: youtube.com/@galaxyawaitslarp3253
oh cool, thank you for taking that video! Spell packets are still a little weird to me I have to admit. for some reaons that throws me out of my immersion - but I know that's bigger in other countries. Glad you guys have Star Wars Larp 😍👍
It's such a treat to be in a sci-fi game where filming can be done in-game. (I even play a twi'lek reporter) Funny, spell packets are just the way of things in our little corner of the world :P

@@SonjasAdventures Thanks for the reply. I am with the sporty Amtgard and quest focused International Fantasy Gaming Society, some others in years past.
This is more like the European version. There are LARPs that rival the size and scope of these events in the United States, but there weren't any mentions of any of ours. For instance Pennsic is the world's largest full contact medieval war. It's every year around August and around 600 people attend. It's so large they have to set up a temporary post office.
Hey there, sorry but SCA doesnt consider themselves to be Larp - and Pennsic has around 16,000 attendees (not 600) as far as I know. However, it doesnt consider itself to be the same hobby.. so I havent mentioned it for that exact reason. Same as I didnt mention reenactment or cosplay or any other "similar hobbies" 😊 We have mentioned the second biggest larp event in the world, which is in Camada. So we really tried to take an international look at this 👍
10K to 16K is the attendance at Pennsic, not a piddly 600. It's SCA-based, & they'd get pretty pissy if you called their reenactment war a LARP. They're picky about authenticity of costuming to match the time-periods you're portraying. I do think of it as a kind of LARP, but it's not really a full-on LARP 'cuz there's no specific quests or tasks for people to do, & there's no experience points or storyline to follow.
