In the snowy mountains of 1960s America, hippie culture was hitting the slopes. Thrill-seeking skiers quit toeing the line and began carving out new, radical ways of making it down the mountain in style. They established an ever-growing community of athletes, living for the creative freedom and limitless fun of hot dog skiing. This look back on the origins and development of the now Olympic discipline reveals its carefree, no-rules beginnings, and the showmen who took this dangerous sport to the big time.

The day skiing became much less exciting for me was the day I learned to ski breakable crust and make it look like powder, but oh what a day that was!

An important step was the "GELANDESPRUNG" jumping off the old mine dump at Alta. Around 1965.

Just understand, those skis, those bindings, those ski boots and still doing all these freestyle tricks...

right! The skis were straight as rulers and long as in some cases 215cm, boots were low ankle grazing leather, bindings were bear claws!

There are fundamentals to skiing; that if ignored, you will have difficulty skiing in different conditions and different slopes. Freestyle is great, but you cannot initiate turns from the tails of your skis and progress, but some people did, and their technique is flawed and suffers tremendously. But, equipment evolves and allows for refining technique, and it can allow for devolving technique.

The "fundamentals" are laid down by Mother Nature and the human body and the equipment at hand. If you're young and flexible and strong, balanced and coordinated, brave and imaginative, you can figure out pretty quick what works and what doesn't - and how far you can go before Mother Nature/ your body/ your equipment says "NO". You can teach yourself. I did. On 190 cm downhill racing skis. And can easily ski any conditions and slopes and win races. Whatever works. The "fundamentals" are not set by man-made rules; the "fundamentals" are set by whatever works best in various conditions for various purposes - slalom racing, downhill racing, hot dogging, grace in powder or just having fun. But, yeah, I can see that some people would benefit from a teacher if they can't or don't have the time to figure it out for themselves. Techniques are evolving all the time. Boundaries are being expanded. That's the greatest pleasure. That is the whole point of this video. There is nothing "flawed" or "suffering" or "devolved" about it. Cheers! And don't forget - once you've mastered the basics - to let loose and explore!

Haha, yes and what that "free" is? Who is fastest in bumb-ride? Who makes same x amount roll in jump better? 9.7. Radical! ;-) Slopestyle? All have same kanoes as skis, all make same piruettes, all even have same ass-first stance and same baggy trousers on! Aint that free! So free that all look just the same.
