Well, despite how well we've maintained this truck, the absolutely terrible JMBX torque converter design has reared its ugly head, and we were forced to get a rebuild at just 113k miles.
I'll add more details to the description tomorrow, but needless to say, I am NOT a happy customer right now.
Here is the article by Sonnax that I was referencing in the video:

Guess I'm lucky... Got a 98 GMC slt Sierra, 4l60 with 240k miles. Second owner, easy miles. I baby it, still shifts fine...I suck the fluid out & replace it twice a year.

Yes sir, got an 07 Tahoe myself with 200k on the 4L60, no issues. Simpler was better!

Hello from Ontario, Canada. I have a 2017 Tahoe Z71 with only 62,000 miles...100,000 km here, eh? No issues to date but I had the transmission flushed a year ago and the truck happens to be going in for oil change and winter tires swapped for summers next week. Independent shop with a long carrier at GM dealership....so, we will talk about torque converters. Thank you!

Definitely can't hurt to check on it! During the first two transmission services I did, the fluid in the trans pan was nowhere near as dark as what was shown in the video. Once the converter clutch starts to go...they go really fast. Sonnax makes a billet converter retrofit kit that uses your stock converter but replaces the poorly designed parts with much stronger ones, so that's definitely a worthwhile upgrade if yours is still in good shape and you don't want to spend the money on a full converter. Thanks for watching!

Ain't that the truth...I'd even take another 4L60 at this point, the one in my Tahoe has 200k on it and hasn't missed a beat. Better yet, they should just stop worrying so much about the EPA and just make reliable products...wouldn't that be great! lol

@@AllThingsMechThey could have the EPA standards and still have reliable products, I think they get too high tech
@AllThingsMech
@AllThingsMech 6 месяцев назад
Definitely agreed. Biggest things seem to be 1) trying to shoehorn too much tech into a too-small package, and 2) trying to push the envelope to see how cheaply they can produce something and still make it reliable. Both seem to be happening here, but it's usually #2 that causes the biggest problems.

@@AllThingsMechYep, I guess for the most part we are better off if you consider the power we get with the high MPG now, Brings back memories of adjusting points and replacing spark plugs @ 10,000 tires @ 20,000, oil @ 3,000, valve job @ 30,000!

No, it doesn't. Deep first and tall sixth make for a better truck than the old 2.52 or 2.48 first and no OD.

After years of only buying Toyota because my dad got burned one too many times, we bought a vehicle with this transmission lol Hopefully it doesn't go out any time soon.

why suck the fluid out just drop the pan replace the filter . that not solving a issues that's putting salt in a wound . ever trans is serviceable even when they say not serviceable . it is just them wanting to make more money . some trans yes you gotta take them out the service while others your don't .

I sucked some of the fluid up just to see what it looked like before taking the time to drop the pan, that's all. Wishful thinking I guess, but I'm a fan of taking the least invasive approach to a repair. Once I saw the color of the fluid, the pan came off the very next morning. You also have to remember that this was before I had done all of the research and realized how widespread of an issue this is.

6l80 is a garbage transmission plain and simple. GM has made this transmission for 15 years and still hasn’t figured out how to make it shift worth a damn. I have a 2021 Silverado custom with this transmission with only 35k miles on it and it’s the sloppiest shifting transmission I’ve ever felt. Literally clunks into gear sometimes when downshifting. Total piece of shit. It shifts like what you expect from an old worn out transmission with 250k plus miles. It’s junk!

Very good video. The torque converter is what explodes. The PR valve you mentioned in your repair list is what triggers the torque torque converter to puke. If caught in time not only should the torque converter be changed but the PR valve should be changed also

You need the lock out the cooler bypass so it is always cooling and not stuck bypassing

A 680 at 11300 me, either somebody was driving it really really hard, or at what more likely, it was never in Speck in its band adjustments and clutch adjustments in the first place. I have never even heard of a torque converter so thin that it flexes enough to make contact with the interior clutches.. and I've been reaching on cars since 1964

With all due respect to your many years of experience, I encourage you to do some research on the 6L80E and educate yourself a bit on the JMBX converters used in these vehicles - starting with the article from Sonnax that I've conveniently linked for you in the description of the video. This is not a new issue, and is well documented. 1) No, this truck isn't driven hard; its my wife's daily. 2) The bands and clutches in the transmission were not out of adjustment, and have nothing to do with the failure here; it's isolated to the TCC within the converter, which comes apart and sends shrapnel through the entire trans. Please watch the video in it's entirety, and then go do some digging of your own on the issue and see what you come up with. If you can come up with a different cause of the failure (other than what you've already suggested, which was not the case), I'd love to hear it...but keep in mind that I've already gotten the issue fixed and have spoken at length with the shop about what failed. What I stated in the video regarding my trans is not conjecture or opinion.
