Around twenty years ago, I was lucky to have a great teacher at school who once showed us his lucky charm -- a Hotei figurine. He told us that he'd got it as a present. He'd been told to rub Hotei's belly to improve his financial circumstances. Sadly, it didn't reflect on his salary (either the rubbing needed to be more thorough, as he claimed, or one should be a true Buddhist for it to work properly, and he was brought up in the USSR -- not the most Buddhist-friendly society in history).
@Linfamy

Fun fact! Daikokuten, Hotei and Ebisu are all the same deity, Miroku Bosatsu, or the Future Buddha. Daikokuten is also Shiva. Jurojin and Fukurokuju are the same deity and Bishamonten was initially Idaten (another buddhist deity that had relations to Kannon Bosatsu when she was incarnated in Guan Yin in China), due to the fact that Bishamonten was already in a group. Also, Kisshoten (Lakshimi, goddess of beauty in India) was originally in this group as well and possibly had a rivalry with Benzaiten.

Daikokuten can actually be traced back to lord Mahakala the fierce form of Shiva master of time and wisdom and Bishamonten can actually be traced back to Kubera the master of wealth so we can say that these two Hindu gods might have changed roles in the Japanese canon, Benzaiten however can be traced back to sarasvati who plays a string instrument much like Benzaiten however although most of her Japanese attributes fit the Hindu one in Hinduism she is often shown with swans and peacocks and not snakes and dragons, however another esoteric Hindu goddess matangi might be a bit closer to Benzaiten.
@andrewollmann304
@andrewollmann304 4 года назад
I thought that looked like Mahakala. Interesting thing about Mahakala is that first he was considered to be a fierce aspect of Shiva, but then Buddhism co-opted him to be a dharmapala (fierce protector of the Dharma) Benzaiten is probably Sarasvati because they’re both associated with wisdom and the arts. Also, a stupa is a reliquary mound. Buddhist teachings might be inside, but usually, they’re for objects that belonged to, or body parts of, varrious buddhas It’s usually seen as a sign of devotion for people to complete a number of walks around a stupa. Also, there is a series called “Hometown Rebuilding: Folktales from Japan” that I’ve recently started watching. One legend tells how Benzaiten became the Goddess of the Bathroom. Basically, the Seven Lucky Gods held a meeting to decide which areas of the house to protect, but Benzaiten was late...and when she got there, the only spot left was the bathroon.

What's with love goddesses having feathered cloaks? Nordic Freya has one and Sumerian goddess Inanna (Akkadian Ishtar) is often depicted having wings on her back, which is uncommon for Mesopotamian deities of 3rd and 2nd millennium BCE.

@@JustSpectre you know good sir that's a great observation. It is simply fascinating now that you point it out. As a student of religion and mythology I personally don't think much anthropological and mythological research has been done in that field , however can't deny that such observations point out a common ancestor for all Indo-European religions in fact I would ask you to also think about how every religion in Asia and Europe has references to a thunder God fighting a dragon.
@JustSpectre
@JustSpectre 3 года назад
@@shivamthapa7303 That's right and as everything else it begins in Sumer where god Ninurta fights demon or maybe dragon Asag. Though Ninurta was not thunder god but fertility god and some researchers even see some common themes between his story and story of saint Georgios. Georgios means a farmer in Greek. Then there is famous fight between Marduk (again, not thunder god per se) and Tiamat which resulted in creation of the world. Similar myths appear also in Cannan. But the most important point is that these cultures are not Indo-European, but Semitic or unknown group in case of Sumerians. Good luck with your studies.

@@Linfamy Back in the 1800s there was a transfer of Chinese train railroad builders from United States during the Cuban Independence War , aka Spanish American War. These rail road workers brought with them their culture, naturally. Even some took up arms to fight for the Cubans, and some suggested that they fought along side with Jose Marti, which is highly possible, since many Chinese migrant workers, along with blacks and Mexicans, took to hiding in the Oriente or mountains of the island, such as Santiago and Guantanamo (ironically enough after the liberation of Cuba in 1901, 60 years later these would be where the Cuban Communist Revolution would start as well). I don't know if there were still an Asian population by then fighting along side Castro and Che Guevara. Fascinating how History connects everyone together in one form or another.

My favorite game on the PS Vita is Muramasa Rebirth. They added a DLC pack called Genroku Legends. It was 4 chapters and each chapter you played as a different protagonist that represented different japanese folktales and yokai. Okoi, a vicious Nekomata out for the blood of those that wronged her family. Gonbe, a humble farmer and his story of rebellion against the shogunate. Arashimaru, a cursed shinobi that seeks redemption. Rajyaki, the youngest daughter of Lord Enma of the underworld and her earthly exploits. The theme tying the episodes together is the 7 lucky gods. The gods have displaced their magical items and they appear in each chapter of the DLC. My wish is that Muramasa Rebirth and Genroku Legends get a port to the PS4 or PC so more people can play this awesome action game and it would be a site to see it running in 4K.

I think Bishamonten was the first one that I heard about the 7 Lucky Gods due Samurai Warriors since Uesugi Kenshin was a worshiper of Bishamonten if I recall correctly. I also find bit strange on how only Bishamonten went to Japan's myth but not his brothers/partners in his original group. Which I only learn about it thanks to Shin Megami Tensei ;P

In The Movie, Pom Poko, you are probably familiar with the yokai parade scene (Hyaki Yagyo). During this scene you will see 7 golden people on top of a building and tossing out gold to the people below. If you pause the movie at this part, they are the 7 lucky gods! Also, I was wondering, in this same scene, who was the big man who was bowing on top of the buildings and then turned into a cat? Is it Bakeneko?
