I love vaporwave and nostalgia and I love that you played this game! I do acknowledge the fact that a lot of it is a mashup/recreation of what 80's/90's was like, so I don't correct you on it.
***** I'm surprised you didn't try to read out any of the Japanese. Here is all the words I could find: 0:09 おもちゃ (Omocha) is Japanese for "Toys." 3:36 Quiero is Spanish for "I want." 6:01 うんてんする (Unten suru) is Japanese for "to drive." 6:07 ショップ (Shoppu) is the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "shop." 9:54 Vrai (Which is actually pronounced "vrey") is French for "true" or "real". Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention that all the characters look like they're straight from Earthbound.
What were the 90's like? I was born in 1999, but people I've met who've grown up then act like it was the best time of their lives, and how everything now basically sucks.
Long Hoang they were amazing and yes there are good things nowadays but the big difference is that no one knew the magic formula to rake in bucks and get good ratings in regards to entertainment, now they do, so stuff is very repetitive/bland compared to back then IMO
Long Hoang i was born in '95 and tbh most of it seems like rose tinted nostalgia glasses... but i wasn't there so i can't really say obviously... my childhood was fucking weird though. we didn't have internet 'till like 2004 or something and prior to that the only gameconsoles we had were NES, SNES, PS1, Dreamcast, and PS2. (my big brother also had N64 but he never let me use it...lol.) i get that not having internet by 2004 might be weird but... let's just say the place where i grew up in was a bit behind the times........literally living next to friggin farmfields over here holy shit.
Aokuma I don't know what I'd do without internet, it's like my lifeline, but I mean a childhood where you have access to so many consoles is really amazing. Nowadays, PC emulators can play your favorite games pretty easily, but to be able to play those games on the consoles themselves, I'd honestly pay for an experience like that.
***** I can see how shows nowadays are getting old and repetitive. I mean, I've watched reruns of cartoons like Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life, and they just go all out, and as a kid, you could enjoy the show, without actually understanding what the characters truly say and do, but for the young adults and older audiences, you can understand the jokes and actually enjoy the show, because it's actually funny or in Adventure Time's case, it actually has a deep story. IMO, in today's cartoons, and even some of today's TV shows in general (save for a few like the aforementioned Adventure Time, as well as Regular Show to an extent, and The Amazing World of Gumball), you rarely see any depth in them, for a lack of a better term. Like the humor is incredibly bad or uncomplex, there's no real story-line or personality in the characters, and overall, almost lifeless at times.
This is supposed to b in the 90's, but based off those pastels, I'd say they went back a little too far. They did their research for the toys though...
Matthew DeVoll to be fair, i don't really view this as vaporwave because i literally lived this entire game out IRL when this stuff actually existed and was popular in the 80's and 90's (born in 85). most of the toys and games here I actually played/watched/read/listened to etc. as a kid, so it doesn't really come off as "vaporwave" to me, it comes off as actual history haha
***** understandable! i realize that most of the elements of this game are genuine pieces of culture from that era, i'm just saying that i'm pretty sure that the creator of this game was inspired by vaporwave's /repurposing/ of these relics into a new style (i could go into vaporwave's 'aesthetic' but i would be digressing highly), and created the game with the intent of mimicking that style. i definitely understand that you and most people your age actually lived and thrived in the primary era of these products and that this gives you a different lens to view something like this through. the maker of this game may have intended for it to fit the on the vaporwave shelf (which would explain the other not-really-90s-related elements, like the roman statues, japanese kana characters, etc), but of course not everyone who consumes the media sees it the same way, and it's up to you to decide what it means to you ! wow this was probably way more in depth than it needed to be
Matthew DeVoll :P no problem, i understand yer viewpoint! also; what i'll find interesting is in about 20 years when people are looking at justin bieber and playstation 3 and duck dynasty as "retro classics" lmao
Andrew the Android everything in here is from the 90's sooo i generally go by the original titling/purposing of something, like in 50 years this stuff will be seen as "classical" or "oldies", but it was originally to me, "90's stuff" haha
yo dez wasn't floam like the most useless trash once you got it? like i ordered that as a kid, it looked sooo cool on the commercial, but when i got it it was just $40 worth of useless foam putty like wtf
