People who weren't even alive in the 90's and never watched the games live on TV...are now running a campaign to downgrade the era. The audacity is outlandish. 😂

Everyone's watching full 90s games and laughing at how hilariously bad the offense and defense actually was. They now realize they have been lied to. It is what it is. You can either rewatch them honestly, or continue to delude yourself. My first finals was 91 Lakers vs Bulls. At first I believed the media and my nostalgia. At some point I rewatched the 91 finals and realised they were lying.

@@bierdlll LOL, stop being a clown. If you were to round tothe nearest number percentage of people who never watched 90s bball and are now watching full 90s games today you would get ZERO %. You are talking about tik tokers click baiting children into watching their videos by claiming they are have been watching stuff. I am not going to say whether we believe you or not about what you watched, but if you say you watched 90s games and account for the rules: (just the tight travelling and more importantly CARRYING calls), and the amount of allowed contact and the somehow suggest that it was easier to score then, there has to be something wrong with you.

I think most people are having 2 different arguments. If we're talking evolution of the skills, then obviously the most current has the advantage of past skillsets to build upon. However, the NBA is a professional sport and that means FANS have to ENJOY it. If they're not, then that would equate to the product being worse. The 90s was the height of the game's popularity. That matters a lot.

that "evolution of the skills" can be summerized as : just shooting better, because today's handling and dribble moves would be absolutely whistled as travel, carry and double dribbling in the 80's or 90's. And what about the involution of other basketball skills like post moves ? Shouldn't this count as well ?
@kkbaby30
@kkbaby30 Месяц назад
@@theghostofbabanovac7069 I think the main improvement is probably over time, the crop of players being drafted have been shooting 3s since they were children and even taller players are learning ball handling like a guard only used to have. Holmgren and Wemby are great examples of this. But yes, I agree that a lot of the game has devolved thanks to a relaxation of rules (the carries are insane now) and the allowance of extra steps and moving screens makes me mental, lol!

Then a ton of HOF talent emerged! MJ dominated as well. These all stars packed their home field. Their house was packed for the excitement. Nowadays, it's nothing like it used to be. I think superteam forming exised in every era to a certain extent but Lebron brought it to climax with 2 prevaling top 10 players concurrently (and then repeatedly) at the most very prime age. What made him being abhorred by even nowadays nba young fans were that he developed floping, travelling, blaming and standstill eyesight defence with stat padding by keeping the ball and pretending to be assisting the team. Ugly truth is that all his good teammates stat went down after teaming up with him. Westbrook just exposed him because two genuine statpadder could not survive or thrive in one single team concurrently to share limited stats. They were just two stat padders.

What you mentioned in terms of variance of style is why i miss the 90s. Each team had it's all star or superstar leader and the play style was different among all the different stars and the team style followed suit. I loved 3 point "heavy" players or teams back then because only the best shot that many and i loved fast paced run n gun teams because it clashed so differently with the slow it down teams. Now everyone plays the same from players to team systems. Yes there were downsides. Coaches wanting to force it in the post to someone who probably shouldn't be getting possessions going through them or in general forcing talented guys to play only back to the basket. Yes, there were lots of big stiffs there as bodies to throw at the HOF bigs-but many to throw at Shaq. Put Shaq in todays league and the number of big stiffs would drastically go up too-i guarantee it. Yes, there were more specialists roles(and yes you could argue many of the bigs and the specialists couldn't make a team today-fine, but getting rid of them is one of the reasons why differing team styles is all but extinct now). So yes, i would love to see a bit more freedom for the forwards and centers to be able to face up, handle a bit more and stretch the floor a bit more. Yes, the point guards look small outside of some outliers compared to many today, but that's only because most today are just shooting guards and there's no real point guard anymore in the traditional sense back then. I do like a bit of the positionless set up-but not for every team. I do like 3 pt teams, but not for every team. I do like small ball teams, but not for every team. I do like run n gun, and i do like grind it out teams. JUST NOT EVERY fkn team. Each different style should have a counter or clash of matchups. The "soft" jump shooting team vs the bully slow it down, grind it out team. The small ball explosive team vs the slower, but bigger and stronger team. If i had a perfect league, it would be 60% 90s, 20% 2ks, 12% 2010s, 5% 80s. 3% 2020s
@HailKingCeezer

IMO the traditional point guard “general” and coach on the floor who set the tempo and the traditional power forward from back then get the most hate. They see those 90s pgs and they repeat trash like Arenas who says he and pgs today would destroy them, completely ignoring that Arenas and all these “pgs” would be a shooting guards in the 90s because in a traditional position- it’s what they are and having the ball in their hands more just leads to more assists- but doesn’t make them traditional point guards. The tradition power forward is basically a center today. They get clowned on as unskilled and unathletic guys who couldn’t play so all they did was bully and hurt other players. “Issa complete crap!” Almost every traditional power forward back then had a money spot up mid range shot and more advanced post play and would eat up todays Fs- many of whom are basically traditional small forwards in style( no I ain’t hating only- todays forwards would feast from the perimeter against *most of the traditional power forwards if they’re not allowed to play physically aggressive. Anyway my point is those traditional PFs would just train to stretch the floor from a spot they’d be efficient at and they’d turn them into a boring stat player just the same. Hell, we saw Marc Gasol and Serg Ibaka go from shooting no threes to almost exclusively shooting 3s in just a summer of training. Why do you think Luc Longley or Charles Oakley wouldn’t be spotting up from 3 today? May take them a few summers to really get efficient- but they’d get there. I would just worry all the shooting and handles techniques/training of today would continue to lead to everyone playing the same and looking the same in style and play aesthetic. So just let big Oak knock down mfers who dare to attack the rim and hit the occasional mid range post up.

centers were stifled into playing back to the basket and Olajuwon himself mentioned that he didn't want to be a traditional kind of center which is why he was so much more skilled than any other center in the 90s . That's why he was so much better because he was smart and figured out the limitations of just wanting to stay in the paint despite him being great at it . why did Olajuwon feel that it was so easy for him to dominate then? I do not watch basketball, so I have to ask: -- more skilled today? Does that mean launching more 3's? That is a skill some may have, but I would not call it majority. -- more athletic? How is that shown? 3 pointers are skill, so super athlete not needed. -- dribbling is a skill There is so much traveling and carrying, so dribbling is limited. Dribbling well rarely exists today. -- load management This allegedly more athleticism requires more rest? In the day and age of knowledge, load management requirements should be less. Diet, exercise, sleep are big factors in health and fitness. I will not even put skates on the players, but inquire how many players today can run the court back and forth five times without requiring a serious rest? No cardio workout? Look at my bug muscles, but they solely work standing still and with much rest. -- Why are there so many air balks today? Are there depth perception issues with the players? Even still there should be some kind of memory on distance and location of the rim. Likely more, but cannot remember. Whatever the sport, whatever the day, athletes adapt themselves according...for the majority. It is beyond difficult to compare one person to another. The average player is much more skilled than the average player from 3 decades ago, it's just the game evolving. Superstars would do well in todays league, just like superstars today would do well in the league 3 decades ago. (Given time to adapt of course) The Average player today would probably be more athletic than the average player 30 years ago, better technology, better understanding on how to improve athleticism, more people scouted to become professionals, etc. Dribbling requires more skill than dribbling 30 years ago (Just like 90's players were better at dribbling than 60's/70's players) People broke rules ALL the time in the 90s, traveling and carrying just became one of those rules you could get away with breaking. The average NBA player is a better Athlete than 30 years ago, but people who understand how the human body works (Professionals, not people who watch the NBA at home on their couch) know that it is NOT a good idea to play 40 minutes a game 82+ games a season, unless you want to be injured frequently. It just puts way too much stress on the body. We knew much less about the stress the body went through in an NBA game 40 years ago, and load management makes it so you're not having your teams star player on a 50m/year contract injured every other year. Conditioning in todays NBA is wild, just look at Curry, that guy can run around the court for 40 minutes full speed without rest and not be gassed, but it would put loads of stress on his body. I doubt there is a concrete stat on the number of air balls per season, but I would assume there was more 40 years ago than in todays NBA. But the internet exists, Those clips WILL be shared and seen by many more people than air balls 40 years ago.

I miss lockdown defense. That clip at 9:45 is a good example. Harden just gets locked down after trying a few moves. I rarely see that kind of defense. Partially because players just don't want to play it, and partially because they aren't given the opportunity since it's always a pass/shoot fest before it can even happen. Nothing gets me more hyped now than in crunch time when someone plays lockdown defense on someone that leads to a miss or steal or something that swings the momentum. While it wasn't the 90's, as a Bulls fan, I miss when we had Deng. He just played lockdown D all the time. I just watched him regardless of who else was on the court. Rudy T was a second year head coach, Mario Ellie was in his 3rd season in the NBA and was playing in Italy before that, Carl Herrera and Scotty Brooks came off the bench and in the playoffs the Rockets had to sign a guy named Chris Jent who only played 27 NBA games his entire life... They all have a ring because of Olajuwon

@@tdup191 Dirk had Jason Kidd one of the greatest PG's of all time and the Mavs winning that Finals had more to do with LeBron choking and disappearing than anything Dirk did. Wade would've made that series a sweep for the Heat if LeBron didn't choke

That’s not true though, they had a lot of underrated good role players who played off Hakeem like Clyde and The Jet which allowed him to play 1 on 1 in the post and find them for shots.

@@mrsky67 SMH Drexler didn't join the Rockets until February of 95' and the Rockets had a losing record with Clyde. The jet?! SMH so basically you didn't watch that series and don't know anything... Kenny Smith and Cassell combined avg 15ppg.. Derek Harper was the Knicks 3rd leading scorer avg 16ppg by himself. Olajuwon's next leading scorer in the Finals was Maxwell with 13ppg on 36% FG!

They have nothing to say because they weren't even watching or were alive in the 90's their credibility is shot. They have no opinion worthwhile to even listen to. Today's game: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz It's like comparing the Big 12 to SEC in football. SEC tears up the Big 12 everytime because Big 12 is weak in defense with tons of offense, while the SEC is strong in defense. It would relate the same way to 90's basketball to 20's basketball SEC is much more competitive and more fun to watch and 90's basketball was too and defense always wins championships every time.

Denver Nuggets break this narrative regarding 2020 teams. Nuggets shoot bottom 5 in 3pt attempts, is Jokic's team, Joker, Jamal, MPJ Nuggets only team, team 1st style of play built off Joker

I think what people don't get, is that great offense has always beaten out great defense, and always will. But what happens, when you can only be a great defender in the modern NBA if you're athletic and have an above average wingspan for your position, and no matter how fundamentally sound you're on defense, you're going to get smoked, since there's so many restraints on what you can do as a defender? I can't tell you how often I see players going for layups, practically shoving or holding the hand of defenders, and if the defenders show the littlest of resistance, they get called for a foul. The fact is 90's ball, ALLOWED players to go as hard on offense as they could go on defense, if they had the will and the energy to do so. Simple fact is the defenders in the modern NBA are handicapped, not by their skillset, but by the rules.
