Welcome to a new series - Crossing the Trent. We're in Nottinghamshire on the Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway (LD&ECR) - later Great Central Railway (GCR) and latterly LNER (London North Eastern Railway). In this first episode we’re on the west side of the River Trent. Before crossing, we can look around the remains of the Fledborough railway station, which opened in 1896 on the line from Chesterfield Market Place, Langwith Junction and Lincoln.
Both platforms are still present, along with the station house and cottage on the road above. Although these days largely consumed by nature, we can also see the goods platform at the rear of the station - including the toilets and building debris.
The station closed in 1955.
Next to the station, we can see the railway yard that opened in around 1960 on the entrance to the new High Marnham Power station. Now demolished, the tracks have gone, but you can see the large expanse of ballast.
The line east from High Marnham over the Fledborough viaduct was closed in 1980 after a train derailed at the other side of the viaduct. The power station was open until 1983 and continued to be served by trains from the western entrance until that time.
Here’s a stat for you - High Marnham power station burned over 10 thousand tonnes of coal per day.
