In sailing, we do a better version. I was taught to do this rolling hitch a bit differently... the wraps go higher and higher, not downwards. And on nylon or other slippery rope, I'd do many wraps. Then you can use this hitch for huge loads, not just your rainfly.
@ambidex
@ambidex Год назад
rolling hitch (edit: awning hitch) has to cross over itself so that you can finish tying it under load, whereas the knot in the video is nearly impossible to tie under load. it's kind of the worst version of this kind of knot, I wish the Scouts program that has pushed tautline for decades would have used mid-shipman's hitch which is the knot people are referring to above where you go higher and higher. And the early scout books used to teach mid-shipman's but called it tautline, before being revised at some point.

@@joestevenson5568 I know, and believe me it wasn't the weight bearing portion, just what I used to tie everything off and make all the lines taught. i was using a 50' piece of 1100 cord wrapped between my truck and a car like five or six times. And then I tied all the strands together with one taught line. Had to cut the knot apart and a few strands snapped but I got the car unstuck.

How do you tie the taut line
@Gary-uy9mr
@Gary-uy9mr 2 года назад
Also called the rolling hitch. One of the most useful knots i know, use it all the time like magic. But your final loop should go over the T line and wrapped in the opposite direction this keeps the double loop for the friction not in the right line for pressure. The way your trying it will cause it to loosen under vibration like high winds or while highway driving, like I said I've used this knot alot, including tying it incorrectly there for a bit.

@randallkornholio2971
@randallkornholio2971 Год назад
I've tied it both ways but the way tied in the video is technically correct for what is called the taught line hitch and i have used it to hold my slack line tightly when securing my kayaks to the roof of my car and it doesn't loosen when going down the road, that being said it's not the best knot for holding loads. You can also give it additional half hitches at the end to make the knot more secure, the adjustable grip hitch is more secure as well but tying the taught line hitch with the last half hitch in the opposite direction is admittedly very similar to the prusik with one less wrap so it stands to reason it would also be a secure knot. However if you want a secure knot for loads the best is definitely the truckers hitch.

I acctually remember using this knot to tighten my shorts. I needed a solution because the the common bow knot doesn't adjust; when I needed to use the bathroom in a hurry, I didn't like how long it took to untie the knot and then pull down the shorts. I needed a solution where the pants could adjust easily, but also hold when I needed them to. After experimenting with the strings, I ended up creating this knot and it worked perfectly.

I was taught this as a kid (my Dad) and relearned fresh out of college. I don't remember exactly how my Dad did it because he showed me only once, after that I only saw him play with line and lure and it was done like the one-time explanation was all I needed to last me a lifetime. My friend taught it with 5 to 7 wraps before the final splice and called it a fisherman's knot. To this day, I don't know who was less competent or who had the least amount of teaching skill, or the misinformation taught to them. Thank you for your clarification and now I must run- try it and play with it 50 times so it is engraved in my mind. It's amazing how the disinformation gets passed along, I already forgot the name of the knot...

@SineEyed
@SineEyed Год назад
No, the knot climbers use is tied going the other direction on the rope. And if that knot is ever loose enough to fail under load, no stopper knot is gonna help. In fact, that's actually an incredibly bad practice to engage in: a climber needs to know how to properly tie/set/dress every knot he uses. _Especially_ the one he ties in with. That knot gets near constant adjustment while working a tree, so there's no excuse for it becoming loose enough to think you'd need a stopper on the tail. That's the type of complacency that will fall your ass out a tree one day..

As a ScoutMaster, I find there is such a mental block on the scouts part to this knot. I realized recently, its simply a version of the clovehitch, which they all seem to learn without issue, and is a progression from a simple half hitch. It goes from Half Hitch to Two Half Hitches, to Clove Hitch, to Rolling Hitch, finally to Taut Line Hitch. Its a Clove Hitch, but an Extra Turn is done before you Cross Over.

Knowing you're knots could save your life. Knot knowledge should be compulsory in our schools. My favorite singer is Frank Knotra.

I've done similar, but with a couple of cross and go under loops before the final locking loop. Not sure if unnecessary or worse or better, but it held the tent canvas in shape, so it worked.

The very best verbal description and it was easy to see what your hands were doing. Excellent

I was a tree trimmer for many years, and I use that for my climb line, but I use two loops in the second rap. Good job.

I'm horrible with knots, but after 20 years of not fishing i still remembered how to tie the palomar fishing knot. The only knot for fishing line you will ever need to remember.

Definitely one of my most used knots. If you experiment pairing it with toggles and a bowline on one in you can make a easily deployed ridge line. From my experience it is works best with bank line.

I am currently using this knot to dry clothes in my living room through two hooks in my ceiling. A real lifesaver, not just in the wild 😂

Learned this knot in the early 70's in Boy Scouts as knots are a requirement. Used them to hold tents to stakes on every camping trip

I prefer this knot over all the mechanical doohickeys that come supplied with tents. It doesn't break, is easy to apply & loosen, holds really well, doesn't get lost and is easy to adjust.

This is what I pay my wifi bill for. Great stuff. I have been recording all these knots you thought in my personal survival guide and I use them in various occasions, just like how I use the suture patterns I learnt ;-)

The first knot the scouts teach. Quick, easy and versatile. Although it's not reccomended for many applications. It easily slips and should not hold weight.

This is the knot I would use to tie my harness to when climbing trees. Strong knot and useful when cutting down trees because you can tighten or loosen as you need to go up and down

Reading the comments from folks correcting how many loops to make, or to roll them upwards instead of downwards is just impressive. I hope we never loose this ESSENTIAL old knowledge. Too much reliance on computers and their upcoming AI. NO robot will ever going to understand the nuances of knot tying - Especially if they are as incompetent as the droids portrayed in Star Wars 😀
