The Absolute G.O.A.T of the 1500 Meters

On August 24th, 2001, the world saw something quite special. Not only did this 1500 meter race yield 2 of the fastest times ever run, but it broke through a barrier that only 3 runners have ever achieved, and it all happened in one race.

Well, there was the trio of Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett and Steve Cram. All multiple Olympic medalists and multiple World Record holders all racing each other at the same time. Constantly swopping world records. Even more crazy was the fact they were all from the same country. Cheers.
@jakubgomola2119

tbh the heat and rivarly between Coe Ovett and Cram was on an another level due to fact they were all exchanging their world records across 4 distances literally within days during their prime time so I have to agree with @John Wilson on this one. They gathered huge crowds, for example during clash of Ovett and Coe at the Moscow Olympics for the 800m 10 milion britons behind had watched the single race. Thats why I am kinda disapointed by Total Running Productions. He should cover this golden era of middle distance runners much more.
@jakubgomola2119
@jakubgomola2119 3 года назад
@HB Net Ovetts 3 year streak at the 1500 wasn't dominant? Coe being ranked every year as top 800m performer wasn't dominant? Cram for example had every title to his name (except the Olympic. They were dominant as much as they could during that era. Have you ever witnessed 2 folks exchanging world records and titles as Coe and Ovett did from 80-81? Imagine if something like that happened these days. It would literally boost our sport so much. They were dominant in different aspects, the ones people cant see on paper

It’s unfair to compare greats from one generation to the next. Makes no sense in doing so. Nutrition, tracks, spikes, science. Even the great el gerrouj in an interview in regards to roger bannister said something to the effect of, had he had the same track and spikes he woulda been right with me. A humble statement from the greatest ever.

If El Guerrouj spent more time on the 800m, he definitely would have run a 1.43 at least. But just like Wilson Kipketer in the 800m, Hicham El Guerrouj was a true specialist in the 1500m/Mile distances.

El Guerrouj possessed the ability to successfully race in a pack, as a chaser, and as a front runner. He was, without a doubt, the greatest 1500m/ mile runner in history. As of 2021 there are an increasing number of extremely fast middle distance runners that has proven to be more than ever in the past. El Guerrouj’s world records are on the verge of being beaten and I am very excited to witness that, but at the same time, I will be sad to see the crown removed from his head. One thing that I believe will never be matched is the fact that El Guerrouj owns the world records in both the 1500 meters and the mile, which absolutely makes him the king of that distance, give or take a meter or a yard. Also, the length of time that his records have stood also contributes to the validity of how amazing his performances were. Having said that, we are at a very exciting time in Athletics or Track and Field.

An excellent, well researched and edited production, as always. Only glitch was the headline at 1.00 minute, showing '2004' Olympic finals, when clearly the video was the 2000 Olympic final in Sydney. El Guerrouj trained in a similar manner to Kiwi greats, Peter Snell or John Walker. His methods of stamina and progressive speed endurance conditioning were similar to those developed by the great coaches Arthur Lydiard and Arch Jelley.

Yes, you should do a video on El Guerrouj's 1999 mile world record - one of the few times that two runners broke the previous mile world record (Elliot and Delaney in '58 was another)- and the record still stands 21 years later, the longest unbroken mile record since the IAAF started ratifying records in 1912. For me, one of the greatest 1500 performances was when El Guerrouj won the 1999 world championships in Sevilla - beating former WR holder Morcelli and Olympic champ Cacho - and running 3:27 with no pacemakers, taking it out after 800 m. It's still the Championship record - and also is faster than the Olympic Record. It's one thing to run a fast time with pacemakers with nothing at stake except your pride (and a fat cheque), it's quite another to do it for the gold medal!

Bernard Lagat was the one responsible for him not breaking that record that day. He could sense Lagat was on his heels, and because of this he didn't hug the turns well. He didn't do this so that it would be slightly more difficult for Lagat to pass him. He knew it was going to be a close race, so psychologically when you sense someone right behind you you aren't going to be way on the inside lane so that they have a harder time passing you if they choose.

I very appreciate the quality of the work you do and i am also impressionate by the amont of work you put in RU-vid as an amator, but i feel a bit unconfortable with the fact that you don't even mentioned a french performance in all your videos. I am aware, that is not your country and there are some country largely better in running and athletism in general, but it's a bit strange that you completly obterate french performance. In olympic pole you don't even mentioned Renaud Lavillenie. In 100 meters, you never talk about jimmy vicaut or critophe lemaitre. In marathon you have Alain Mimou who have 20 french record and 32 national title. Recently you have Kevin Meyer who broke the decathlon world record and you have Pierre Ambroisse Bosse who win the world championship of 800 meters after the retirement of Rudisha. And you have the most epic race of European championship of Floria Gueï.

If you don't write the name of the athlete in the title, you should at least put it in the description, great video otherwise
