The 1500 Meter World Record was set on July 14th, 1998, and since that time, only 2 athletes have ever run within 1 second of this incredible record, making it nearly invincible against all competition.
During the record-setting event, Hicham El Guerrouj from Morocco ran an almost perfect race, which certainly explains why this record has stood for so long.
Will this record ever fall? Leave a thought down below.

On a completely different topic: It's truly shocking that the footage of this, and so many other important sports milestones is being allowed to degrade so utterly. Twenty-two years ago is not that distant. Surely, the original film or tape must still exist. Hollywood movies, which are mostly fictional depictions of imaginary occurrences, are routinely archived and restored. Why aren't sporting events, which represent the culmination of thousands of hours of actual human effort and determination afforded the same care and veneration?

El Guerrouj reminds me of the racing horse Secretariat. He didn't always win. He would get caught in traffic, fall off his strategy, but when left to his instincts, he was unbeatable. This mile and his 1500 record, his pace just kept building.

Had he trained in the 800m I'm sure he would've dominated that event as well. His talent had no end. I believe his WR's will stand for some time. Twenty two years & counting is amazing & nobody has come close. I'm convinced he would've won in Atlanta had he not tripped up as he was making his move to pass Morceli. He is no doubt without question the greatest middle distance runner to have ever lived. His technique mixed in with his speed & power & finishing speed was unparalleled.
@mwasie
@mwasie 4 года назад
No I don't think he had the raw speed necessary for the 800m. I'm talking about the 400m. Wilson Kipketer was running 1:41 around the same time. He was dominant and held the record.
@anthonyg.4785
@anthonyg.4785 4 года назад
@@mwasie I got to disagree. Kipketer & that Russian dude I forgot his name were the dominant ones in the field of 800m. El Guerrouj back in '99(not even counting the WR time of 3'26 that he set in '98) ran the last 800m in 1:45.8 to finish in 3'27 which at the very least would've gotten him to the podium in 2000. That's absolutely crazy to think he was capable of that considering he had already ran a hard 700m prior to that. His finishing speed was crazy as there were times he would run 12-13 seconds in the homestretch of the final 100m.
@mwasie
@mwasie 4 года назад
@@anthonyg.4785 Um how are you disagreeing with me when you just wrote "Kipketer % that Russian dude" were the dominant once. Exactly. Hicham El G. is rare talent combined with the right body-build, mindset (mentality), Skill-set for the 1500/mile. In Moroccan interview he said something, which I found very weird that time. He printed the fall on a painting of the fall in Atlanta 1996. He was crying on that picture. Why would somebody hang-up his loss/pain on the wall?? He said, I hung it up in front of his bed on the wall and took that everywhere when he went to. Even to hotels/training camps. He said that when he wake-up, he wanted to confront myself each day with this and not forget that you not only training with body, but also with your spirit/mind/soul. You can't grow, if you run away from the pain/suffering. You must be bigger that. Only legends think like that..

You had Noah Ngeny, world record holder in the 1000 m pacing, and Daniel Komen, world record holder in the 3000 m, in that race. Everything was in place really for such a perfect race. Komen was better in the longer middle-distances, while one can only wonder what Ngeny could have accomplished without the car accident that ruined his career. el Guerrouj's mile record was also helped by Ngeny, who was 2 steps behind him. Right now, I can only see Rhonex Kipruto and Joshua Cheptegei in the 10,000 m, as 2 athletes who can mutually push each other during a race to try to beat a world record.

Even with ped they can’t beat it 😂 ppl think it’s intake ped and I’m superman 😂😂🤣🤦‍♂️ all of them takes some form of ped that can be detected or not. Don’t fool yourself to much money and glory. You can’t be competitive in Olympic wtv sport if you don’t take ped it’s has simple has that. Some country got better pass at taking ped then others it’s simple has that. Even with ped that record will stay a longgggg time like the 100m the 200m the 400m those are insanely fast time with or without ped. It takes genetic, the will , the discipline, and luck to beat those insane times. All the stars got to be align and if you see a record stands for years even with better drug and tech that means the star did not align meaning something was always missing to break it. So it’s not has simple as ppl say or think just because you take ped. I was an athlete and I’m a coach now. Lots got to be in play for an athlete to break that. It’s like a woman running sub 10sec in 100m or sub 20sec in 200m or sub 50sec or even sub 47sec in 400m ( like that East German woman ) these thing are godly hard

What made the man so special was this, in my view. He could run at very high tempo (relative to the event), for long stretches, while remaining relaxed. His last 300 was extraordinary alright. Head to your local track and see if you can run under 40 seconds for 300m. It ain't easy. His physique was made to run fast for this event and the Mile. Great leg speed, with stride length. Good 🧬 genetics, good training 🏃 and hormones like HGH equals 3:26 for 1500m. I DO NOT BELIVE HE WAS A CLEAN ATHLETE - MOSTLY HID AWAY IN MOROCCO training in the mountains with HGH human growth hormone - that is out of the system in 24 hrs of you stop injecting it 🛑

one day it will be broken, but it will take a remarkable achievement to do so, it would of been nice to see him vs Coe at his best, both supreme competitors

Wonder what El G's PBs in 100, 400 and 800m are (listed 1.47 doesn't fit the pattern, I read he clocked 1.43 in a trial, which appears much more realistic).

no, the mile isn’t ‘the most coveted and sought after record of all’ people from outside of the imperial measurement standards don’t really care too much about racing an abstract distance

@@FenceThis no , no one thinks in terms of 1500 meters, it’s always converted to miles, Pace per mile is what people think about in terms of marathon running too. Why the fools established a 3 and 3/4 lap race, 1500 meters, is beyond me.

Legend of middle distance running....
@Alan_Hans__
@Alan_Hans__ 4 года назад
Amazing run and runner. I'm pretty sure that the record could be beaten if a concerted effort was put in the beat it. In most middle to long distance races the finish time isn't indicative of how fast they could actually run. Each of the runners is either keeping stuff in reserve so that they can make a burst for the finish line or else they are outclassed by those in front who are foxing. Configure a "race" with pacesetters who are actually close to the fastest on the planet and you'll get someone who is rested to the finish line. Eliud Kipchoge showed the benefit of having others push the wind out of the way on his marathon run.

what will stay longer, the 3:26.0 WR in 1500m or the closing time of 1:46.7 for the last 800m in a 1500m final at the Olympic games?
@CSSB72
@CSSB72 Год назад
3:26.0 for sure. last 800m in 1500 will be faster after ones first 700m will be extremely slow. but for 1500m you have to run all the way fastest time. ones you lost half a second record gone.

El Guerrouj was and is the greatest ever 1500m/mile runner ever no doubts about. As for the astonishing record, well, as they say - Never say Never! By the way, what about the even more wondrous long jump (Mike Powell at 8.95m in 1991) and high jump world records (Javier Sotomayor at 2.45m in 1993) which are standing even longer than El Guerrouj's. They look even more untouchable. But who knows...
@iainjacksonpiano1

It’s amazing to think that Mike Powell’s record has now stood considerably longer than Beamon’s record that he broke. The long jump WR has been broken once in 55 years since Beamon’s jump.
