From 1996 to 1998, Daniel Komen from Kenya completely revolutionized the world of distance running. At the young age of just 20 years old, Komen started breaking world records in rapid succession. In 1996, Komen obliterated the 3000 meter world record with a time of 7:20.67 seconds (this record still stands today). The following year, Komen took hold of the 2 mile record (7:58.61) and he also temporarily held the record for the 5,000 meter record (12:39.74).
The fascinating part of this incredibly talented Kenyan runner is that his career only lasted for approximately 2 years. After setting an indoor 3000 meter record in February of 1998, Komen began running slower and slower, and ultimately, he never regained his previous form.
In this video, we'll be dissecting Komen's running career and how he came to run some of the greatest world records in track and field history.

@That Guy And his life helped him to prepare, indeed. At my own peak, I trained 100 to 112 miles each week, but I never had that 20k per day that Komen had in his youth, just running to school and back. Daniel Komen remains, unquestionably, one of the greatest runners in history. It is cruel that this same history forgets the bright flame when it brightly glows for only two to three years. Missing the Atlanta Olympic Games may have contributed to this, of course, but the Kenyan Government could have done more for such an amazing talent. Greed corrupts and poverty kills; it is one hell of a travesty.

All the athlete commentary shows on US television should perhaps do a "follow up" on athletes that should, but didn't make it. Great video, but he didn't immediately disappear after Feb 98. What is interesting is that he spent the majority of that years Golden League season focusing on the 1,500, arguably avoiding Gebrselassie. In '99 he returned to his better suited longer distances with some success. From memory he just lost out to Hissou over 5,000 in well under 13 minutes, but later outsprinted both he and Tergat in another fast 5,000 race mid season. However, in the Seville World Championships he only managed 5th when defending his title, and in 2000 he fell away further, and unfortunately missed qualification for the Sydney Olympics. By the way, that earlier 1997 World Championship wasn't merely a 13:07 run, for it contained back to back FIFTY-EIGHT second laps from Komen, mid-race, which was close to his most astonishing performance.

Whether the fruit juice allegations are true or not, I do believe that Komen was the most talented distance runner ever. He did not max out his potential on the track the way Geb or KB did. He had the potential to run a 1235 5k, and who knows what he could have done in the 10k...

Great video! Though I must say isn’t epo in the question here? Insanely fast times out of nowhere. Great decline quickly... this was epo era where detection wasn’t possible when done correctly ex: Tour de France 1990s (it was ridiculous). Long distance runners (especially in Africa where access is very easy) starting using epo and running insane times that are just starting to be approached...

99.999% sure this is the case. This was just before the first EPO tests were coming in, so it’s the sweet spot of availability, evidence of effectiveness/relative safety, competition being almost all on it, and a slight fight back by the authorities

@thamescapital2074 4 года назад
@@randomdude239 are you kidding? He ran before testing for epo! You haven't paid any attention to the dozens of positives , long bans from Kenya in last few years, even months! Currently there are 21 Kenyan Middle/Long distance runners serving bans , mainly for epo, that shows the recklesness of their doping system. Those are mainly in at competition tests! Imagine if the WADA testers were allowed to appear a ttheir "training camps" in Kenya/Ethiopia. You wouldn't have a sport and all the white guys would be just as fast for a change! Oh I said 21....that's beginning with the letter K only.

Alberto and N L, you guys are just haters. Get off the man's cock. And stop being jealous because you are both fatasses that tire quickly when walking 25 to 50 ft. Somehow y'all manage to get an enormous amount of energy when walking to the refrigerator or going to a fast food joint. If you guys are mad that the man has a happy married life is not gay, get over it. I'm certain there are some gay men out there that digs fatties. Get in shape and beat the man's record and become rich and famous. Then you guys can have all the spotlight. Kuhpeesh?

It's such a shame that Komen didn't get to run in the 1996 Olympics. I'm certain he would've crushed the field in the 5000m. And when the 2000 Olympics was held, he was already past his prime (at only 24 years old). His merits are a gold medal and a 5th place from the world championships (in 1997 and 1999). But what really stands out are his times/records, and his defeat of Haile. He's also the fastest Kenyans BY FAR in the 3k, 2 miles, and 5k. In the 3000 he's 6.51 seconds ahead of the 2nd fastest Kenyan (Kiptanui), in the 2 miles he's 7.87 seconds ahead of the 2nd fastest Kenyan (Koech), and in the 5000m he's 6.79 seconds ahead of the 2nd fastest Kenyan (Kipchoge). Komen was made of something else. One of the all-time G.O.A.T.s in track and field history.

Yes he probably would have won in Atlanta, but if he had competed there he maybe wouldn't have been so fresh afterwards as he was when he didn't participate. That's a good summation of Komens career as a senior. He also the won the world junior championships at 5 and 10.000m in -94. And was 2nd at the world junior cross country championships in -94.

I know it makes for great video to show hardship as a source of inspiration but the type of hardship in rural Kenya is not the urban slums shown here... Kenya is known for producing gifted talents such that it becomes so difficult for one to defend his or her title at the global events.. Komen knew this fact and decided to make hay while the sun was shining bright..rather than wait to be upstaged at the olympics or world championships and loose the bonuses that comes with being a record holder or one having the worlds fastest time..he made sure that he ran away with all that was in the offing as fast as he could..that was a good strategy

They are still talking about what Roger Bannister did. He was a household name when I was growing up. Days later the 4 minute mile was broken again, and then again, and again. Now there is a long list of sub 3:50 guys BUT a Sub 8 minute 2 mile!!! Bannister left no mark on the record books. He was just the first, great. But this guy is one of greatest runners of all time and almost no one knows his name. Tragic!
