THE ABYSS (1989) | First Time Watching! | MOVIE REACTION!!! 

The underwater breathing fluid was for real, but there were so many issues with it that the navy gave up trying to make it work. The worst was that it is so tiring pushing the heavy liquid in and out of your lungs that your breathing muscles give out. Then it removes the protective mucus from the lungs inner surface, and the hurt like fire when the fluid is expelled. Also the fluid provides oxygen just fine, but removing carbon dioxide is a real challenge. There are also other problems with functioning at depth that the fluid doesn’t help solve, like the shakes they did Bud was starting to get on the way down - they don’t get better, they get worse.

8:15, I read the book tie-in to this film. It gives a very interesting look into the backgrounds of the characters: - Bud is the son of a Marine Corps Sergeant. He lost his older brother in a swimming incident as a little boy. Because of his family's connection to the military and the loss of his brother, he was pretty much ready to go on the mission from jump. Bud just pretended to be adverse to helping the Navy because he wanted to know his crew would be safe. When Lindsay isn't around being extra, Bud has a very calm nature which comes from his parents who never really argued. - Lindsay is the youngest daughter of a wealthy engineering executive and his aloof trophy wife. Of her parent's children she was the only one who inherited her father's interest in the sciences. So from an early age she was her daddy's favorite and would get to work on science stuff while her older sisters went to ballet and etiquette classes. Because her parents were in a marriage of convenience, she took Bud's lack of confrontation as a sign he really didn't love her. So she would constantly pick fights to get his undivided attention. In the end Bud wasn't going to act crazy to make her feel loved. So to keep from being hurt and abandoned by Bud, Lindsay started an affair with a younger more educated man. The guy she was having the affair with was the exact type of guy her sisters married which hurt Bud deeply. - Lt. Hiram Coffey grew up under a single mom in an underprivileged neighborhood. When his mother married his stepfather she began to ignore him and have other children. Hiram joined the Navy to live his life with purpose and to find a sense of family. Were it not for the high-pressure nervous syndrome he was experiencing he would have been a cool dude to work with. The book also tells what happened to the characters after the NTI city rose to the surface. Bud, Lindsay and several of the team go onto become ambassadors between the NTIs and the human race. Basically, the course of human history is changed for the better after this movie.

In the book the NTI's are actually a lot more involved in what's going on in this story than the movie shows. They are a bit of a deus ex machina. 27:39,Jammer suffered such a critical gas mix issue with his tank, that he would have never normally come out of his coma. So the NTI's used their mastery of gases and fluids to repair his brain for him. That's how he just popped up out of nowhere. 30:47, Cat showing up to save the day was also a case of the NTI's helping out. After Bud, left him at the hatch Cat was so ashamed that he began the swim to the moon pool. However, he was so tired and beyond his natural limits that he almost drowned on the way there. As he was about to go under, the NTI's reached into his mind and saw why he was doing something so foolhardy. They read Cat's mind and recognized his willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good. They understand he was trying to help Bud stop Coffey from attack them. This act of altruism further convinced them that humans weren't just advanced animals, that we were rational and have a sense of honor and decency. So they manipulated the gases within his body to give him the boost needed to finish his swim.

This movie has a lot of problems behind the scenes:. James Cameron was going through a divorce with his wife Gale Anne Hurd at the time, after 4 years of marriage. He would yell at the cast and crew for not doing a good job on any of the scenes. Ed Harris punched Cameron in the race after he grew tired of his constant yelling. Cameron nearly drowned during the filming of the scene where Bud and Catfish are swimming from one side of the platform to the other. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio walked off the set following her resuscitation scene and had to be filmed over and over again, causing her to get slapped around,before Cameron yelled "Cut!" She said to the crew, "We are not animals!" A hurricane hit the set of the movie, causing filming to be shutdown until the damage could be repaired. After filming had wrapped, the cast and crew tore down the set with their bare hands to let out all the rage anger and frustration of working with Cameron. Ed Harris was driving 5 miles from the set, he pulled over to the side of the road and broke down crying after 4 months of working with Cameron was finally over.

22:44 Lindsay is good at reading machines but not people. She is so mad at the SEALs being present, mad at Bud and just plain mad she doesn’t realize Coffey is off his rocker. Bud is good at reading people. He is an experienced diver so he knew Lt. Coffey wasn’t acting correctly. That’s why he hit the alarm.

that drowning scene is an all-time , hall of famer. good movie. great on the big screeen. except they couldn't figure out the ending. keep on rockin

The Special Edition is the best version. But regardless, i consider The Abyss to be James Camerons Close Encounters of The Third Kind. Its very underrated and underappreciated

Some may be disappointed you didn't watched the director's cut but I think this version is actually better in that it leaves the aliens more mysterious.

See, in the US Armed Forces, it's not about unquestioningly following orders. It's about _leadership._ Every branch of the US Armed Forces has a list of leadership traits and principles that they have taught since at least as far back as the 1950s. One of the traits is initiative. A good leader must have _initiative._ The orders Lt. Coffey was given were by people removed from this situation; people unaware of the _nuances_ of this situation, and therefore, not in a position to _account_ for those nuances. Therefore, Lt. Coffey and his team _must_ account for them. That's what initiative means.

James Cameron has a hit record like no other director. I just wish he wasn't so obsessed with Avatar. Not my favorites.

I wish you had watched the Special Edition. It’s way better.
