I have Autism. This movie taught me, sparked me, and was what gave me the energy to start asking questions. Although the internet was not around at this point... I did with what I had. The concepts this movie has all wrapped into it from philosophical to scientific are what to this day keep me locked away in my private lab working endlessly on my expirements. Although Im alone with no friends or family or anything but a cat... Im happy.
One of the most underrated films of all time I think. It came out in 1989, a year that was full of submarine movies or undersea creatures. And since it wasn't Aliens or Terminator, some people didn't know James Cameron had spent so long making this quiet, dark, claustrophobic masterpiece. It was like a surprise sci-fi, but it really shouldn't be a surprise. Speaking of sci-fi, I also recommend the book version by Orson Scott Card. :)
This film brings back such memories for me, this music made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, tears filled my eyes and I watched the sheer beauty of this film with my family, still a young boy and with no fears in the world. 30 years later........ damn 😔
The worst surely upon us times beczuse were a stubborn.Mainly of the nature of sin. There is no one of human born justified to be perfect and think they Never done wrong But forgoten about Jesus Or refuse as such existed! How many cany really know how this score was transpired? What an amazing score to an amazing movie. "You never backed away from anything in your life! Now fight!" "You have to look with better eyes than that (Coffey's)" I mean, these characters are so wonderful, they don't even seem real. But, then again, I haven't felt more engaged by a scene in anyone else's films than I did when they were trying to revive Lindsey. That is some powerful shit.
A lot of people criticize this movie based on the poor alien creature effects towards the ending. The fact is that this is a brilliant movie expertly made by a director who was at the height of his directing powers (he only gave us two other great movies after that; T2 and True Lies). He stepped out and did something no-one had done before by shooting a huge part of it under water. To my mind it features everything a movie should have to make it a great one. It incorporates some of the best characterization I have ever seen, a likable and believable protagonist, amazing supporting actors, a near-perfect script, establishes a real bond between the audience and characters, offers unique scenes which have been copied but never equaled, and manages to squeeze in more than one act of believable self-sacrifice. Oh, and one of the most beautiful musical scores I have ever heard. So the guys from another world look a bit plastic. So what?
sonorman44 in my opinion it is one of the best pictures made by Cameron. Most people consider T2 or Aliens as his best movie - I think he's the best when it comes to the sea...his best stuffs are Abyss and even it is not an "original" idea, but a recreation of a real-life event, Titanic :)
Beautiful movie. I was watching it the other night and the bit when he gets taken down to the deep Abyss by the alien creatures has so many feels to it no matter how many times I see it.
i still remember this in the theaters in 1989 looking at the floor around me upon hearing the submarines dripping water everywhere...lol.. the surround sound was that convincing.... unbeleivable movie - the best part is that you feel bonded to the characters, submarine, and the ocean... when they come up at the end and surface, you feel like you suraface too after being underwater for weeks... a moving film
Similar experience and feelings here also watching it in cinemas back in the Fall of 1989, I was 15 and left the theatre in awe. Since then one of my all time favorite movies and looking forward to experiencing it in 4k in a few days. Greetings from Spain!
Stunning. It's beyond me how anyone could not appreciate something as moving and stimulating to the senses. 4 people obviously spent too long staring into the abyss before hitting that dislike button
A rollercoaster ride of a film. The soundtrack is gorgeous. I'm well into film scores to begin with so this was a joy to me. Went to the pictures to see it and was on the edge of my seat all the way. Was absolutely knackered at the ebd
1:10-1:40 defines something so huge and grand. Like seeing Heaven in all it's spectacular splendor as your eyes become blinded by the immensity and awesomness of such grand, garguation scale
I think this is one of the very best movies ever made. I cannot understand why it did not do well at the box office. I have the movie and have watched it so many times, I know half the dialogue by heart. When I watch the movie, I can recite half the dialogue.
HIS NAME IS James, James Cameron THE bravest pioneer,no budget too steep no sea to deep, WHO'S THAT ITS HIM James Cameron, James Cameron! the explorer of the sea! With a dieing thirst to be the first COULD IT BE? That's him! James Cameron!
Mohag Yep...i've been thinking this for ages! Why hasn't this ever been released on bluray? In my favourite 10 films of all time...Instead we have to endure 3 more Avatar films it seems....the first Avatar was okay but The Abyss is my favourite Cameron film and he should release it before we're too old!
It was initially supposed come on Blu-Ray in 2009 for it's 20th anniversary, but Cameron was so busy working on Avatar that he seemed to never notice his film's birthday. Until James Cameron's name is in the hype again, we won't be seeing a speck of hope for an upcoming blu-ray release...
To everyone who enjoyed this, you need to see the directors cut, even better !!!!!!!! A better ending ,explaining what the aliens can do and probably what we deserve!!!
paul lane I saw the director’s cut a few years ago. Man. What a difference. Absolutely, positively overwhelming. With a grand message. I recommend it highly.
Revu il y a une semaine, juste génial. Un monde encore inconnu qui peut nous révéler beaucoup de choses.... je ne serai, je pense, plus là pour le savoir 😢
Music is beautiful:) Actually the tidal wave wasn't included in the original movie because the company that did the special effects wasn't able to pull it off realistically. Also it was a controversial scene - some people said it was their favourite, others said it was their least favourite. Obviously I thought it was my favourite:) If you haven't seen the special edition, do. It changes the whole movie.
@Jokhalli I for one completelly agree with you on this one. However we are much closer than one might think. OH and about this soundtrack it`s very very beautiful!
