If you’re the kind of chess player who lives for ultra-sharp, attacking games and are ready to play for a win every time you sit down at the board, then the Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon variation should be in your repertoire!
The Accelerated Dragon 🐉 is one of the most aggressive chess openings for Black against 1.e4. As the name suggests, the Acclerated Dragon improves on the standard Sicilian Defense Dragon variation by leaving out the d7-d6 move. Instead, Black gets to fianchetto his Dragon bishop and castle one move earlier.
Does Black lose anything by not playing …d6? No, Black actually GAINS by later playing d7-d5 in ONE move! That’s what makes the Accelerated Dragon one of the best chess openings for Black: a great position with dynamic possibilities and the luxury of an extra move!
The Accelerated Dragon is very versatile as it can be easily transposed to from a variety of Sicilian Defense variations.
In this video, a free chapter from his 2.5+ hour chess course “Destroy White with the Accelerated Dragon”, Grandmaster Eugene Perelshteyn, introduces the basic move orders, tactical motifs, and positional concepts of this fascinating chess opening for Black.
GM Perelshteyn, a lifelong player of the Accelerated Dragon, shows the immediate benefits of the Accelerated Dragon over the Sicilian Defense Dragon variation.
In the standard Dragon, White can launch a scarily rapid kingside attack by hurling his g and h-pawns down the board and ripping the position open. Bobby Fischer used to say that winning against the Sicilian Dragon is easy, it’s just a case of “sac,sac and mate!” And Bobby Fischer proved that MANY times over the board, against as players as skilled as Bent Larsen.
But that doesn’t happen in the Accelerated Dragon! What’s the best antidote to an attack on a wing? A counter in the center! Having wasted no time on the ineffectual …d6, Black is able to play …d5 immediately. And suddenly White has no time for a kingside attack as the center is getting ripped open - and often his king is still stuck there!
Check out this superb video for more insights into why the Accelerated Dragon should be your new favorite opening for Black!
The Accelerated Dragon has been proven extensively at the highest levels of chess, evidenced by its regular use by strong Grandmasters including Vladimir Kramnik, Viktor Korchnoi, Vassily Ivanchuk and Alexander Morozevich.

I found this to be one of the best opening commentaries on RU-vid. No offense to any other instructors on this channel, but many can be difficult to understand because of their English, and often cover lines you will not encounter in play. I thought this guy did a great job of covering what needed to be covered and was a great primer for getting into the Hyper Accelerated Dragon. I liked how he explained the benefits and drawbacks, as well as quickly reviewing every line again. Will be looking out for more from this GM, thank you for the upload.

I purchased the DVD after watching this , and it's very thorough and well organized and easy to follow . i've been playing the hedgehog against the sicillian with good results but i'm getting tired of the positions.i wanted something more aggressive but without getting massacred on the king side . this is it for me . lots of tactics and it can get nice and messy! but also positional as well. good job GM Perelshteyn ! should have titled it the hyper accelerated though .

I played the move order 1. Nf3 c5 2.e4 g6 3 d4 ed4: 4. Nd4: Bg7 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. Be3 Nf6 7. f3 d5 After which my opponent plays Bb5, similar to the Rosselino attack. In other words white does not have to take on d5 on the eigth move. I did pretty much as you showed on the vid, but i fail to see why white has to take.
@rudineter
@rudineter 10 лет назад
In such lines black should always caste before playing d5. Just like in this video black castles first white did Qd2 and then you play d5. The difference is that after caste Bb5 has no effect because ur king isn't on e8 anymore.

Lots of good information on several of the standard variations in the Accelerated Dragon. You seem to overlook the fact that Bb5 can be played at various other points in the game, still with pressure on the Queenside. I think this is a weakness of the AD, at least in my mind. I always want to play a6 early to prevent it, but this does seem to be a bit slow.

O-O. but what if on move 5 instead of going Nc3 white decides to take the Knight on c6? do i take with the b-pawn and carry on my merry way? i'm just a beginner. P.S. This was the best explanations that I have found for chess, I love the commentary and I love the explanations keep it up!
@ChesscomGames
@ChesscomGames 6 лет назад
You would always want to take it with a pawn that goes toward the centre, so preferably b-pawn. Having said that, there are many players who take with the d-pawn to induce originality in the position, which can quickly become tactical by nature.

At 13:00 the ideal white queen move seems to be c4. The fork you are hoping for to take the white knight on e5 is cancelled (After you move black queen to a5, white queen moves to c3, covering both white knight, blocking check whilst attacking unprotected black queen). I don't see how black doesn't end up materially worse
@ChesscomGames
@ChesscomGames 6 лет назад
Yes, it works but it is positionally weak. After Qc4, d5 is coming. If exd6, Qxd6 or exd6 with Black's white-square bishop roaring out to e6. Black is better. :-)

Good one. I needed to switch to the Acc. dragon to try to avoid some of the critical Yugoslav attack lines that are rather favorable to White. This seems to be the antidote. You don't cover here the line 1 e4 c5 2. Nf3 g6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nc6 5. c4 Nf6 6. Nc3 d6! 7 Be2 Nxd4 which is popular now and a nice way for Black to get a crucial tempo.
