The Acolyte Season 1 Finale Review: Another Epic Disney Star Wars FAIL

The Acolyte started off badly, got infinitely worse in Episode 3, then rebounded a bit in the second half. Unfortunately, nothing in the season finale was earned and even some big cameos couldn't save this show from the terrible writing and half-baked story. What a joke.

Anakin slaughtering sand people because his mother enslaved and killed, so, yeah super angry: blue lightsaber Anakin chopping off Mace Windus hand because>>>Palpatine dead>>>>Padme probably dead: blue lightsaber Anakin accepting the name 'Darth Vader', kills younglings, kills separatists, fights his father figure/brother after force choking Padme then thinking Obi Wan 'turned her against me' and fights him: blue lightsaber Luke snapping on his father on the 2nd Death Star after the life of his sister is threatened, chops off Vaders hand after lightsaber is beaten from Vaders hand: green lightsaber. Acolyte: I just got super angry and now my lightsaber is red. The concept of bleeding a kyber crystal is canon, sure, but it wasn't executed well with the inconsistency,. We've gone from the Sith seeking power through selfish, often murderous, violent actions and the Jedi seeking power through selflessness to a moral relativism that just doesn't work in the Star Wars universe. I've often heard people say that A Song of Ice and Fire is comprised of 'grey ' characters who are 'not black or white, good or bad', but it's just not true. It's a more complex world than, say, Star Wars, but good and bad still exist in Westeros. It's that struggle between the good and the bad where the real drama is able to unfold - and, unfortunately, that means 'objectively good' and 'objectively bad' have to exist, else that drama would not be able to exist. When you remove that, you get stories like The Acolyte. We're living in a time when the folks who are chosen to tell their stories to the wider world do not share the same values - or even aspire to the same values - as the creators who came before them. The people telling their stories now don't seem to aspire to anything more than convincing the rest of the world that their ideas are better than traditional ones. I expect we'll be getting more shows like The Acolyte. Whether anyone will continue to tune in to watch any future travesties is another story.

The last scene is bad because, as you say, it drags Yoda into this mess. It's also a reminder that the showrunner cast her own spouse in a major role. That questionable decision reminds me of another disappointment: Godfather III.
@Draconisrex1
@Draconisrex1 3 месяца назад
I wonder how Yoda forgot all about this... He was over 800 years old as he'd previously been training Jedi for 800 years when first met Luke. And Grogu was still (stupidly) a toddler at 50... So we know it must have taken (due to their basic failure to understand the biology of long-lived species) over a 100 years for Yoda to be old enough to train.
@nicolasferreiro4492
@nicolasferreiro4492 3 месяца назад
In this case slow growing up actually works: the Force is learned through instinct, so their slow growing cycle gives them advantage. Otherwise there's no way the species would have been able to survive (which was my first thought regarding a 50 yo baby).

- That intro haha! I think we all wanted a BA Wookie - Bad writing. This feels like fanfic, not a tv show from an epic franchise. - Amandla's acting was... not quite the level it needed to be for that role. - I like a little mystery. Agreed, stop feeling the need to explain everything. - I really dislike the way they portray the Jedi in this. Did they all have to be such idiots? - We needed more Sith story. Such a waste. - Needed 8 1hr episodes (and a few good writers) to flesh things out a bit more. Final thoughts: This was straight up money laundering.

I don't know if anyone else feels this way....but for those of us who watched the original movies as children....this hurts. We had to wait YEARS in between each movie and back then it was a series everyone loved and couldn't wait for the next one. Now we are older and if not wiser....more experienced. So the things that I think newer (younger, less experienced) viewers think is either cool (ohhhhh, lets take something thats seen as "good" and twist it....make it "evil") or think these "twists" are something new and smart. OH and perhaps even there is something of seeing the breadcrumbs left by the writers and when they make the connection a little lightbulb goes off in their head....OH....wait.....I see it...the DEEPER meaning....there is no deeper meaning....not very often...not when you have a knowledge of how movies are made and stories are written.....I'm going back under my rock. 😭

The "Jedi Bad" is just an allegory for "Police Reform" It starts as we learn with Venestra saying in Episode 1 that if they report the murders to the Jedi Council, the Senate will get involved. Adara saying to Sol in episode 7 that "they should not report this to the Jedi Council" citing that Osha (Just like the Federal Safety Agecy's name) will be taken away or outcast. I don't understand why they would be any less accepting of an older Padawan if they told "the truth". That Senator wanting the Jedi to have an external review is something that Venestra causes by the opacity of her acts. As if she is playing spoiler so the Jedi are diminished. In short, Jedi are space cops, all cops are bad therefore Jedi bad. The one thing that I disliked the most outside of the ping-pong deathmatch of character motivation, was the implicating of Yoda in any sort of malfeasance. None of it made sense to me. I didn't understand the character's motivations or their motivations were so all over the map it was hard to follow. Also problematic is having Ki-Adi-Mundi, who proclaimed when Qui-Gon Jinn told the story of Darth Maul attacking him on Tatooine “Impossible. The Sith have been extinct for a millennium.” have some knowledge of a force sensitive attacking and killing Jedi, possibly a Sith, 50 years before he was supposed to be born. They were messing with the Rule of Two, by showing Tenebrous/Plagueis. I agree with you, this whole thing with Sol "murdering" the space witch doesn't hold up. She started transforming into a black tendriled force cloud with black eyes and long sharp teeth and the girl started dissolving too at that same time. That looks pretty suspect at the very least. That's kinda like saying, the officer is guilty of murder because he shot the guy pointing the gun at him before the officer got hit with a bullet. The frustrating thing is that there are elements of this whole series that if you were to describe it at a high level as two sisters who have a shared trauma relating to the Jedi which has put them down opposite paths. They are both very powerful in The Force and have to reconcile their destiny within It from very different philosophical perspectives that will cast doubts over how justified the Jedi are as a force of peace throughout the galaxy. There is a lot you can do within this premise in the hands of good writers. Sadly that has not been the case in this series.

In my opinion the Acolyte would have made a better show if it was a loose adaptation of the Plagueis novel. That book is way too sophisticated for the writers of the Acolyte to do justice to so who do you get to be the head writer and show runner….Beau Willimon. And then have him transform the show into a cross between Star Wars and House of Cards with political intrigue and shady corporate dealings, assassinations and secret plotting behind the scenes just like in the book. Elevate the story of the beginning of the fall of the Jedi and the Republic and the rise of the Sith to a smart political thriller like Andor elevates Star Wars. There are many ways the show could be better and mine is just one opinion and it was what I actually was hoping the show would be. The original pitch had the potential to be that anyway.

I’ve really appreciated your reviews throughout this root canal of a show. It leaves me ever more frustrated that Star Wars fans can’t receive a game of thrones quality show. House of the Dragon is awesome tv based off a book taken from the giant universe that is game of thrones. And it does all of that while also having a diverse cast. For this period of star wars, the Darth Plagueis book already filled in the timeline. It follows the Sith, tells their story, and makes the Jedi look like fools because they fail to ever detect the Sith directly in their midst. Instead we got whatever this was.

Personally, I’m fine with just the original (A New Hope), it’s a complete film: it has a beginning, a middle and an end. I think Disney or whoever, looks at Star Wars as if it’s Star Trek- countless episodes in several seasons and a few spinoff series. But for myself this franchise has always been 3 movies (pre-Special Editions) and that’s it. However Andor was an amazing show. I don’t feel Rogue One was needed, though I enjoyed it. Amazing what passes for writing at LF. I honestly want to know what the creative process was for this? How did the script get to this? This entire show feels like half translated ideas. Everything is abbreviated and deprived of substance, leaving a bald sentence where we could have had a chapter. The other thing that dawned on me was that jedi was outright meant to be uncharacteristic of actual jedi. Leslye takes this vetted sector of "jedi" and runs off it to develop a reason that pushes Osha to the dark side. Unfortunately, it doesn't work because this is not talented writing. There's no nuance or additional depth to the offenders or muddied by qimir to help Osha's fragmented memory of the event get painted in a light that is suitable for this guy to use. There's so many creative ways you could have made jedi bad to the protagonists without beating the audience over the head as Sol is quickly butchered to generate this idea of an obsessive murderer. This would normally make him unsympathetic but since the development that is done is so uncompelling for demonstrating that Sol has any malicious blame, they then have this corrupt and incompetent jedi master vernestra use his legacy as a dirty rag for no believable reason. It just feels disgraceful because it is so blatant. Throwing in the senator who spurns them as a cult in this extended exchange with vernestra who has no real answer and couldn't give one anyways because her character is the worst possible interpretation of a jedi, a power hungry hypocrite who's loyal to their interpretation of the jedi mandate. I could go on. I wanted something good. This story was too complex to write for whoever actually made this. And LF said, "Good job, send it out."

I despise this show too. Not because it's bad or incompetent, that's forgivable. But because it's executed in such a mean-spirited and spiteful way, with a sneering impunity that just erupts out of the screen, out of every ludicrous explainer interview that Headland does, and the mind-blowingly poor choices for press and mid-season PR. It's appalling. Here's a test: who wins? who loses? And the answer to that is all anyone need know about the messaging.

At the original movies, the packed theaters of fans stood up and clapped and cheered after the movie was over. When was the last time you had that feeling or reaction? Have you experienced that in a theater before? Disney is VERY far off from creating that level of fan appreciation, that level of quality, or that level of reaction. It would be smart for them to at least learn, listen, or feign curiosity in what created that, what elements were essential, or what *universally* resonated. I would assert, regardless of whether you liked the Acolyte or not, this content is not close to any resemblance of that type of reaction, and is clearly missing what created that level of universal and fanatic appeal.

Post an outline of an 8 episode show, set in the Star Wars universe, 1 hour each episode. Using your murder mystery theme/police procedural idea. I really want to see that fleshed out. Use the cast of players from the Acolyte series or make all your own or any cast of charters you like. How about Ashoka, with her legit padawan, can be Sabine or maybe use a young Rey and just use this story as a way to uncanonize TFA and the rest and take the Jedi on a new being as part of Lukes's new Jedi order, maybe Ashoka will live as long as Yoda now because of the world between worlds and her age will not be an issue. I don't know. If you do I will run a D20 Star Wars game with that main plot line or run my players through the murder mystery.

Erik, I'm with you on the Vader, Luke, and Palps scene at the end of ROTJ. I get chills and tear up every time I watch it. Even with a "face" that cannot physically emote (because it's and actual mask), as Vader looks back and forth between the Emperor and his son, the force lightning flashes on Vader's helmet, you can "see" the emotions and thoughts going through his head. Ugh. Chills.

We're not going to get heroic Jedi because third-wave feminist don't believe in the classic heroic journey framed by sacrifice, growth, failure and redemption. This is particularly true with a male protagonist. The problem is they don't have an ethically satisfying story structure to replace those time-tested elements. Worse, the producers don't care about the quality of the writing even when that is clearly one of the reasons people aren't watching. It is the soul that has been stripped out of these IPs and we are left with the veneer.

I consider the prequels 3 of the 6 Star Wars movies. I saw Return of the Jedi 3 time in the theater when I was 6, so it took a lot to come after. But I was happy with the prequels. Definitely. This show, like kenobi and boba and the like are just shameful.

Andor and Rogue One are examples of how backstory can work and be entertaining. I think the problem was the whole witch / brendock story line, rather than the twins. So many irrational decisions and manufactured drama. They could have spent more time with plageius, showing him to plant the idea of the Jedi in a young Osha's head, and the idea of saving Osha's in Sol's head. But without justification for those irrational decisions, it felt unearned. Bazil too....why sabotage the ship?

He could sense Anakin murdering the Tusken Raiders on Tatooine all the way in the Outer Rim from the Jedi temple on Coruscant. Do you really expect us to believe he didn't sense what's going on. Also, Ki Adi-Mundi shouldn't be there in the first place because he wasn't born yet, and Disney can go fellate '"The Stranger's" lightsaber for dragging Adi-Mundi, Yoda, and damn Darth Plagueis into this chernobyl level disaster of a show. In a sane world, this show never gets a second season. However, the fact it got green lit at all doesn't exactly inspire hope that there's any sanity left at LucasFilm.

For the writers is Sol's affective attachment to Osha is supposed to be a weakness? Is their reasoning something like "if anger is a negative vis-a-vis the Force, then so is love and the desire to protect a child from harm"? I found Sol's willful love and emotion for Osha to be wonderful qualities that should have moved her at least in the direction of understanding Sol's actions, not rage.

My son was 10 when we saw the last Jedi. He turned to me and said, “that’s the best movie ever.” Seven years later he doesn’t even care about Star Wars. He watched way more than I did too. He watched the clone wars and he loved the prequels. Star Wars has lost 3 generations of fans. The OT, prequel and sequel fans have all gone away. All that’s left are the shills saying let’s go and redacting to colours. I was 10 when I saw Return of the Jedi. It was the first Star Wars movie I saw in theatres. Empire is a better movie but Jedi will always have a soft spot in my heart. It’s because it’s the first time we final see Luke doing something impressive. In a New Hope he gets the lucky shot, in empire he gets his ass kicked but in Jedi he is in control and fighting everyone.

Amandla Stenberg had to play Osha, Mae, Osha pretending to be Mae, Mae pretending to be Osha, dark side Osha and not so dark side Mae. And every one of those performances felt very similar. Just look at what Tatiana Maslany did on Orphan Black. Every one of her characters felt like a different person. And I don't want to blame the actress for that - this is probably more a failure in directing.

Osha's "journey" was an object lesson in terrible writing. Dragged along without agency by the plot for 3/4 of the show and then thrust into the limelight by nonsensical character shifts and contrivance plot development. As you say, nothing she does is earned or has ANY continuity of character. She not a "character" at all in fact. She's a tool of the plot. Awful show coming from someone who has watched every minute of Disney Lucasfilm live action without too much effort up to this point. 2/10 for the series.

I completely agree with you. There is so much wrong with every single scene of this episode. I felt so confused as nothing made sense, such as why couldn't the blood test be used as evidence for the vergence? My brain is numb. It just contradicted the PT and even the OT, by recontextualising George's Star Wars. I see this show and especially this episode as a huge f...u to George. I saw a lot of copy and paste from the OT and PT, the Sol and Qimir fight scene ( channeling of Anakin and Obi Wan, not as intense and as good) and how Osha turned to the dark side and becoming powerful ( channeling Anakin), implying she is more powerful than Anakin. Even the end scene with Qimir and Osha is a reflection of Luke and Leia's scene from ESB, but this is the dark version. This episode blatantly depicted how evil the Jedi are and the Sith aren't that bad, because of justified reasons to turn to the dark side.

It was so poorly written it makes you ask, why are there producers that are failing upwards in Disney? This could have been a good show. But the story at the centre of it is deliberately full of big gaping holes. You can't get people invested in things with shaky foundations. Just terrible writing.

Writing teachers should assign kids to watch The Acolyte and then write papers on all the various ways the writing sucked. The kids would like it more than reading Ivanhoe but the basics of storytelling apply regardless. (Bonus assignment: watch Game of Thrones and rewrite the ending.) It wasn't till I saw the full series that I realized there were two huge flaws. #1 the story begins with the Jedi on a mission to discover the "vergence" of the Force on the Nightsisters' planet. Why? What would happen if they failed to discover it? Would the galaxy explode? Everything that happens in the story happens because of their urgency on this mission, but it was never clarified what's at stake. They barged into someone else's home and tried to lure their children away. What the hell? They blathered on like bigots about how evil the Nightsisters are. I never saw anything evil about them. That one Nightsister was pretty assertive about defending her children, who she gave birth to, hello. I don't think that's a crime. The Jedi justified their atrocious behavior because they had to find the vergeance and the twins were proof. If the galaxy was going to explode if they fail, fine. Trespass and kidnap children. If it's just something to put in your report to the Jedi Council which will just sit on a shelf, hell no. Get lost and leave the Nightsisters alone. The whole story had a huge honkin'' plot hole at the center. Everything else could have worked and it still would have sucked. #2 Why did the twins need to be "the same person" and not twins? They never once did anything that wouldn't have worked just as well if they had been twins. The concept behind the lead character was, I'm not sure flawed is the right word. Irrelevant is the right word. Plot hole story + irrelevant lead character. No season 2. And Disney, please be more careful who you hire in the future. Make sure they know how to write a competent story first.

To me, this "show" is a damning indictment on a whole host of issues that I truly cannot condense into a few words, but the easiest and most important portion of failure is the story. It's derivative of a derivative and comes across as complete amateur hour at every turn. The feel of scenes being outbof sequence and jammed together with little to no coherence is a sign this thing was chopped up and stiched back together with zero narrative consideration in editing. The acting in this show was atrocious too. As much flak as the prequels get for being hammy as all get out, at least those characters were consistent from scene to scene. This show is like a fever dream for a lot of it. Just a bizarre and utterly terrible experience as a whole.

I think your point about the target audience was what I agreed with most. It’s time for Disney to look at Marvel and Star Wars and admit they lost their audience in a misguided attempt to be inclusive. I think alienating your core audience is bad business but Disney seems to be more about pushing a moral message than truly entertaining.
