I grew up in Greece in the 70’s and here’s what we ate (the whole country) - light breakfast, slice of bread with butter and jam or honey. Big lunch - main meal of the day - after 2pm (natural intermittent fasting), light supper snack no later than 8pm. Dinner was NEVER a sit down meal more of a snack - fruits veggies nuts, possibly some dairy or yogurt. 1. Red meat once per week, primarily lamb or pork - not beef. Chicken as a substitute for red meat often. 2. Fish once or twice per week, small fish, sardines, minnows, calamari, octopus, mullets, sea bass or branzino 3. Salad with every lunch. There was no lunch without a Greek salad - greens in the winter - tomatoes cucumbers feta onion in the summer (seasonal salads). Salad dressing was strictly Olive oil with red wine vinegar and sea salt plus oregano. 4. Legumes, beans, lentils and fresh organic veggies every day. Soups like bean soup lentil soup chickpea soup, etc. Fried foods like French fries were introduced in the 80’s. Fried was only fried fish like cod, calamari or minnows. Cereal for breakfast was introduced in the 80’s no good.

What almost no one ever talks about is that extreme diets are often interventions to an existing problem. This is why you have evidence on both sides that the radical change solved so many issues for the individual and the assumption is that it is the proper diet for everyone be it vegan or carnivore, etc. Just because one might have a peanut allergy does not mean peanuts are unhealthy for all. This video is very balanced and simply states what years of research have shown to be the most healthy diet for most human beings. It is a matter of trying to tilt the odds in your favour.

Stop eating processed food...simple.
@avenwildsmith2
@avenwildsmith2 3 месяца назад
The problem isn't processed food, it's the ultra-processed foods that are increasingly commonplace in people's diets. Processing food by chopping, blending, or cooking can be very beneficial and aid nutritional uptake, but overprocessing it by extracting ingredients from food, modifying them, then putting them back into food, is what puts stress on the body. Basically, if there is a food you would be unable to make yourself at home with regular ingredients, it's been processed too much.
@TXRhody
@TXRhody 3 месяца назад
The term "processed foods" is a very broad category, which ranges from hot dogs to olive oil. Not all processed foods are equal. In fact, not all ultra processed foods are equal. Studies about ultra processed foods are skewed by things like lunch meats, cheese wiz, cookies, crackers, etc. That doesn't necessarily mean things like pea protein and miso are going to kill you.

Nope. Many animals will eat unhealthy diets if given access to items scarce in their natural environment but essential in small amounts, probably because those with a genetically coded love of the taste would do the work to search the items out. Rats are very, very like us in the love of junkfood, for example. A story from zoology: researchers regularly use a spread of local foods to find out what a little-studied animal eats in nature, and use the cardboard box the food was carried in as a control. Quokkas on an island where the growth was high water content preferred the cardboard, though the plants had vital nutrients.

I think his view on saturated fat is based on a long held view started by the sugar industry in the sixties bribing 2 Harvard professors to say that sugar is not unhealthy in any way and to point the finger at fat instead. That kicked off the low fat/no fat movement and the rise of insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes. There’s actually no causal link between saturated fat and heart disease. There are studies that have said that any evidence showing saturated fat causes heart disease is weak at best.

The reason whole-fat foods are generally healthier than low-fat or no-fat foods, is the lack of added sugar. Food usually tastes terrible when the fat is removed, so to compensate for that, sugar is typically added. If you eat something with no fat and no sugar, it probably has no flavor. When it comes to fat or sugar, fat is absolutely the lesser evil, so go for full-fat yogurt, instead of the non-fat yogurt that has teaspoons of sugar added

Due to my resoults healtwise the rest of my family has gone 100% carnivore and several of my friends has gone over to eating a heavily animal based diet with incredible resoults on their health. The other factors to take into account are our changing dietary needs at different life stages and activity levels. Beyond that, we have different genetic profiles and what suits one may not suit another. A general rule though is avoid highly processed foods and additives and reduce salt and sugar. Eat organic foods as much as possible and don't eat a heavy meal close to bedtime. Also.......make sure you eat quality oils and that your vit D levels are adequate.

What is a nutritarian diet?
@greensmoothieparty
@greensmoothieparty 3 месяца назад
@@jvallas A nutritarian diet style can be vegan or non-vegan. This eating style focuses on the nutrient-rich foods that unleash the body’s tremendous ability to heal, achieve optimal weight, and slow the aging process. Eat mostly plants means only eat animal products in small amounts, if any, such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. Whole food describes natural foods that are not heavily processed. Basically, the majority of our diet is made up of fresh and clean produce rather than food that comes out of a package. No S.O.S. (avoid added salt, oil, sugar). When we eat the whole nut over just the processed oil, we are eating the fiber and protective nutrients too! G-BOMBS is an acronym for Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries and Seeds. These are the most health-promoting, anti-cancer superfoods on the planet. Make sure that you include some or all of them in your diet every day. > Greens: Greater consumption of these vegetables is linked to reduced risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, and a longer life. > Beans: Beans and legumes are rich in fiber and resistant starch, which help keep blood glucose, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol down, and nourish the microbiome. > Onions: Onions and garlic are linked to a reduction in the risk of several cancers, and their distinctive sulfur-containing phytochemicals have a number of actions that benefit the cardiovascular system. > Mushrooms: Mushroom phytochemicals are unique in their promotion of immune system function with powerful anti-cancer benefits. > Berries: Berry phytochemicals have anti-cancer and blood pressure-lowering effects, and are linked to a reduced risk of heart attack. > Seeds: Eating raw seeds and nuts regularly is associated with longevity, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, common cancers, and a healthy body weight. To reverse aging, one has to do what Matt Damon did to survive in the movie "The Martian" when he said "I am going to have to science the sh*t out of this." Check out the channel Conquer Aging or Die Trying to see a researcher who is trying out different interventions on himself and tracking his biomarkers over many years using statistical analysis of his bloodwork and diet. Plants also contain little or no carnitine, saturated fat, creatine, taurine, glutathione, and are practically devoid of omega 3s. The omega 3 fatty acid in plants alpha linolenic is very poorly converted to DHA hence it's mandated addition to baby formulas. In fact, perhaps 50% of the human population converts only a small fraction to DHA. i suspect that these long lived vegans supplemented tgeir diets and probably ate fish regularly. New research also shows that protein requirements inc with age. And if you intend to eat 1.8g/Kg to maintain muscle mass later in life you won't want to consume all of that in the form of soy.

@@alfredadrianjr.4702 You know a lot of anti-vegan talking points. I know the rebuttals. * B12 is not a dietary nutrient. It comes from bacteria, which is found everywhere(except when it's killed. That's the only reason meat has B12. B12 comes from bacteria, which is found everywhere. The problem lies with eating things that kill off bacteria: anti-biotics and other medicines, pesticides, alcohol, garlic, onions, vinegar, and other poisons. This is why meat-eaters also get B12 deficiency. As for the other things absent from plants, But they are found in animals. Well, Humans are animals. If animals had to eat animals to exist, how would animal life begin? Plants were here first, and were needed to be for animals to enter. All animal substance came from somewhere else but in a different form. We are chemical factories and make all those other things. When humans eat other animals it's just the cannibalisation of it's own kind(another animal). It's not needed. That's why science has stated veganism is fine. But I want to address omega 3s. You said they are practically devoid of omega 3s. That's flat wrong. Every plant food has them. And there's no minimum set by scientists. And again, where do cows get all that omega 3? They make it from their plant diet. So do we. And you said "The omega 3 fatty acid in plants alpha linolenic is very poorly converted to DHA" This is more common twisting from anti-vegans. Why would that even be true as humans are primates designed for a low-fat frugivore diet? Dr. Ancel Keys was the one who linked fat with ill health by cherry picking his data. Since then, experts linked dietary fat as the worse thing to eat despite the fact that humans had been eating fat for thousands of years. Sugar is linked to the epidemic of obesity and diabetes. And even studies have correlate the rise of sugar consumption over the decades to poor health and obesity, and it sky rocketed after the invention of high fructose corn syrup. For those out there who might dread a vegetarian or more plant based diet, I really have one thing to say.. That food is yummy if you do it right, and you can eat immense quantities of it. If you like eating, there's no better diet than a plant heavy diet. You don't need to remove meat fully, just add a LOT of greens. The dinners I eat as a vegan are ginormous compared to what I'd get in a meat based meal of the same caloric count. Your digestive system will also love you bigtime for more plants and fiberous foods. Especially if you're in your 30s-40s and your digestion is slowing down a bit. Adding a lot of fiber is a real treat for the body. If you crave the meat, eat the meat. But on days you don't crave meat, eat something else. Falafel or vegan tacos or stuff like that is great. Love it so much. The amount of vegan tacos you can eat before hitting a full dinner's worth of calories is kinda nuts.
@GrThDo
@GrThDo 3 месяца назад
This is definitely a stumbling block for a lot of newbie vegetarians. Plants are pretty low calorie, so you really have to eat a lot more of them than you might expect to meet your caloric needs. A burger and fries might do you as a meat-eater since burgers now are like 30-60% fat, but you might need to be eating twice as much or more as mushroom or grilled vegetable sandwiches to get the same caloric intake. Of course, depending on how much oil and stuff you're adding. A lot of people who claim to have "meat hunger" when they don't eat it simply are not eating ENOUGH when they go vegetarian.

Most important is eliminating processed sugar and processed foods. Outside of that, this doctor is stuck in the past from what he learned when he went to school. I just switched to the meat and fruit diet, with low sugar fruits not all fruit like some are doing. If he is referencing a thousand years as evidence for. Then I feel confident in promoting 250 000 years of ancestral eating patterns. Take a look at the morbidly obese folks doing the carnivore diet with almost all red meat. You would think they would be dropping like flies. And yet we see instead people losing up to 200 plus pounds in a year eliminating all sorts of health problems, skin conditions, depression, type two diabetes. Phenomenal before and after blood spectrums. What about the defensive chemicals in plants and vegetables. After three days I lost all inflammation and all ibs symptoms and have only gotten better in an array of areas. Not to mention it's all about being able to stick to a diet or lifestyle. 84% of vegans quit. Any diet that allows bread products is doomed to fail. Slow results and eventually you will over indulge. Mediterranean is fine as long as you can eliminate foods you may be sensitive to. Starting off carnivore and then introducing 1 food at a time makes a lot of sense to gage your reaction.

For instance, we don’t need to eat the flesh or fluids of animals at all. We absolutely have every possible nutrient source through Plants exclusively and this great doctor speaks of planetary health because what good is it to have our body healthy if the body of this planet we’re living on is being utterly destroyed by our desire to eat the flesh and fluids of animals when it’s completely unnecessary? I heard you to be very complete on the subject and consider the health of our planet and even our own emotional and ethical health as we engage in such extensive suffering, torture, he responsible use of resources, and supporting industry that destroys our planet more than any other; animal agriculture. This is very important and I’m hopeful that you will continue to do more work around this, especially when the IPCC has stated many times that there are a just a few years left for us to drastically change our habits, or they will be irreversible consequences to our environment. Vegans regularly have lowest rates of all cause mortality in large cohort studies such as Adventist Study II and Nurses Cohort Study, among several others. But a whole food vegan diet is not considered the “best” by mainstream media due to inconvenience and audience upset. “Veganism” still seems too “extreme” by a large portion of the population. Mediterranean diet regularly scores highest compared to several diets (DASH, American Heart Association diet, American Diabetic Association diet, and standard American diet) but when compared to whole food plant based, typically scores slightly lower or equal to. Well, I have to say something. As someone whose background is in science, struggling with weight, the problem that I found was what exactly is a ""Mediterranean" diet, and what is being constituted as the healthy one, since there are huge discrepancies based on which Mediterranean region is being referred. Mediterranean region is a very diverse and large space, and any generalities when it comes to how people eat is more based on what we might be told (antidotal evidence), that doesn't take into account many factors: including genetic agreement with our bodies that may well not digest the food in question or even be predisposed to eating in that fashion. I agree that when I looked into "the original Mediterranean diet", I was faced with a lot of regional factors that led me to understand "there is no one diet that is profoundly Mediterranean." A lot of the changes in the diet was based on regions, temperature of the area, availability of food, what was ceremonial eating, (based on holidays) and of course, general ease of food (whether it is processed or not, and age of subjects in this case matters what is in style). Further with climate changes happening worldwide is going to impact whether a fish forward diet is available, ( issues of pollution and heavy metals in the food chain), etc. There are many many factors when determining what a mediterranean diet is, and how to apply it to folks not in the Mediterranean area or cultural agreement. Lastly, meat or no meat, consumption is high in the area or not, again, based on what their foundational food is? If it's wheat, then in the US we have to be concerned with heavily loaded grains with glyphosate and other chemicals that are banned in Europe. No it is not that simple.

@@ceresmary206 Why did you delete your last comment? You are putting way to much weight on this issue in my opinion. Yeah, seems like one has to make their own decision on what the Mediteranean diet is, or just decide what information source you want to believe. I think the guidelines say how to eat, more than what to eat. Personally, I don't think there is one best way to eat, there are more lifestyle issues, and what not to eat - which is just about anything found in American supermarkets anymore - except just raw food. They say avoid red meat, but I like red meat, and when I eat it always buy or try to buy organic and very lean meat ... like 7% fat hamburger is I eat ground beef, or tenderloin beef/fillet mignon if I want steak. I just eat small portions too. I try to stay away from junk and processed foods, but sometimes I eat cookies or chips or ice cream which I always regret.

You don't know much about crop farming, do you? It's devastating to the environment and native animal life. Vast areas of land are cleared to make room for mono-culture crops, which kills or displaces most of the native fauna. Pesticides and herbicides are used (and yes, in organic farming, too) which contaminates the soil, air, and water. Soil erosion silts up waterways, resulting in toxic algal blooms, and Oxygen deprivation, which kills fish and other aquatic life. I can go on, because there is a LOT more that people are oblivious to, but just this little bit of info can be too much for some people to handle. Hopefully, maybe it's enough to open some eyes to reality.

I grew up in the '60s, and can say the same. Those were the days when you could throw a dinner party and not have to ask whether attendees were vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc. You just cooked the food, everyone ate it, end of story.

My daily diet basically consists of approximately, a pound of grass-fed / finished beef, five-six organic eggs, three cups whole full fat milk, 1/4 pound butter, 1-2cups organic Greek yogurt, some cheese, one banana, coffee, natural spring water, coconut oil and I supplement creatine and colostrum. No vegetables, no seed oils, no fibre, no sugar, almost no fruit, no grains, nuts, seeds or processed foods, of course and no medications. Going on 4yrs and at 56yrs old I look like a Greek sculpture…not even kidding, I look chiselled out of stone. Not bragging just simply stating a fact. I think I’m going to stick with what I’ve been doing and to hell with any possible apotheosized negative effects. I’d rather live stronger than longer however, I really don’t think you can have one without the other so stronger is longer. Time will tell.

Firstly: what's in your basket in the store? Are these recognizable things? Apple, nuts. Cut processed food at the root. Also: food is made for olive oil. If one experiences a lot of allergies and colds: try reducing gluten significantly for some weeks. It can interfere with immune responses. If it does, it clears up more. Don't bake and cook stuff to a pulp. Taste is a habit. The taste buds are over-exited. Too much salt. Scale down: you'll get used to it. It is difficult to change your ways. I felt lost in grocery stores after making conscious choices. One has to bite through. Serious food is a bit more rough.

Lol. If you think that eliminating gluten is going to stop someone from 'experiencing allergies', you've lost the plot. Allergies are IgE mediated (due to the presence of antibodies which cause histamine-releasing cascades when they complement/bind with relevant antigens). No amount or lack of gluten is going to get rid of these antibodies from your body. There a plenty of reasons why some people feel better when they stop eating gluten. Placebo is probably number one, but also (as one example) cutting out significant amounts of starch as a secondary consequence probably helps many people stop overeating junk. Tying dietary changes to health outcomes definitively is *very* difficult, and 95% of the time people think they've identified some connection from personal experience, it was just coincidental timing (the other 5% are legitimate allergic reactions, not the 'sensitivities' a naturopath 'tests' you for).

Yes, we will get used it. Our taste buds give us positive feedback when we eat salt or sugars, leading us in the modern western world to overindulge in them. Cutting back on them can be done all at once or gradually. The all at once approach means that suddenly foods taste very different and so this approach is hard to sustain. The gradual approach gives our taste buds times to adjust and we get positive feedback that we're making a positive change, so this approach works better.

@@helpfulcommenter Some people react differently to substances than others. I completely suppressed my disruptive allergies and live a different life. Allergic for grass: eat no grass. The ingredient f's you up in different ways. It creates craving. The food industry uses this fact. So there is even an incentive to propagandize against a critical look at it. Money. You are naive. You are triggered, comrade.

Great video on diet, David. I wish you would do more of these. Have you given much thought about how much one would need to make in income a year to sustain consistently, day in and day out, a planetary health diet or a Mediterranean diet? Yogurt isn't cheap, and neither is fish.
