I totally understand what it is to feel one's gonna lose a part of oneself when closing social networks. I had my first Facebook account set up when I was 12 and closed it back when I was 23... Well, I closed that along with other 20 something social networks and apps that were of no use for me but I had open once in my life when I was cronically online lol. Before that I had been flirting with the idea of closing them by deactivating them for long periods of time but it took me a while to just shut them down completely. One day I was just soooo done with social networks that I shut everything down (after downloading my data, specially pictures) and I just left everything else behind... Online friends, memories of the things I used to do when growing up and becoming an adult, ugh, it's horrible how sentimental we humans are and how big tech companies take advantage of that. There's a bigger world out there and these companies want us to believe that our identity relies on the memories we keep in their websites and apps. Mnah, my memories are mine and I decide what to do with them. Nice video, by the way! (:

There's a very interessting cycle-dynamic between social media content triggering dopamine for humans which creates user retention which in turn gives rewards to the reinforcement learning algorithms on the social media platforms. It's a cycle between carbon neural networks and silica neural networks :)

I noticed this when I was at a restaurant about a decade ago and the entire family was socializing but the one tween had headphones watching an iPad. I vowed not to let that happen to my kid. These companies are problematic but parents also need to help their children wean off and realize the world outside of the screen. Just like with everything else kids learn, they have to learn how to be of and interact with the world. I’m happy so many young people I’ve spoken to have recognized the issue and are actively fighting against it. :)

I'm just hoping whatever crazy AI assistant device that replaces the smart phone encourages in person interaction instead of doomscrolling. I think its possible. The problem at its root is not necessarily dopamine and addiction but rather, dopamine and addiction designed just to exploit you. I've been addicted to games before, but being addicted to a physical media game made before the Switch, you just play it cause you love it and it's comforting. But modern games they make you addicted so you spend more and more money continuously. Its the same with social media. The problem is just the constant negativity social media breeds, and getting addicted to something negative like doomscrolling is the worst

@@tonioinverness OP is probably in the same kind of half boat I'm in. Other first class social media sites just don't click for me and that is partially because of boredom and other part willful intent to not get addicted to the worst of it. RU-vid is interesting because of the interesting creators the exist on here. Sure I'll get distracted by some garbage time to time but it generally doesn't last long. Certainly can't be worse than broadcast TV with the Fox News clones making crap to get angry over and shit tonne of advertising. I wonder who had it worse overall, us or the TV generation?

There is definitely an aspect of the problem that can be solved politically. Similar to addictive substances, addictive tech products can and should be held to certain standards. Some ideas: - the developer assumes liability for mental health problems unless they can show they followed certain product safety guidelines, similar to how dangers of physical products are treated. - just outlawing certain drivers of addiction. Belgium bans everything that looks like gambling, even if real money isn't involved. - Mandating interoperability to bust network effects, like the EU's Digital Services Act does. - Setting a higher minimum age limit for dangerous and addictive digital products, like we do for other drugs. - Making healthy ways to spend your time better and cheaper. Playing sports, visiting friends, and so on. - Schools can ban phones so students have at least a few addiction-free hours per day. We should not pretend that addiction is a problem that only the individual is responsible for. Addiction happens in a certain reward environment that is determined by policy.

I agree with most of the points made on the video but I have to disagree with the statement at the end regarding government involvement. Leaving this addiction problem to be solved and managed by the consumer/user alone seems quite irresposible, these companies are not just selling a product, they are manipulating people. The methods they use to hook you up are intentionally designed to do it. In an ideal world (I know we aren't in one) the government should be resposible of taking care of people and should investigate any company (and potentially punish them) if they are manipulating people (and making their lives worse) for profit. I know the world is complicated and the government does not act the way it should, but profit should never be more important than people's well being.

Exactly why the EU is stepping in. Not by stopping us from using the apps but by making requirements like having a time line based on time instead of algorithm. Still sad that companies have to be forced to include controls for their end users to use their app responsibly

Could you maybe explain how these companies make money from people just being on the platform? I don't understand what they're making money off of. Do advertisers pay them per user hour? Like why would that be the way it's done?

Advertisers pay per impression, something like $0.003 per ad ($3 CPM). How many ads do you see in an hour in social media?

Was never on Facebook or TikTok. Instagram I dislike. Main reason being it seems to absolutely disregard what you are personally interested in and simply serves you what works with most people most of the time. Though it's a very accessible platform to present visual work. I get why the aggregate of people click with this type of content, but it simply is absolutely not my cup of tea. RU-vid, Pinterest and Soundcloud actually give you more of what you want. Could never get used to Spotify. Probably got more skills out of RU-vid by a long shot than multiple college degrees. Video games are somewhat long gone with friends having kids now. Aside from the game as a shared activity, voice chat is more important to catch up on things going on in peoples lives. Should execute more on the things learned, I guess is where I would have to improve. There is something to be said about getting the best products and services and still obviously having to own your part of the equation in terms of moderating their use.

I disagree with regulation not being an answer. You are an above average IQ grown up person who may or may not be able make a change in your social media habits, but what about kids? What about all the people who grew into this stuff and never question it? In most countries it is forbidden to sell humans as a commodity. I think the same should go for human attention.

Honestly, the ending disappointed me a bit. You almost made a very solid critique of capitalism, then made a 180 degree turn to "we individually have to change our mindset". We are not going to evade the destructive laws of capitalism by changing our mindsets. We actually have to overcome capitalism and move to a democratically planned economy (socialism).

I agree there should be laws against manipulative and exploitative systems. That however is different from a centrally planned economy, that idea IS pathetically bad and proven to not work.
