I decided to finally take a look inside the Thomas Kinkade Disney Dreams Collection adult coloring book that so many people have been recommending - but things didn’t quite go to plan.
In this video, I’ll take you through my creative process and ALL the challenges I experienced in trying to recreate Thomas Kinkade’s style with colored pencils and markers.

Honestly, instead of using white india ink(which repels most other ink,) I would of used white gesso. In a thin enough layer it would still show the lines while still being able to cover them up with pencil and ink.

White gouache could also work under pencils, but not under waterbased pens of course, unless it's acrylic gouache

I would have also used white gesso to tone down the black lines instead of paint or ink, and maybe clear gesso will still manage to rescue this page ... if nothing else, it will give the paper some tooth for the pencils to (maybe) work their magic ........ at this point, with 2 layers of hairspray over top, it might not even warp the paper LOL

Just have to say that I actually think that the white ink "mistake" actually adds to the painting, especially around the tiles. It makes the background interesting to look at, and at the same time making the characters stand out. I actually like the final result! But I do understand your frustration with the supplies not working properly over it!! :) However, I'm not sure if I can accept your apology for using my favorite movie as a test paper ;)

Thomas Edison made so many mistakes inventing the light bulb. He said they weren't mistakes, he just found 10,000 ways NOT to make a lightbulb. He only needed to find one that worked. Thank you for illuminating some of the ways NOT to colour a page! Oh, and someone has already tested several things to whiten lines..CMW? Worth checking. Great work! Love the video.

Actually yes and no. Thomas Edison improved/patented the light bulb through experimentation, but he did not invent it. Various forms of lightbulbs already existed 40 years before Edison made them better. I think hairspray now has too many added chemicals. Years and years ago they use to tell it was ok to use that on your artwork but there was not as many additives. Now I would only choose something that was formulated specifically for colored pencil as that will give tooth back to the paper. But I appreciate your honesty and sharing this with us :)

Sarah, there is SO much value in this video! Thank you so much for sharing it. You teach us it is okay to struggle and feel discouraged and experiment and do our best. We never witness that struggle in others, because nobody posts it. Yes, we talk about it, but you support and make the process okay. Also, your "botched" coloring is phenomenal to my eyes, so your demonstration here also reflects how hard we are on ourselves as artists: super self-critical. @tinybird2413 2 года назад
I would recommend instead of white ink that you use something called watercolor ground or conversely a thin layer of acrylic gesso. These are primers which are designed to prepare your surface for wet mediums. A lot of journalers use it to make normal paper handle wet mediums a little better. The added bonus with something like acrylic gesso is that it can help fade dark lines. I don't entirely recommend using these with alcohol markers though because the stuff can potentially gunk up your nibs but it's great for light washes of watercolor and giving tooth for colored pencils.

What about putting down the white ink (or gouache or whatever you’re using as a line cover) and then doing a layer of matte(workable) fixative before coloring over it? That’s what I’ve been doing and it works pretty well. It has a bonus of adding a tiny bit of extra tooth to the paper for my pencils, which is great in the Posh and create space books with thin paper that has very little to no tooth. Idk how you ended up in my recommended but I have this SAME coloring book! I taped off each page and used watercolor to give it a painterly look. It warps the paper a lot but as long as each brush stroke is deliberate and I don’t muddy it up, it works pretty well and is a lot of fun!

Thanks for uploading anyways! I reckon try some white gesso! It’ll hide the lines and give you some tooth! May need to tape down the page to stop some warping…

Really liked this video! Thank you for sharing! Def relatable. I’ve seen others use colored gel pens for the outlines that cover the black lines well. I haven’t tried it yet but it seemed to work fairly well. Love your channel 🙂

This is a great video! It's opened my mind up to thinking in so many different directions. While this particular coloring book does not interest me at all, what you were trying to do with it has really inspired me. I'm excited to see were it will take me! Thank you.

If you can find it, brush and pencil makes a product called touch-up texture that helps when you can't put more layers of pencil down. That book scares me, so I appreciated the video and will color something in it soon and just go for it.

oh goodness, well you gave it a good try. Yeah I would have transferred it onto better paper, and I don't have a lightbox or a printer so I understand why you wanted to see if the white ink worked. I actually use my laptop screen as a lightbox when I want to transfer artwork or use pencil on the back of the paper to trace the outlines to transfer it. I think it would have been best if they made the outlines like a light gray color so you could use pencils over it to cover it up kinda like grayscale coloring books.

I honestly think that guache would be great for this, especially because you wouldn't have to "fade" the lines since it paints over it

Thank you for sharing some of your „not so succesfully“ tryouts. It really shows, that even some so skillfully and brilliant artist, like you are, does mistakes. In fact, it encourages me to try out something new on myself. Aside from this video, I have an important request: is there any chance to get (buy) the template for the blank color sheets for pencils you‘re using? I really, really would love to recreate them for myself. With best regards and in hope to get an (positive) answer! PS: excuse my english, I‘m no native speaker at all 😉👍

I would suggest white-inking the lines...but then photocopying the image onto a nice sturdy paper to solve the texture issue. You might even be able to skip the inking, and just lighten the image using the settings on the copier. This has worked great for me when I was working on a sketch, or made a mistake in coloring. Or if there's just a detail on the coloring page you don't like, you can white it out and re-draw it. You're the boss!

I appreciate that you demonstrated the issues that can arise using coloring books. I discovered a couple of years ago that colored pencils are impossible to use if you have a smooth surface which can even be caused by multiple layers of the color pencils. I now focus on just using alcohol ink markers with fine tips and using the blending pen. It creates a more realistic appearance. Of course these fantasy books do not require realistic, lol. Sometimes I do add colored pencil for accents on top of the ink, but very limited. FYI - Hairsprays contain up to 50% alcohol, thus your inks ran.

I just found your channel today so I am not sure if you have tried this in the past... but have you ever tried putting a layer of white gesso over your pages? I have used that in the past to cover up my pencil lines before I start a painting (on cardstock) and I can still slightly see the lines through the gesso. It will also create more tooth on your surface for the pencils. Thank you for sharing the ups and downs!

While I don’t have this coloring book, I have The Flower Year, which gives me similar trouble. Every time I color in it I feel like an amateur. I haven’t tossed it. I payed too much for it. So, it will sit on my shelf and when I want some aggravation I’ll bring it out.

Thank you for making mistakes on camera! There are so many times, when comparing my pages to others, that I get really down on myself, and won't even call myself an "artist" I'm just a colorist, or a hobbyist. I'm not elite enough to be an "artist" But to see that others have fails too, and pages that go from the ugly stage to an even uglier stage, is OKAY!
