Nothing stops government from doing that now without self driving cars. Isn't there a model out (non sdc) now that GM or whoever can just disable if you miss a payment? Or police can remotely turn off the engine?

Yeah, but right now we are stuck with the tech we have. Mom's model X cruise control (not FSD) is dependent on Tesla vision, which depends on the Auto-wipers, which are in BETA and have been so for years. After Tesla turned off the radar, she is afraid of using the cruise control since she is getting more phantom braking. I want to live in world where the car can drive automatically, but they need to be safer than a human driver and work all the time!

As a big supporter of driverless cars, I would be strongly opposed to any mandate. We should let people stick with human-driven cars as long as they want, just as we allowed people to stick with landlines as long as they wanted, until they felt comfortable switching to using only cell phones. The cell phones proved themselves to the general public, and I am confident that one day self-driving cars will as well (unlike electric-only vehicles, which some people actually are trying to force on the public).

These things will NOT work in the frozen North in the middle of the winter. Additionally, driving is THE biggest job in North America. Eliminating those jobs is going to have a sever negative impact on workers. AI is not your friend, and never will be.

This is not true. I used to work at an insurance company. This will lower the cost of insurance because there would be less accidents. AI can make decisions faster than humans can. Maybe even over time the tech could remove auto insurance and semi truck insurance reducing the price of our goods.

What this means is that drunk drivers and sleepy drivers can now order a waymo thus reducing nasty car accidents all around thus reducing the price of insurance. Totally different beast from living up north, that's for sure. 6-7 months of snow up here, depending on the year. Got the snow tires. Got the chains. Got the sand bags for our 2wd truck. EVERY motorcycle rider I see is passing people on the berm, driving between lanes, zipping past at 100+ MPH, running lights and/or stop signs. I have ZERO sympathy for any of these 2-wheel road hazards.

What is being showcased today isn't artificial intelligence. What is being shown is advanced computer scripts with limited machine learning. The computer can't think or operate outside its program parameters. Don't fall for their marketing gimmick; it's the same stuff we've had for decades, just more advanced. That being said we shouldn't be taking the operater out of the loop. Companies have been trying to automate trains, the airlines, and even the registers at supermarkets. Every time they pull the automated systems and bring back employees because customers don't feel comfortable with a machine, and nothing they do can change that.

I even have a dumb theory that we are ripe for another dark ages, as we store too much of humanities knowledge on such devices. Just destroy a good chunk of that, and have a lot of experts in said field expire in said catastrophe and we suddenly have 'lost technology' on any number of things.

It's always been the case that new technology has made us richer and indeed, more free. The true threat to humanity has always been ourselves. The true threat is for us to be consumed by fear and paranoia. Just look at the pandemic. If your answer for society requires the restriction of freedom and new ideas, then ask yourself, if thats what you really want

Can the car be driven in a safe way through a pouring rain? How does it handle black ice on a highway. A lot of this country is not city and even the cities have highways. Automated taxis circulating in confined downtown areas in places with mild weather is no proof of concept.

@JD2jr. the combination of all the bad is easily enough to show that these shouldn't be allowed publicly. Meaning no taxis or other like minded venues. If you personally want to buy and use one that's fine but you will take the consequences including if you infringe on someone else. If someone dies because rescue vehicles can't get around one then you are at fault along with the car company for wrongful death suit.

I’m worried that this, along with other advancements in AI, will displace so many people in the job market that they will live without a purpose, collecting universal basic income, which is a fraction of what they made before, leading to staggering income inequality. Working and interacting with people is a vital part of human existence, and is crucial for our mental health and well being. I’m a 27 year old millennial, and I’m not looking forward to how this will play out in my lifetime, and the negative impact it could have on man kind as a whole. Yeah no thanks. The only advancements we need to make going forward are in medicine, entertainment, and food production. Anything else will just lead to a societal decline, with humans becoming more stupid and lazy than they already are.

I haven't been driving as long as you, only about half that time, but I've had a few things like this happen over the years when I was younger. I can't explain how I knew to pause, but I chalk it up to Jesus. It wasn't my time yet.

AI would adapt to your weather and know the weather in real time. 4x4 vehicles would be used. It would work just fine.

@@alexmendez3681 Snowy mountain driving is not a simple matter of 4x4 (in fact, AWD is much better, and winter tires are even more important). Even with all the right gear, there's a ton of intuition and experience involved in avoiding spinouts, managing them, and anticipating unexpected terrain around turns. Frankly, I wouldn't trust anything self-driving around here in the summer, much less the winter. The variables are not so neatly predictable as in cities.

Range Rovers 20 years ago had snow settings that helped non experienced drivers. Combo that old technology with AI learning and real time weather gathering tech, and boom, you'll have a network of cars that can learn extremely quickly. Over time, I would trust that tech more than humans. But I want to hear your logic, what logic are you applying that says you would never trust AI.

@@alexmendez3681 AI could certainly improve aids like traction control, descent control and braking systems, etc., but no amount of sensors can predict what's around a blind turn or what the current condition of that part of the road is. Microclimates, localized sun exposure, drainage patterns, random events (like say treefalls) all require real forethought and early execution that the car will never be able to accurately predict. We can't even get computers to accurately predict the weather on a broad scale, much less on a particular stretch of a particular slope. The character of unpaved roads changes drastically not only over the course of a year but also from year to year. I took one in summer up into the mountains that I had taken just a year or two ago and it was fine with just some minor washboarding then. This year it had massive gouges right after blind turns that many vehicles wouldn't even have the clearance or suspension to manage. In my rig, I had to take my best guess at a viable approach in either direction and thankfully managed. It's one thing to analyze the parts of such terrain that you can see, but often you can only guess at what's behind the parts you can see (I encounter that a lot skiing as well). You have to take your best guess at what you might have to face on the back end of a movement, and I will never trust a computer to make that guess for me. And the less practice people get driving thanks to the self-driving takeover, the less they'll be able to manage those issues too. My fear of total computer control is not the result of an ignorance of or lack of experience with computers. I work on computers, with AI software. I grew up on computers. My experiences with both programmed code and machine learning tell me software will never be all-sufficient to such a complex, life-and-death task. Many of the people pushing the idea seem to be blissfully ignorant of just how broken most technology is. However, systems like e.g. ABS have proven to seriously enhance performance for a human operator, and I'm all for that sort of thing. On the other hand, the more we remove the need for human input in the driving process without freeing them up entirely (a la Tesla), the more impossible it becomes to remain vigilant and ready to take over for FSD when necessary. Human focus simply doesn't work that way; lack of engagement means attention wanders, and there's only so much even the most disciplined person can do to fight that. So that's a chasm that must be jumped rather than bridged, so to speak.

All it takes are different kinds of sensors and cameras to read the road, and computers can read the road anywhere from 60-120 times per second, faster than a human can and react faster than a human can. In fact, in 2023, Tesla vehicles can drive themselves better than humans can, and a lot of the newer car models can brake faster than a human can. Tesla cars on average are 6x less likely to be in an accident and that is just the beginning. that's facts! I am willing to bet you that cars will eventually drive better than you ever will. I'll put money on it. And don't get me wrong, I agree with you when you say the less humans get to practice the worse it'll be for them and that's true, no one is debating that, but unfortunately that isn't a good enough reason to not allow this tech. In the beginning this tech will be used on people with disabilities, people who are too tipsy or sleepy, people that have suspended licenses, it'll help move people around to keep our communities moving. I get it, you are an old boomer that is scared of change which is funny to me because your entire life has been nothing but change. If you're in the back of a driverless vehicle, unless there's an emergency override you can't have any liability or even reaponsibility, less so than if you were in a regular taxi and your driver made a terrible decision.

The real question is who's going to load, check, and attach the trailer? Now that I think about it what do they do if the vehicle needs fuel or has an emergency on the road like a blown out tire? Not to mention how's a driverless car going to assist an invalid in getting in and out of the vehicle? I've seen no answers to these questions and that comes off as a bit of a design flaw to me.

Different frequency and probably a wifi connection between them to since them all up and see what each cars plan is. Amazon does it in miniature with its robots in warehouses that fetch racks. The cars will see each others routes and tell each other who's turn it is to turn or whatever.

It's called "spread spectrum", which is a relatively old and well understood technology. The same technology that allows your Wi-Fi to work in an very crowded Wi-Fi environment. Besides the different frequency the radar/lidar pulse could be dynamically coded if the sensors perceive interference from other vehicles. Besides, the radar/lidar is an interim solution, as software and hardware gets better visual systems will replace those systems, basically working like a human by sight and sound.

I think you mean "evasive" there. As to airplanes, perhaps because there's a shortage of pilots and they are rather expensive to pay? Everything is about money in the end.

Commercial plane auto pilot doesn't do anything more than cruise control. It maintains speed, direction, and altitude. It can't evade a storm, another aircraft, or other hazard. They defenitely can't land or take off. We know it's possible to have pilotless aircraft as the military already uses them. But airlines and air freight companies don't have access to an equivalent technology yet, let alone permission from the government to use it.
