First it's Stuart Wilson in the hot seat - or should that be the garden seat? He's aiming to bump off some marauding corvids over bait from his garden shed. But the pesky crows and magpies are more wily than he gives them credit for...
And in the second part of the show Mat brings you another technical how-to piece. This time, learn how to apply holdover and holdunder to any situation in the field - you'll never miss again.
Don't miss our news special, either, brought to you from IWA in Nuremberg - the shooting industry trade show where all the biggest new product launches happen.

Learned this one from an old farmer; crows are smart, but they can't count. Bring a friend with you next time. Set your bait out. Both of you go into the shed. After a bit, have your friend leave. They think the threat has now left. You are still in position and ready to take them down.

Stuart, get a friend to walk to the shed with you. Wait inside ten mins, let friend leave and crows will assume u have left. This does work. Try one time u never know. It may work for you. Great sport, great shooting.love going against corvid's.

Crows are extremely smart and hard to trick into getting close enough to shoot at.

This is one of the Better Guest Presenter you've had Matt. Glad you don't mind sharing the spotlight... you are still my favorite though... yes all the way from the US of A. Tried hunting Cows myself and they are keen eyed and learn and remember.

what we worked out when we were kids is crows cant count we would walk up to a carrion crows nest three of us the crows would fly off,one of us would hide an the the other 2 would walk off down the field the crows would all ways come back unaware that one was about to meet his maker

I have shot Many many Magpies, get one, leave it, and the rest just flock in.

Soak bread over night in a container top it out tbis way no corvid can take whole slice away as it breaks instantly leave a magpie in a cradle as decoy near break don't shoot any magpies at first as crows will watch magpies first to see it's safe if any crows fail to come in you can then turn on the magpies

Critical statement Mat about practicing your H/O or H/U at various elevations. Since hunters are usually shooting up when going for quarry like squirrels and doves, remember to hold UNDER for these shots. I sounds counterintuitive, but once you start doing that, I guarantee your kill ratios will increase. I practice on pine cones at different elevations and distances using a laser range finder with slope compensation to confirm the figures. I then create a chart to refer to when I am in these situations. Really helpful. ATB, Michael

Personally I'd leave the birds out as decoys, which works well for me; plus they'll be gone in the morning, 'Ol Toby'll see to that.

Great information on the hold over, hold under. I just need to find somewhere with enough flat distance to try the 5 metre targets... my garden is all uphill so hard to zero a scope when you are always shooting an elevated target.

Hi Matt, top video as usual, some very interesting things to come in 2017,some good tips on shooting trajectory, something I have difficulty grasping being relatively new to Airgun shooting, keep up the good work.

Great shooting!!! And patience!! I know what it takes. Friggin crows are so impossible. They always have a sentry posted high. Our old shop had a field behind it. It was 1/8 mile long. I use to shoot crows or ravens from our shop. I would have to get there at first light to catch them. I'm saying,1/8 mile away, when I pulled into our shop at first light, when they saw my truck pull in, they flew away!!! No matter what time of day, if my truck pulled in, they flew away. They reconciled my vehicle 1/8 of a mile away!!! Of course I was using a 25.06 rifle to reach them. This is a true story!! They are sooooo smart!!!

So why not leave them alone? What damage are they doing? Affecting your pheasants etx that you are breeding for game? You are an idiot. Karma will get you.

Well done Stuart, taking any corvid at that range without them spotting you is difficult, and they are very wise knowing if you have snuck into the shed to wait for them. Oh and Matt you done good too.

Great shooting good patience, crows natural enemy is the owl try putting a owl decoy in the open and the crows should be less cautious and try to attack the decoy.cheers Dean

I've always found that a split open rabbit often keeps them there long enough to get a bead on them but they are not easy to shoot that's for sure, very weary birds and you need to keep yourself really concealed but its great sport!!!
@theshootingshow

They certainly are a tricky quarry, Trevor. I reckon Stuart has done a pretty good job bagging two corvids for the camera. The rabbit bait is a good one - it's a method I often use myself. All the best. Mat

Buy yourself a fake crow on a stick and set it right by the bread. Other crows will start to land close by. Proceed to shoot.

Bit too much chat / little action on this one, but credit to Stuart for getting the two Corvids in the end. I'm really glad you've replaced the laughable faux-croaky voiceover dude for the show coverage, since these older videos.

space hopper, if you want to learn, you need to listen to the spoken word....... you can only hear speaking when there is talking....... So just pay attention carefully. The vid is just great and Mat is a great airgun hunter
@billredding2000

Maybe some of us already know those things? WAY too much talk and too little action...this has got to be the worst "airgun pest control" channel on RU-vid due to all the babbling on and on. Just SHUT UP and SHOOT...even the birds are bored to death. -- BR.
