Grey squirrels are causing serious damage on one of Mat Manning’s shoots by destroying trees and preying on native wildlife. Mat has been using a feeding station to bring the offending rodents to book but they’re starting to get wary. We join him on a challenging hunt as his sets his sights on the remaining bushy-tails.
We’ve got the Walther Rotex RM8 Ultra Compact from Umarex on the bench this week. The original RM8 is an awesome airgun, so tune in to see how the new carbine version of the recoilless PCP shapes up.

Yet again a cracking video Matt. I would also like to commend you on the way you explained the reason for controlling these pests. We don't just do this for fun as the antis would like to think, and although it is good sport for us shooters there really is a valid reason for doing what we do! Keep em coming Matt!

What a pity they don't do a LH stock or an ambidextrous stock for this little rifle. As a left hander it precludes owning the gun. :o(

I prefer my 2 original rm8's. I have 1 wood in .22 and 1 varmit in .177 both have the manual safety , just seems a faft having to keep clicking the safety in all the time

Just ordered my RM8 UC, can’t wait for it to arrive this week, gone for the .177 as think it will be great for target shooting and hunting, it will be my first Pre Charged after having a Hatsan Striker 100X Springer for a few months, just had to upgrade! Can I ask where did you get the metal target holder from Mat? Love the channel. Many thanks

Thanks Matt, but on the Walther RM8 UC is there a real regulator or rather what is called a "regulated valve" ? Also, there is a narrow gap in the rail (above the magazine port), which appears not to be one-piece ! AND Are single shot adaptors available for the Walther to make it fit for HFT ?

Love the new compact but safety switch looks annoying any way off keeping it set to off so you dont have to keep moving hand to turn off after every prime

They strip the bark and line there drays with it into fine fibers if you have ever pulled a dray apart you will see

@@theshootingshow Cheers for that Mat. I was wondering about the comparison with the 10x half mil dot of the Hawke Sidewinder, as that too is quite fine, but not too fine that you can't see it at night.

Seat the pellets properly and that group will be pellet on pellet.

Afraid it's discontinued. QuietWear make a similar one but it's reversible and twice as thick. Let me know if you do find one like mine - I need a new one... Cheers. Mat

If you could learn to talk without waving your hand about, your calming time between shots would be reduced. Just a thought. I know a nice Italian couple whom we challenged to talk without gestures: they couldn’t! Great show! Wish I could afford to emulate you, and frankly envy you a bit.

Well, Mr Ed - my grandmother was Italian so that probably explains it. Don't be too jealous. I'm a very busy journalist who spends long hours at his desk. I'm afraid my cherished shooting trips only account for a small amount of my time. All the best. Mat

If you are too busy to hunt, you are too busy. I am old, and regret greatly not prioritizing properly for all those years, lost time forever. Family and the things that have greater long term benefit. But, I understand making a living all too well, and you do excel at your journalism! My Bohemian mother died in my arms years ago: they must be cherished while we have them! Thanks for considering the maundering of this old man.

it always seems to be a compromise regarding the duty of pest control and the ability of making videos for YT, as you decrease the squirrel population other areas need to be exploited be it other feeder sites for squirrels or other pest species. good episode Mat. regards /simon

Yes, that's right Simon. Nobody who controls grey squirrels in the UK should be thinking about leaving a few for the future, and that does mean that bag sizes will decrease over time. Obviously, that is because it is a very destructive introduced species whereas the control of our native species is more about keeping numbers in check as they do have a role to play in their ecosystems.
