Grey squirrel control is a year-round job, and we join Rich Saunders as he tackles the destructive rodents on a winter foray. Rich makes good use of wait and bait tactics to lure them within range of his Walther RM8 UC air rifle.
Also in this episode, Mat Manning reviews a roundup of targets from The Airgun Target Company. Made in the UK, these awesome targets are super-strong and great fun to shoot.

Congratulations on a great example of how airguns play a vital part in pest control and the broader management of woodland environments. There's a difference between hunting and pest control which few people outside of airgunning understand. Well done.

Hi Rich, Your Walthur RM8 looks like a fantastic air rifle. It isn't half hitting those squirrels with a thump. I like the bolt action, coupled with the air cylinder, it reminds me a little bit of the iconic Theoben Rapid. I have a similar set up- permission like you have there, though mine is a one man hide, using a trigger stick. I struggle to keep warm during the cold winter months. I've tried some magnetic socks, which the jury is still out on! I've also tried some rechargeable hand warmers, which are very good. I didn't want to use lighter fuel as the vapour/smell I thought may give me away. Upto now, the rechargeable ones are great, a real help. The targets Matt's shown us, later in the video, look very good. They look very well made, and good value for money, so they should last a long time and be very useful. I've enjoyed your video, thank you. Cheerio for now, Ian.

Hi Ian. Yes, the RM8 UC is a great rifle, especially at the price. It's a solid and dependable work horse that has never let me down. I must admit, I am partial to a nice bolt action and the one on the UC gets better and better with use. With regards to staying warm in this cold snap, have you tried the heated fleece/gilet? Has heating elements sewn in that connect to a battery. Great invention! See you in a few weeks...

@richsaunders6515 Hi Rich, Thank you for your message. Yes, mate, the heated garments look a great idea, and I'd like to try one. However, I have installed a pacemaker and will have to seek proper medical advice as to whether I can safely wear one. One important and serious issue, Rich, are they run on lithium batteries? Lithium batteries seem to be all the rage right now, the latest thing. However, what we are not told is how dangerous lithium batteries are. They are a huge fire risk and cause of one family losing their lives in the Cheshire area last year, I think it was? An E bike was left in their hall to charge overnight and started a house fire. No one should ever leave lithium batteries charging un attended. They are lethal. Best wishes, Rich, and thank you.

@@ianwoods1384 Hi Ian. Yes, please do seek medical guidance. I am pretty sure the battery on mine is lithium, but I believe most issues occur when people charge their battery using a charger different to the one supplied. Look at it this way - at least you'd be nice and warm!

Mat - I've bought one of the pellet trap target holders feature but I am going to pack the back of mine with old carpet to both silence it and also to save wear on the back sloping plate

Great episode. Good to see the RM8 out and doing the business with Rich. 👏👏👏 Cracking rifle for the money. And I’m definitely buying one of those pellet traps 🪤 They look solid. I shoot in the garden a lot, practicing, and don’t like to have lead dropping everywhere . All of my targets have traps and I think I’ll be adding to them. Finally, the podcast is brilliant chat for us enthusiasts so keep it up. A bit of a simp comment, I know, but we need to support these channels and this one delivers the goods. 👍 👏👏👏

Solid targets and like the fact it's UK based. I would prefer that their silhouettes had targets where the animals 'kill zone' is. Would make for better practise.

I suspect that has more to do with camera microphones. The shot he took out of the hide early on to make the rifle safe seemed quiet enough...
@richsaunders6515
@richsaunders6515 5 месяцев назад
It does come across like that in the video Rich, but the sound is exaggerated by the microphones on the cameras, some of which are very close to the muzzle. I wouldn't say the UC is the quietest rifle I use, but it's not the loudest and more than acceptable for the pest control shooting I do. More importantly, its very accurate and as you say, it hits really hard as well! Thanks for watching.

@reservedone1791
@reservedone1791 5 месяцев назад
Except its a 0db. I expect microphone made it sound louder as the shot out of the hide window was pretty quiet.
@richsaunders6515
@richsaunders6515 5 месяцев назад
Thanks very much. Rifles often sound way louder than they are in reality due to the fact we have often have a microphone close to the rifle. The RM8 UC isn't the quietest rifle I shoot, but it's not the loudest by far and more than acceptable for rat, rabbit and squirrel shooting. Thanks for watching.

I know you've probably got your tongue firmly in cheek Paul! But just for the avoidance of doubt, please don't attempt to shoot squirrels, or any other quarry/pest species with a BB rifle. I know the Daisy 880 can also shoot pellets, but you also need a minimum of 10 ft/lbs. and sufficient accuracy to place a pellet on a fingernail every time. Great for tin cans in the garden though!

Well this came up as a suggestion in my news feed. Why are you killing animals that are living in the wild ? Are they really annoying you that much. Cruel bastards tbh.
@reservedone1791
@reservedone1791 5 месяцев назад
Hello Robin. I'll put your rudeness down to your ignorance. Hopefully this will help you understand and then you'll be less ignorant and therefore less rude: 1) grey squirrels are an invasive species that carry a diseases (squirrel pox) that has almost killed off our native red squirrel. 2) Grey squirrels strip bark from trees and kill trees. The impact of this is two-fold: a. the commercial impact on managed forests and b. the harm caused to woodland habitats that support other species. 3) Grey squirrels predate on songbird eggs and chicks, including many endangered native species. 4) Grey squirrels are able to eat food that is not ripe, thereby denying it to species that rely on the same food when it is ripe when they come out of hibernation. I hope that helps. If not, please feel free to go an be outraged elsewhere.

@@reservedone1791 It doesn't help and I don't like stupid reasons people have for justifying their killing sprees. You are some kind of cruel bastard who sets up traps to lure a squirrel in so you can get pleasure out of pulling the trigger whilst you are hiding in your little hideout.
