So... The song is “Music For Chameleons” by Gary Numan from the album “I, Assassin”, 1982... The magnificent fretless bass player is Pino Palladino... Also known for playing with Paul Young on “Every Time You Go Away” and with Tears for Fears on “Woman In Chains”
How he kept a straight face, unbelievable. This show always leads to me thinking about the writing, he and Iannucci et al, MUST have pissed themselves at the table whilst bringing it all together. Genius.
Despite the saaad and seemingly common misconception, Alan was residing in a 38ft by 12ft Willerby Winchester static home and NOT a caravan, Stop getting static homes wrong! Another one of those at the same time tomorrow.
Coogan captures all perfectly. We ALL used to play this bassline. Perfection. The fart finishes me. Probably the funniest episode of comedy of all time.
Whenever I hear that fretless bass line, I think it’s Japan’s Mick Karn, it sounds so much like him! I wonder if Gary Numan asked Pino Palladino (the actual bassist!) to play like Karn?
True story - I brought a girl home once after a night out, she had never seen the last episode in the series so I popped it on, we indeed got it on and 40 minutes later the DVD menu was there, Alan looping the shit out of my TV for hours on end playing the air bass and neither of us could be bothered turning it off.
