Lex Luger and The British Bulldog formed a short-lived tag team in the WWF known as "The Allied Powers". After Luger's main event singles push had come to an end, the WWF decided to pair him up with Davey Boy Smith to create a new tag team. The Allied Powers are maybe best remembered for their WrestleMania XI opening contest against Jacob & Eli Blu, but that was certainly not the best match Luger and Smith had on WWF PPV.
This video looks at the Allied Powers' entire WWF run.

I was a huge fan of the Allied Powers, & I've always hated that they were kept away from the tag titles & not really given any meaningful matches. Going back & watching their time together, again, I completely understand why Luger jumped ship to WCW. Thanks Wrestling Bios for covering this sadly forgotten tag team.

As the years went by in his tenure with the WWF he was shrinking. I’d say his treatment and lack of Vitamin S lead to Luger jumping back to WCW (where he was one of the top guy there again and also quickly packed back on the muscle mass)
@RyanParreno
@RyanParreno 2 года назад
the way they were used really doesn't make sense here. Lex built a name for himself in the WWF and was also known as a former WCW World Champion. Davey had his star making 1992 Summerslam match with Bret. These guys were big stars, they were money draws. My best guess is Vince didn't see the upside to this teamup in house shows, so just like Flair vs Hogan, Vince trumped conventional wisdom for the evidence he can see with his own eyes. And just like Flair and Hogan, WCW would go on to steal Luger away and realize his potential in ways that WWF didn't know how to

For a thrown together team, they had a top tier mashup entrance theme. Its so weird that they went all in with their presentation and really making them look like a legit team and then have them lose their one televised title shot and then depushed them despite being pretty over. IYH 2 was the first PPV my mom ever let me got, so it had Jeff Jarrett's best WWF match AND the best Allied Powers match. (also probably the best Roadie match lol underrated PPV) It was definitely a huge let down when Owen and Yoko won though,. That double back suplex on Yokozuna definitely was the high spot and seemed like it should have been the end but, NOPE.

I'll never understand how, with the talent they had in the 1990's, WWF couldn't "find something to do" with guys like Luger or Smith. They really should've had Luger beat Yoko at SummerSlam and then set up WM10 around a fight between Bret and Lex, imo. And Davey should never have been away from the upper part of the card. How the hell do you go from Wembley in '92 to "nothing for you rigth now" ?!

Before my first sabbatical I was still watching in 95, not really enjoying much but wrestling is familiar, that's a thing we all like about it. You could see back then there were lulls in it anyway, but the Allied Powers, though cheesy, at least felt like a gimmick that could go somewhere.

Despite not being a huge fan of either guy individually, I really liked the idea of the Allied Powers as a team. Many thrown-together teams look just that - no reason to be together other than 'and then they teamed up.' Lex and Davey, with their similar physiques, patriotic gimmicks and complementary ring-gear, and a banger of a mash-up theme with glorious pyro, made total sense as soon as you saw them together. And the cross-Atlantic Babyface potential was huge! They really shoulda been tag champs. I love Owen Hart, but he and Yoko were the very image of a thrown-together team. Really their run as champs shoulda been short term, to build to an Allied Powers win. Owen shoulda been put in the Intercontinental picture, had him be the guy to feud with Shawn over the IC belt instead of Shane Douglas (and been allowed to have a proper run with the strap, unlike Douglas.)

Nobody had any idea at the time, but I saw Lex's last ever WWF match live at a house show in Saint John, NB, Canada. He wasn't even originally scheduled to take part. He replaced Diesel in the main event, teaming up with HBK vs. Owen and Yoko. They won by count-out or DQ and of course did that silly thing where they celebrate with the belts afterwards to send the fans home happy (There was no favortism towards the Canadian Owen vs. the Americans at this point). Luger would know as well as anyone that's not how title changes work 🤦‍♂️.
