I used to have one of those. They were an excellent baler . Unfortunately for me there was no where to get parts for it in Nova Scotia. So I switched to a New Holland which was alright but no where near as good as the Allis Chalmers baler.
I always was curious about the connection with the Jones Baler in the UK. Was it an Allis built unit or was the Allis unit originally a Jones Machine that Allis Bought to get a baler line to add to the Allis line? I always thought the latter.
Martin, I did a bit more looking, and yes, Allis Chalmers bought out the Jones co and marketed that baler line under their own brand. There's a interview of a former Jones Co employee and he gives a good account of the co and he comments on the Allis take over. There were a few of those Allis / Jones balers in my area here and they were good for the most part. One guy had trouble but it was more a service man issue, once the thing was sorted out it gave good results.@@martingardener90
@@frankwurth5375 I found that interview but haven't watched it yet. There is an Allis baler for sale here in N. Ireland but no price so I'm nearly affraid to call, when people don't put a price it usually means they are looking stupid money! As you say it would be interesting to know if the Jones built was an Allis design and if so was it much the same as the balers built in the US, the model numbers seem to be very different.
More similar to the Ford 532 and 542 made by New Idea under contract for Ford and sold under Ford's Name. I say this because those balers had a plunger catch to protect the needles similar to the allis balers. The 530 was made by long under contract for Ford but lacked a plunger catch to protect the needles.
