I've read this theory somewhere: Kinger has been trapped the longest because he was a Developer, and his obsession for an "insect collection" is because he got trapped while looking for bugs in the game. I personally think that Jax antagonistic attitude, the fact that he has "keys to everyone's room" and his extra knowledge is because he was some sort of hacker before being trapped

This!! One of the things that crossed my mind was how Jax having "unauthorized" access to everyone's rooms is much like a hacker having unauthorized access to different parts of a network. Plus, Jax's name (either coincidentally or intentionally) rhymes with "hax", a slang term that refers to cheating in a video game by either using external tools or "hacking" the game to gain an unfair advantage. In this case, Jax has unfair access to the living quarters, whereas everybody else is limited to only being able to freely access *_THEIR_* designated room.

I noticed something: When Jax asked him snarkily when was he "an expert on the Digital World", Kinger replied to him confused "The expert on the _what_ ?" He forgot this isn't in the real world. Majority of them are in their 20's, (Ragatha's 30.) But Kinger's almost 50. Which means they all may've "been stuck here for years", he might've been in the circus for a few DECADES.

Jax did not teleport, he just ran away really fast and left a dust cloud (like in old loony toons cartoons). And I am a bit shocked that Matpat, as a theater kid, did not see the Comedy and Tragedy masks of Gangle and that depictions of the two masks are often drawn with a red ribbon wrapped around them.

That's one of my favorite things about Gangle so far. She's upset about the Comedy mask being broken because she literally can't convey any feelings other than tragedy. It makes that little squeak that she made when Jax stepped on it just a little more sad.

Something I find very interesting too is how Jax is the only one to directly break the fourth wall, looking at the audience saying "She still thinks this is a dream". After he says that the screen zooms out and you see Ragatha very confusedly ask "Why are you looking at me like that?" (Directed at Jax, cause of him staring into the screen)

I know it very well. In my country Colombia, these types of escalators in shopping centers have a list of warnings about having shoes with laces that stick out, accompany minors when they go up the escalators, be in the central part, not on the sides, etc.

Took me embarrassingly long to realize that Cane took their request for an "exit door" to mean they wanted "a door that has the word 'EXIT' on it, like one would find in an office building", INSTEAD of what they actually meant: a way to get back to the real world, hence why he had such troubles figuring out what to put on the other side of the door

Pretty sure he knows they want TOO exit and what that entails. But he can't DO it for them. Which is why he's trying to figure out a good way to utilize the exit door. But because he doesn't know how real life is specifically. It's just basic office assets

Wouldn't the phrasing that she "put on some weird headset" imply that the headset isn't hers? Maybe she (and the others) are just game testers. I also read others saying that Kinger mentioning an "insect collection" could be a reference to computer/software "bugs"

My theory is that Pomni just found this old, retro video game and computer + headset stored away in the office-like building and put the headset on to see what the game was like and was then physically transported into the video game world. Basically exactly like what happens in the second Jumanji movie, except she also loses her memories.

My theory around Jax is that he's collecting keys because he's trying to escape. He's hoping one of the keys will get him out. As for knowing her biggest fear. I think it's a reach that he's higher power in this world. Most likely she just told him somewhere down the line. I think the line was a throw away to give off the friendship vibe. That they have been there so long that he knows things about her that only friends would know. We can also probably deduce that Jax came here before Ragatha. So maybe he talked to her to calm her down and somehow they talked about fears

And as for the C&A. In real life it's a clothing company. Don't know if it's just a random company for if they meant for that to be the company it is. But it's a fast fashion brand. Maybe pomni's human self in the real world worked for the finance side of the company

Important thing to note for potential theories, Gooseworx, the creator, confirmed that Caine isn’t actually evil. He’s an AI program that doesn’t fully understand humans. Presumably, he does actually want to make them happy by creating these adventures to ensure they don’t go insane, and even creating an “exit” like they’ve been asking for, although he probably doesn’t even know how to let them actually leave. Also, it’s been stated multiple times outside the show that these characters indeed were humans.

Caine isn't evil and specifically seems to be only interested in "taking care" of the humans who show up in his realm, which for me very much implies an unseen third party is pulling the strings behind the scenes to trap people here.

Interesting! I didn't know that about Caine but it makes sense. I figured he was the dev for the game they are trapped in but somehow retained his memory of that it is a game? That doesn't make a ton of sense but him being AI, being the only actual part of the game (not human) makes sense. Like, how he's able to fix Ragatha's glitch after being attacked by Kofmo.

I'm guessing since Caine made the exit and he's not a human, he probably doesn't know what the real world looks like. Which might mean he doesn't know what to put on the other side of the exit which is why it just leads out into the void. Just a thought

Have you noticed how the abstracted characters are characters who are similar to the current cast? maybe, whenever a character is abstracted, the character design is used as a way to "remake" that cast member in particular. It might be in the form of a clown, chess piece, ribbon mask, doll, anthropomorphic humanoid, and a miscellaneous character in terms of zooble.

Personally, I'm pretty sure the reason Jax has "powers" isn't because he's an administrator or anything, but because he's leaning into the world he's trapped in. They're very obviously stuck in a very cartoony game, where someone running away so fast they leave a them-shaped cloud of smoke behind makes sense. It works because it's funny. But the only ones who are actually adjusted to the world enough to make use of that are Jax and Kinger.

Hey Matpat, just thought I'd point out that Jax looks at the viewer at 30:08. Ragatha says hes looking at her and then his eyes move over to her as he makes the comment about wanting to see funny things. I think he might be the background AI archtype like AM from "I have no Mouth and I Must Scream". He knows more about what's going on then he leads on, he actively wants to watch people get hurt because it amuses him, and he seems to be aware of the "player" or "viewer" as the episode is going on.

An important thing to note about Kinger and Queenie - the King in chess is a relatively weak piece, despite his obvious importance to the game. I wonder is his “insanity” is partly caused by the fact his Queen piece is gone. The Queen is the strongest piece in the game and is there to protect the King. Without her, the King can do very little to protect himself.

I believe that kingler was to replace queenler. But what if his wife came to this world as queenler and he couldn't get her out and tried to but decided to put on a the headset to see if there was a way to help her. But ended up replacing her as kingler instead? Same with the pink dog on the door. That one must've abstracted this jaz the bunny came in as replacement.

Personally I think Caine really did try making an exit but his ai mind couldn’t actually comprehend what would be behind. Imagine controlling a world like this and a human ask to leave. It’s not very easy to imagine a world that you’ve never been to. Caine is a definite favorite.

yeah, and I'm thinking he simply can't kick people out of the game. I know it's early to tell, but I'm thinking he's built specifically to "help" the player, which is why he's so nice and helpful, but the game was made as a trap, so it's outside his designated control to let players out of the game. Which just sucks for him really. He wants to help the "players", that's his entire purpose, but the one thing they need and want, he doesn't actually have the power to give. idk, he just gives me the vibe of someone who's doing a lot of nice things out of a panicked guilt.

I heard a theory abt linger being creator, blah blah blah queener was his girlfriend, 2 ppl we saw that were crossed of went in first , kinger tried to create exit, was stopped halfway and put into game so Caine wanted to make a fake exit to give them hope, but he didn’t have any reference BESIDES kingers unfinished one, so Caine didn’t know what else to do.

I find the biblical references @Matpat pointed out very interesting and I would like to add a little more. When Matpat pointed out that Pomni’s hand was healed immediately after interacting with Caine (1:19:58) I realised this situation has some similar parallels to a story in the bible where a sickly woman who touched Jesus’s robe and was immediately healed. This could just be a coincidence but with all of the biblical references Matpat pointed out I just wanted to put it on the table.

In the hallway, when you see all of the previous characters that have presumably been abstracted, you can see how they all look like variations of a similar character or a base model. It almost reminds me of games where you can chose a base model and then can chose from like 3 different shirts & hair styles and change the colors. Then, inevitably, most of the characters end up looking pretty similar. It also reminds me of games where in a group, you can only have one of each type of character. Maybe this is why as soon as Kaufmo the clown abstracted, another clown adjacent character (Pomni the jester) joined the game, and she looks similar to another jester/clown character we can see on a door in the hallway?

Caine isn't as evil as everyone is thinking, imo. he's doing his best to keep his characters sane with the adventures, and I don't think he quite understands what they mean by "exit" or why they'd want to leave. When he's talking about the exit, he says he knows everyone's been wanting one, but he didn't know what to put on the other side, which shows he might not truly understand that they're trying to leave the circus entirely. he heard them talking about an exit, and did his best to make one. I don't think he's as bad as we're being led onto believe.

Yeah, he seems to think the outside is something he has to build himself. He probably knows nothing about the outside world apart from the C&A offices since that's all he could replicate.

Gives off alien trying to understand human wants and desires but because they are not human, they cannot fully grasp the reason. At first I thought Caine was human but this does make me feel like he is an NPC, AI, or even once human but now doesn't understand humans anymore kinda like SAO I think 3rd season where babies' minds were put into a a machine cuz they don't initially freak out and shut down from the stress of not being a real person when they recalled being alive before.

Yea I think Caine literally has no clue what is happening outside of the program, as he is likely an AI (like an actual AI not a learning algorithm) and if no one remembers stuff about their life beyond once being a human, he has no frame of mind for what exists outside of the circus.

For those curious: The teapot at the beginning is most likely a reference to the Utah teapot, one of the first 3D art objects created. There's a bit of history and urban legends behind it, but usually when it's included, it's just a small reference to the early days of 3D art and rendering.

This also reminds me of the "Teapot hypothesis", which is the hypothesis where there's a teapot in orbit around the sun. The point of this concept is that there's no way to disprove it, because the teapot is too small to observe with present-day telescopes, and so the 'burden of proof' should always lie with the person who proposed the hypothesis in the first place.

I grew up with my mom telling me that a daughter of someone she knew got her shoe caught at the top of the escalator, fell backwards, and got horribly injured and scraped up by the machine. A story which was prompted by my pink croc temporarily getting caught at the beginning of an escalator. So now as an adult, I do have a slight paranoia around escalators and hesitate while getting on/off them 🙃

I love that the break in Pomni's psyche is so animated when we are introduced to the rancid computer set up, maybe showing us again that all she remembers is putting that headset on (presumably) and now as she's running to find a way out, she's faced with her goal (taking off the headset) and she's still trapped. Thinking about the experience Pomni has in the backroom exit loop in a first person point of view like in a VR headset and not as the third person audience is also kind of extra horrific. Edit at the end: is the 'spoiler' Caine is worried that someone will be spoiled to, is that after The Void is the reality? As AI, I could understand if he operates like a gamemaster, and maybe if there is no escape the break of the fourth wall would literally break the game.

It's worth mentioning that Gooseworx has stated multiple times that Caine is not evil, nor does he mean the other characters any harm. He genuinely wants them to be happy, he's just limited in what he can do as a malfunctioning AI. As for the eye motif, I think Caine does have the ability to see everything in the circus, he just doesn't choose to keep tabs on literally everything at all times. He probably gets distracted easily.

On the topic of color unity with the red and blue, they could be using visual clues to tell us who is more mentally or emotionally stable. To me, it seems that the more mixed the two colors are, the more likely it is that the character in question is fully stable in only one of the two categories. Kinger, for example, may not be mentally stable, but is still emotionally stable, if a bit jumpy. Jax, to me, is not as emotionally stable as he lets on, but is mentally stable. As for the characters whose colors don't mix, I think which color is more prominent might imply which category is worse for one character. Ragatha, for example, has more blue than red. This could indicate that she is more emotionally stable than mentally. Gangle doesn't have any blue on her at all, and it's obvious she's not very emotionally stable. Pomni is equally rocky in both categories, but not completely unstable, and Zooble seems to have more red-skewing colors on them, so they're probably less emotionally stable then their nonchalant attitude implies. You can be fully stable in only one category or partially unstable in one or both and be physically fine, but once you lose yourself and are completely unstable in both, you abstract and transform into the glitchy monster.

I think the most likely reason Ragatha wasn't chosen to make as a plush was because she would be the most challenging or expensive to make. Ragatha would need the right eye button and the hair would require yarn. Meanwhile, Pomni and Jax can both be make of just stitching, cloth, and stuffing.

Gooseworx, creator of the show, has said that Caine is not evil. While the rest of the main cast (minus Bubble) are humans, Caine is an AI, and doesn’t understand humans all that well. He tries his best, but sometimes his good intentions have bad executions. As for the X-ed out Queen chess piece, all Gooseworx has given us is that her name is Queenie. Jax didn’t teleport. It was the classic “character runs so fast they leave a cloud behind that’s shaped like them,” cliche.

Caine also says "Why are you like this?" to Bubble, and while it is clearly a joke, it also shows that Caine is not the same AI as Bubble, and has trouble understanding the other AIs just as much as he has trouble with humans.

I think it’s definitely interesting that Kaufmo the clown became abstracted when Pomni the jester arrived. Completely unrelated to their personalities their general “schtick” is almost identical. It could be theorised that Pomni is somewhat of a replacement to Kaufmo. Edit: I didn’t know this but @celeste7223 informed me that “Jesters & clowns are inverts of each other. When it comes to Jax, I believe that a lot of his 'uniqueness' when it comes to him compared to the others, is both a part of how long he's been around, and how he decided to handle being trapped there. I don't believe he has any special powers or such, he just has a good grasp of how the 'game' works, and has decided to take advantage of that knowledge. At least that is how it felt to me.

He is all about self preservation. Soon as he saw the clown abstracted he was out of there. When he saw a goink that was glitching he knew why cause he knew what happened. He was hiding in the hole and about to spill the reason why when the abstracted clown fell through as he was about to say it. No powers as you say. It's not that deep in this case. I love his sarcasm and he's my favorite character. Also ragatha said he knew she was afraid of bugs. Obviously she told him that during the time they've been there. He's a prankster.

The VR headset is clearly an older model from the same era, but unlike the computer it was probably unboxed recently or was just never used, and dusted off and used one more time. art history major here! the whole blue and red thing that ash pointed out is actually very prevalent in not only the last supper, but all other depictions of christ. he’s almost always painted wearing red and blue (but especially red) because blue is seen as a heavenly color and the red represents his martyrdom. so very interesting to think about, especially since she’s the only character with that color combo.

What's really cool is that while this is another instance of "Colorful kid friendly-looking thing actually being dark", it doesn't try to lull you into a false sense of security like most other media. It shows you it's full hand very quickly, wasting no time in letting you know that the whole situation is an existential nightmare. Rather than holding a happy facade and building up to an inevitable "What's the catch", it gets that out of the way right at the start and you get to watch everything and everyone desperately try to sugarcoat it and keep up that facade of everything being fine. You've already seen the horrors, and now you're just left with cheerfulness you already know is fake. It's a lot like returning to Headspace for the first time in Omori. Despite all the smiles and colors, you already know it's just a distraction and that something's very, very wrong, and you're left just... waiting for something to happen.

Watching Matpat get suspicious of Jax is really making me re-think him. The ending scene where he says hes starving before being told by Kinger that simply isn’t possible feels like Jax may be real. Its leading me to think Jax is really hungry. He may be leaving and entering the world by the VR headset to observe the test subjects and messes with the other characters knowing they aren’t real like any Game Dev does with their projects. But he is human and does get hungry, needing to leave to do that.

Maybe, but did you see how he reacted to Kaufmau? He was genuinely upset. Then he went and found Kinger and Gangle and got them out of Kaufmau's way. You can see it in sequence. He reassured Kinger that everything was alright, he heard Kaufmau in the distance, then he made everyone move. Sure, how he does things is wrong and rude, but when push comes to shove, he got the others out of danger. That, and this whole story is about survivors who fight to hold on to sanity. Jax is not good, sure, but his actions make a lot more sense if you think of him as a jaded survivor using instant gratification as a coping mechanism

Actually, I think Jax means it literally. He's been trapped in the Digital World for so long he feels like he's starving; just dying to know what eating real food feels like again. Think Cypher from The Matrix, but in reverse. I'd also argue he's similar to Kaufmo in that he's probably slowly losing it while looking for a possible exit. It'd readily explain why he has keys to every door he could find in the Circus, including key to all of the tenants' rooms. He could arguably be looking for the lock to Cain's door, assuming it even exists.

the last scene is interesting, theres several old folklore stories that basically warn you that you shouldn't accept food when you've been spirited away to another world by fae, because accepting their hospitality leaves you indebted to them and traps you in that world. caine takes her out of the "exit" and immediately gives her a feast, followed by the camera cutting to the "real world" where she is gone if this is his usual reward for adventures, and everyone gets one when they enter, that could be why nobody else was able to find the exit door or maybe im looking too far into it 🤔

If I recall, the story is about how Persephone gets kidnapped by hades into the greek underworld (Hades) Hermes was about to rescue her but he found out that she had eaten a piece of pomegranate and had to leave her. One aspect of Caine's design that's interesting is, well, that he has just jaws and eyes for a "face." (I know, how observant of me.) This is something that comes up in glitches where a character's face model doesn't load properly, but their mouth and eyes are still rendered. If Caine is bugged, but got around it by resizing and repositioning his remaining assets, then he might at least be aware something is wrong with him and his environment.

I have a small theory. Kinger brings ups a insect collection twice in this episode, but what if he means insects as bugs as in glitches in the digital world and he stays borderline insane to avoid becoming abstracted or caught by Caine? Its been working for him for awhile since he's apparently the longest unabstracted character and would probably have the most information about the digital circus.

I think it's the fact that if they know your fake laughing they could see it in a pessimistic way. Become insecure or see the person be insensitive by faking something and could lead the person wondering if anything coming from their friend emotionally was real or have they been faking? Idk. I've never thought about it in Matt's way of looking at it.

My personal theory is that their physical bodies were scanned in with them and meshed into an art model body leaving their headsets to hit the floor and someone connected to Pomni went looking for her but when they couldn’t find her they set the headset back where it was supposed to go and turned off the computer severing her way back without knowing it was all a clue. After this they preserved her room as it was leaving it to collect dust hoping that she would return one day and the end scene might indicate someone else could come in too. Highly unlikely but it’s fun to imagine that someone she knows but can’t fully recognize comes in by accident while looking for clues as to where she could have gone

Theres a line right at the end (1:22:20) when Jax speaks to Kinger: "Since when are you an expert on the digital world?" This really jumped out to me. It feels like it's foreshadowing that Kinger was somehow involved with the project, having hidden knowledge that he eventually forgot due to insanity. He lost his mind, but bits and pieces of what he used to know are still there. He was the first player to arrive in the digital world, so maybe he was part of the production team making the game, and was the first to test it out? Maybe Kinger and the Queen piece we're the first beta-testers...

Because of his madness, the narrator of the book said that Benny was the happiest of the remaining survivors because he couldn't grasp just how dire their lot really was. I get the vibe that none of the characters that we see are actually antagonists. Jax seems like he uses comedy as a coping mechanism and lost human empathy from being stuck there for so long. Caine’s line about the exit door “ I didn’t know what to put on the other side…” suggests that he is trying to help but doesn’t know what actually exists outside of the digital plane. The office looks like it was made out of his old jumbled memories (explains the backrooms layout) and his old assets(the dirty computer and VR headset). If he got trapped in the game like everyone else then he probably survived by forgetting that reality existed in the first place (People only go insane when the look for the exit). This theory that Caine got trapped also suggests that the story might be taking place in modern times and the 1990/2000’s setting is Caine stuck in the past.

I don’t know what Caine is, but I would bet he has no control over the doors, like if they are also a glitch he has no way to understand or cover up, and perhaps it is tied to each person’s will to get out. So the less they care about leaving the less they show up, would make sense how a new arrival would see them more often.

My biggest take away from the pilot (after watching a few times) was all the eye imagery. Obviously Caine has his eyes everywhere and in paintings, but there's also the Gloink Queen with a lot of eyes, Pomni's eyes changing based on her emotions, Ragatha and Zooble having actual mismatching eyes, Kinger's eyes being very poignant and somewhat off of his body, etc. If it was just associated with Caine, then that's one thing, but the fact that eyes are so prominent throughout the whole episode with multiple characters makes me think it's something else. I don't know what, but I thought it'd be worth pointing out.

A prominent theory that has been going around is that Jax has the keys because, although he acts nonchalant, he is secretly trying to find an exit himself. Another thing to note is in the Q and A post with the creator, she says he is morally the worst character. Also! The "did you expirience a gameshow in there?" Line is a reference to Goosework's (the creator working with glitch) series Little RUNMO + it's like a running theme in the other series she has worked on.

Well considering that most the other characters are pretty goodie two shoes, that doesn't say much. With the exception of maybe Cane, but hes kinda chaotic neutral at this point. Plus Jax does save them. He creates that whole and tosses the bowling ball to quickly force them over it so they would be able to escape. He does this only after he hears Kaufmo roar. He could've easily just saved himself, but he chose not to. He did it quickly and without really panicking them, thus risking them freezing or fighting him on quickly escaping. Again, he could've just save himself.

I think there’s the allusion to the 7 disciples if you include Pomni in the original “cast” lineup in the opening credits somewhere in there.

Personally I like the theory that every character represents a different trauma response, or unhealthy characteristic. Pomni for anxiety, Jax for dismissal, Ragatha for placation (i.e. people pleasing), Zooble for depression, etc. Ive heard talk going around about the possibility that the game was originally created to aid mental health and this was something that the characters all signed up for to help test the programming.
