I reallly love this rucking thing. I started doing it in June out of sheer Corona fat and boredom. ..I didn't realize throwing weights in a backpack had a name. Great video Randall. Started delivering newspapers in the north of England when I was 13. Up at 5.30 am, two canvas shoulder bags full of papers and magazines. My route was a gradual ascent up the side of the valley until the last bit which was steep a/f . 6 days a week, wind, rain, sleet, snow. Did that for 3 years. I could walk like the wind and still can in my late fifties. Never quit.

I didn't know this had a name!!! I just started doing it on my own. I was 60 lbs overweight back in February and started slowly dragging my ass around town for about 3 miles every other day (kicked my ass). Then in April I went out to the hilly woods (kicked my ass). Then I started walking 1.5 hours through those hills almost every night (kicked my ass). Shortly after, I bumped it up to 3 hours nearly every night (meh...). Then I realized I wasn't even breathing hard going up a near vertical incline. So, I dug out my pack and loaded it to 30 lbs with books and camping gear. Ironically, with a 30 lb pack, I still weigh less than when I started back in the Spring so I'm not sure I can brag about anything. Anyway, it's all been working and is amazing. I'm totally hooked on it. Need it! I'm in excellent shape, my mind is clearer (don't underestimate silence in nature), and I've lost 51 lbs. I love that this has a name. Good luck to everyone. If you are fat and completely out of shape, just start moving slowly. Just walk around town. Don't push it. You've got so much weight, you are already rucking. Maybe set some moderate distance goals but basically just drag your carcass as far as you can. You'll start increasing naturally without injury, boredom, etc. Good Luck!

Came across your channel with your mission get home video. Retired army 25 years in the infantry and the rest in armor. Is there anything that can be done to improve cartilage breakdown in the knees? I’ve been sticking to bicycling for cardio because of the knees. My longest ruck was 100 miles in three days. The unit wanted to recreate Sherman’s March to the sea. It sucked. Feet were tore up and then got to jump back into Bragg. Loving your videos. I’ll listen to your longer videos in the truck like a podcast. Been rucking for months now. I used to have trouble with 9kg, now im walking my dog with 18kg. Dont really track my walks but i basically just walk my dog when i ruck so its reallllly convinient. I noticed i got what i would call "Real world Strong", like working strong, physical labour strong, i live in the hills and mountains so thats a plus. I used to do Prison style workouts but i dropped all of that because i simply dont need it anymore. I am only doing pullups, rucking is my main strengh excersise and endurance excersise (apart from cycling as well) and im in the shape of my life (and i tried alot of different shit). This is by far the most useful, multifunctional. And i partly disagree with the tennis shoe part. I think you can ruck in them IF you Supplement your other walks and activities with barefoot shoes.

Really enjoying your channel! I'm 48, fat, but otherwise in good shape, no knee, back or other health problems. Pretty active, do a lot of hunting, fishing and some hiking. Haven't done any rucking since my army days 1990 to 1994. Few months ago I dug old ALICE out of the basement and got her all cleaned up, repaired and packed with some camp essentials. About 35# of weight in her. Every other day I carry her on a 2.3 mile course through a local park while walking the dogs. Haven't been timing myself, but my walks usually take about an hour to hour and 15, lots of up and down small hills, a considerable amount of that is spent fooling with the dogs, fetch, etc. Great way to break in boots. I want to start doing some longer rucks on local dirt country roads to get in better shape. I get what you are saying about speed being better than distance. What do you think a good starting distance would be? I was thinking 5 miles to start. Roads around here have hills, but gentle slopes.
@GruntProof
@GruntProof 5 лет назад
Hey that's great man! Glad to see another veteran picking up the ruck again. I usually advise people to start with 4 miles just so the math is easier. Nothing wrong with one extra mile though. Try to pick up a 15 minute per mile pace without running. Also, I know 35 pounds sounds easy but I'd drop it to 25. That'll guarantee no injuries and youll have plenty of room for growth
@russellthompson6204
@russellthompson6204 5 лет назад
Thanks for the advice and tips. I was thinking the 35# was kinda wimpy after the 60-80# I regularly carried as a medic while in the army. Of course I was MUCH younger and in peak physical fitness back then so Ill take your advice on weight and distance starting points. My wife is from New Zealand and is a distance runner. She wants us to go to New Zealand and hike the Heaphy Track, 82km. I've got two years to prepare, hence dusting off old ALICE (issued to me in 1990). Just curious, why are you living in Germany?

55 lbs would be a lot for me because of my destroyed back. But if you're otherwise healthy and built up to that weight and distance, I think you're fine. A lot of it has to do with the form I discussed. And yea, running with that much weight could hurt.

If you're new I'd suggest you start with nothing. Some workout clothes and boots, then try to hit 4 miles in under 1 hour. Once you meet that pretty consistently, then add weight. 17 lbs is sort of random, but better than nothing. I'd say by the time you can add weight, you should be able to start with 15-20 lbs. Try it out and see how you feel. Thanks

Sometimes I "trot" but make sure my feet never leave the ground and I am always naturally conscious of form and mechanical efficiency. That's tough one because a lot of it is personal preference. I love the original Merrel MOABs or Ventilators. But for people starting off I usually recommend a basic issue military boot. They give you ankle support, are designed for that type of work, and can usually be found cheap as hell. In that case I'd suggest the Bates or Danner desert boots. None of the fancy stuff. Most important is the fit

Army standards are 15 min mile at what weight? I just started rucking not too long ago, using about 50 lbs, and having trouble getting below 17 min mile. It is about 30 degrees these days. FML! Thanks for your service!
@GruntProof
@GruntProof 4 года назад
Thanks! 35 lbs. If you're just starting out 50 lbs is way too heavy. Try 15-20 or even no ruck, just boots. I usually advise people to beat a 15 min/mile before adding any weight because, without running, that's already tough

Begginers (ofc advanced ruckers too) should be allowed to fck it when ever needed extra boost. Mental fck reflects on muscles, allready proven in sports. Also, the word is in use, described in dictionary and it's completely fine to use. If u fcking want.

@@GruntProof Hey no worries. Yeah Meaford is in Ontario, Canada. I was there during my BMQ-L, which is the phase two of our basic training where we learn the soldiering part of things, as opposed to just straight up BMQ which was all the administration, boot shining and weapon drills etc. Meaford doesn't have the best reputation, mainly because the weather always finds a way to be shit :D

This is my cardio nowadays - I just put on a 45-pound backpack that I have in my student apartment and then walk around and look at random things at the campus, lol. I also wear it when I go shopping, which is roughly a 15-minute trip to the store and then another 15-minute trip back home again.

Bro great video. I've been training by hiking the river fishing with tons of water and gear and now going to start applying some of your tactics. Seems like a solid way to start getting that progressive overload and enjoying life. Right now I just do 3-4 miles with a 25lb starting bag. Follow up in 3 months

Just started a few months ago. I'm recovering from broken right shin and broken left Forearm. Got hit-and-run by someone driving a truck last year. But rocking has helped my leg and body get stronger and your videos help me a lot to do so. I'm at 32 pounds rucking now and I started at 23 pounds for rucking. Of course before that I was just walking fast and working on balance. Thank you for sharing the knowledge for someone who cannot biomecanically run yet, so rucking is the best answer. Before rucking I was an endurance bicyclist.

Jus a random question mate, Im currently starting a weight loss at 16 rn, and I'm starting to get into hiking and then slowly transition into rucking, furthermore, quick question, do military boots come with steel cap? Like is it good or bad to hike in steel cap, cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿🥂

Soft soled,cushy trail runners might do some real damage during rucking or long days carrying a heavy pack. Been there and paid the price for it. Better to find good boots,break them in gradually and look after your feet.

back when I was in the Corps we were at Subic Bay, the upper MAU camp and had to do a 17 mile force march. I was doing pretty good until we hit the 7 steps to heaven about 12 miles out. That was back in '74, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Oooorah

Yeah I've been rucking for a year or so now. Everything he said is correct. I'm smashing out 12km (7.5 miles) in under 1h 50 mins carrying 30lbs, 4 times a week. I'm absolutely ripped. I seriously don't need to actually do any other exercise...although I do like to throw in a few pull ups on my off days. ;-) The only real side effect is that after a short while, you need to take a massive shit as soon as you finish! haha
