My dad was a joiner and a craftsman, I only did 4 out of my 5yr apprenticeship. He had several types of stone and a favourite was his Arkansas whetstone which was quite rare for English joiners to have back in the 1940s. Although I've tried many methods, and done better than some folk, I have never achieved a perfectly sharp edge on my tools or knives.
