Keeping time was challenging for ancient civilizations, so this one built a city to do it.

The first Vox Borders documentary is releasing on RU-vid and Facebook on October 17th. The other five documentaries will release weekly after that. Subscribe to the newsletter to stay up to date on the Vox Borders documentary releases: www.vox.com/borders-email, or follow Johnny on social media.
This dispatch is from the ancient archaeological site at Teotihuacán, in Mexico. I walked around the ruins with a guide, and learned about how the people who built the site planned it in a way that helped them track time. Scholars theorize that the structures at Teotihuacán were built to align with the cosmos on certain days of the year, which let the people know when it was time to plant crops or conduct rituals.
Vox Borders is a new international series focused on telling the human stories that emerge from lines on the map. I've traveled to six different border locations to produce a final set of documentaries. While I travel I'm releasing video dispatches on RU-vid and Facebook, documenting my experiences in a vlog that's independent from the final Vox Borders documentaries. Learn more: www.vox.com/borders

I am an intern at the Teotihuacán archeological site and always wondered where drone footage ended up as I often see people using drones to film there. Nice documentary! I was so excited to see my home and workplace featured in one of my favorite RU-vid channels. Much love from Mexico.

You guys should travel to the ancient city of Tikal, Guatemala. It's very fascinating especially since the Mayans of Tikal completely vanished without a trace and scientists are trying to discover where they went and how and why.

I'll tell you where they are: dead :D No, seriously, they most likely collapsed as a civilization after ecological changes disrupted their nutrient sources. Afterewards, they never were the same again.
@Ildskalli

They like to call themselves that, and they're probably descended from them, but they certainly did not inherit most of the culture and civilization of the Mayans.

Ildskalli They still speak the languages of Mayans and still partake in Mayan culture. So don't assume they aren't "real" Mayan.
@Ildskalli
@Ildskalli 6 лет назад
Natalia: How would you know that? We know of Ancient Mayan only as a written language, without a phonetic counterpart. It's logical to assume that some of these current languages (notice the plural) have evolved from Ancient Mayan - but how much did they change, and how much was lost? Also, acculturation in the Mayan regions from later Mesoamerican cultures was strong. The same happened with the Inka, who annexed vast swathes of land to their realm and imposed a centralized and simplified cult, for instance - which is now recognized as part of the heritage of dozens of cultures in South America, from the Amazon to the Bolivian Altiplano and the Atacama desert (even though it's not, as these rites were imposed long ago by the Inka).

Hey by the way human sacrifices weren't violent and gruesome. These were ancient people's who willingly gave their lives for the gods, it was an honor, they wanted to do this. You cannot really say that this was horrible or terrible. A comparison is maybe joining the army, where you fight and may die, and dieing in the army is an honor as you died for your country. I know the comparison is a stretch, but so is applying modern day standards and moral to these people. Especially considering that human experimentation continued into the 20th century.

@XavierbTM1221
@XavierbTM1221 6 лет назад
@XavierbTM1221
@XavierbTM1221 6 лет назад
@luisfer9361
@luisfer9361 6 лет назад
