Midsummer is an ancient festival, whose roots go deep into the foundations of Europe. From bonfires to may-poles, flower-wreaths to fern-flowers, in this video I will be exploring the ancient roots of a venerable European tradition.

- Ravel - Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte [1:35-2:20]
- Sowulo - Ginnungagap [2:20-3:15]
- Derek & Brandon Fiechter - Sir Percival [4:02-5:15]
- Percival - Jarilo [7:45-8:30]
- Percival - Blagoslavi Mate [8:30-8:50]
- Dvořák - The Water Goblin [9:33-9:58]
- Aaron Copland - Symphony No. 3 [9:59-11:25]

The May pole is phallic and represents the horned god, the sun god or whichever Devine masculine you choose plunging into the earth which is the mother goddess. Entirely a fertility symbol. I was hoping to hear more about the ancient pagan traditions here, particularly those associated with the hunts and sacrifice (both animal and human) and of the opening of cosmic gates. No luck I guess. The other videos are too Wiccan and have lost a lot of the darker side of these traditions and ancient roots with too much blending frillyness

I am definitely not a Wiccan - in the Yule video, I even try in certain places to tackle certain (baseless) claims Wiccans commonly make. As for the lacking discussion about old pagan traditions, as I say in the video, there simply is not much evidence. The explanation for the may-pole you put forth is a rather common one, but not one with any particular evidence. It's conjecture, based on symbols in other cultures. Yet not even any experts on comparative mythology I came across discuss such ties. There's just nothing to go on. I will eventually do a video on Easter, where there will be more meat on the comparative-mythology-bone.

Fascinating! I admit I've never dived into the historical research concerning euro pagan traditions. Being more on the esoteric and demonality side of practice all my studies lean towards Egypt, Babylon, Greek and Roman. Would you say that they just didn't keep good written records of these traditions to go on? Do you possibly have any articles I could reference about that so I can use them as reference in a blog post?

I have a theory I'm trying to uncover. That there is a hidden or lost side to the solstice rituals concerning Cosmic or Astral gates. And the keeping of them closed.. Or getting them open depending on which side one happens to be on

@Veritas Dolens *applause* very very well said. My thoughts exactly. The absence of a printing press is why the oldest grimoire as we have art from the Middle Ages and they all seem to come from the solomonic text

@Veritas Dolens not disavowing by any means the power in the Goetia or Grimorium Verum.. However I don't bind or command daemons but request their assistance and treat them with respect
