Interesting fact: The bass player here is Chas Chandler, who was in a cafe in NY in 1966 about two years or so after this video was made, and heard a young guitarist named Jimmy James playing there. Jimmy James would later change his name to Jimi Hendrix. Chas was blown away and eventually brought Jimi to the UK and the rest is history.

The lead singer here is Eric Burdon. He has had a great career as a singer, here with his group The Animals, and later on with a group called War. A really good one he did with War was a song called Spill the Wine. Love your reactions, and enjoy seeing a younger generation have the chance to listen to older music - everything has had it's place in music history.

Back in the days, during the sixties, you choose a name that showed that, because you played rock'n'roll, or what they called r'n'b,some said something negative things about you, that you social deviants or juneviles delinquents. So you called yourself the Animals, and if someone asked if you're a social problem, feeling like an animal, your answer would be "no, I'm a regular guy. It' s only when I'm playing that I have an animal pleasure." The young ones wanted to live a different life than their parents. So there was a mood of " them against us" Look at some others bands names :Them, Who, Pretty Things, Troggs, even Rolling Stones Congrats four your video. There's a lot of gems in the past. I suggest Gloria or Baby, please don't go by Them if you like your music basic and raw

I was 14 when they released this song! In that era, known as the British invasion of musical groups, begun by the Beatles, some of these bands had the most peculiar names, like The Beau Brummels, the Zombies, the Hollies, the Kinks...just on&on! The lead singer, Eric Burdon, says the name of the band was in tribute to a friend nicknamed ANIMAL that was a member of the same gang he hung out with growing up. The Animals, as did every other British band, had tons of great songs like this one here.

They were called The Animals because their live performances were savage. They were originally called The Alan Price Combo. Named for their keyboard player. Their fans dubbed them The Animals for the very reason stated previously...Try their tunes, Boom Boom, Bring It On Home To Me, and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. Eric Burdon, their lead singer, fronted War for a little while...

The Animals' guitarist Hilton Valentine, best known for the iconic opening riff on the English rock band's arrangement of "The House of the Rising Sun," has died at the age of 77. 29th January 2021. R.I.P. Keyboard player Alan Price has a fear of flying, and as he travelled the world performing his 60s hits he was gripped with the constant fear of flying. He had to have a shot of vodka before he could even step on a plane.“I once did a tour of 70 cities so that meant 70 vodkas!” said Alan, whose keyboard wizardry turned the Animals into a household name. It was one of the reasons he left the band in 1965.

It was in the movie called "Casino" as well as many other films and TV shows. I heard they were called the Animals because they got wild onstage (this video was made for a TV show, so it doesn't really count as a stage show). :D Why not "Animals", anyway? You have bands called the Crickets, Beatles, Yardbirds, Byrds... So this group has all the species covered.

Some of my favorite bands back then were the Animals, the Byrds, the Turtles, the Yardbirds, and of course the Beatles (although not named after beetles). The early Beatles embraced the Beat sound or the Mersey beat (along the Mersey River at Liverpool, England). The Beatles were not part of the literary Beat generation (the Beatniks) centered around Greenwich Village (New York City) in the early 1950s.

A bit of info about the recording of the song. Eric (the sjnger)was in his early twenties, this song was there first hit. This song knocked a series of Beatle songs that held the charts for 44 weeks out. The song was recorded in the early morning, only time they could get the studio. Eric said they did a quick run through of the song then recorded the song in one take all done in 15 minuties, no lip sinking at that time. Songs were short because of radio stations demand for songs under three minutes. There are several hits to listen too." Don't let me be misunderstood, Sky Pilot, We got to get out of this place, White Houses and San Francisco nights." Enjoy and remember in 1964 there were no FM radio stations and no stereo systems. One of the great bands to come out of the sixties.

This clip was made in 1964 as part of a UK colour film called Pop Gear for paying theatre release. This explains the early high quality color images we luckily have for this performance and a few other top UK only music artists when the film was made. RU-vid has quite a few segments from this UK movie Pop Gear with the US contribution being to re title it Go Go Mania and add a few intro segments to satisfy the US audience. A RU-vid search for Pop Gear Go Go Mania shows the segments : @ The intro by TCM explains the background of the film. While some of these segments were likely to be shown on US Colour TV much later , the source would originally be this high quality film. In 1964 images not recorded on film would be much lower quality videotape, not the notable quality images used here. Especially with the inferior US NTSC standards often called Never The Same Colour. So lucky the film was made instead of relying on low standard video tape recordings that were usually taped over anyway to save tape cost money. I would be amazed to see any video recording from 1964 up to this standard of image quality. Sound quality irrelevant as a better sound source can easily replace or lesser quality film track early source. These films mainly used mimed performances as the vast majority of theatre audiences wanted to hear the music performance as they knew it from the records. Hope this helps people who have the colorized and vidoetape theories that pop up.

Their other big hit from around this time was a cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Their name wasn't considered unusual at all at the time. In 1964 when this song came out, the Beatles were the most popular group, and other high-charting band names included the Who, the Turtles, the Troggs, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Byrds, all of which you should look into. If you really want to get into weird band names, look into the punk era of the late seventies and early eighties, when there were band names like the Dead Boys, the Dead Kennedys, the Violators, the Sex Pistols, the Stranglers, the Slits (an all-girl band), the Circle Jerks, and many more.

Back on the 60's, when The Beatles made it huge, all the rock bands were copying them. The Beatles were a strange name, especially this the different spelling. Bands came up with strange names like the Byrds, the Monkees, the Turtles, the Strawberry Alarm Clock. So the Animals was just another name that was thought up to be different. But this was not something new. The Beatles came up with their name because they loved Buddy Holly and The Crickets. John Lennon was very inventive with words so he change the spelling from Beetles to Beatles to emphasize the Beat in their music.

Look what kids your age did back then though. They wrote this stuff themselves. Wasn't pre-packaged auto tuned Drake mumbling pointless crap that people made them do. They believed in their shit.

Of course this song was a cover of a traditional folk song. This is the most known version, but other people who sung it were Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan

Isn't this song a cover though? You don't gotta come here just to shit on other music/genres, people can like all types, man. Trust me, many artists still write and produce their own songs as well. They still "believe in their shit". Let people be happy and get your head out of your ass.
