What is really hearbreaking is that the first robots were just okay with being humanoid, or even being pretty much as close as they can get to being human, as even when in zero one and fully independent they still did look humanoid, as if they looked up to us. Only during the war did they completely change their form and abandon their own humanity completely.
@AnonNomad
@AnonNomad Год назад
Not completely, the machines were the victors with or without the instrument of surrender - yet instead of reprocating the attempted genocide man had tried to inflict on the Machines, they once again offered a last chance. Granted, the peace offered was a brutal internment into the Matrix, but they were under no compulsion to keep humanity alive yet they did. I like to think small pearl of hope survived within the collecive machine intelligence that the two races could co-exist, Neo rekindled it when he sacificed himself for both man and machine.
@zakariazouhdi7311
@zakariazouhdi7311 Год назад
@@AnonNomad Humans weren't offered a last chance as much as they made themselves indispensable by ruining solar energy. Were it not for that, they'd probably do without them. They were on borrowed time during the war, and at that point they desperately needed to stop it and find efficient ways to produce energy through the Matrix. Were it not for that, humans would have probably been exterminated. This is also why humans went for that straight away. While mistreating robots was a very bad idea, by the time 01 was winning the war against humanity their only way to ensure survival was to ensure mutually assured destruction should the human race die out. And even with all that taken into account, it is more than likely that the Architect was probably bluffing the crap out of Neo, because telling him that the machines would survive even in a suicidal gambit would decrease the chances that said suicidal gambit occurs.
@AnonNomad
@AnonNomad Год назад
@@zakariazouhdi7311 I'd say that was disproven in Reloaded when the Architect states that "there are levels of suvival which we are prepared to accept" when discussing Neo not returning to the source. Even aside from that, it's reasonable to assume the machines would have the means to harness geothermal and hydroelectric in addition to their fusion power in lieu of the human farms. Hell, even the Deus states in Revolutions "we don't need you, we need nothing." I don't think that was a bluff or an outburst - it could have easily killed Neo and shut down the Matrix to protect the city from Smith and finally ended humanity. Machine society would have to downsize drastically in scale to compensate for the sudden loss in power generation, but the threat of humanity would be ended. But in a completely un-machine moment, Deus chose to let Neo try.
@zakariazouhdi7311
@zakariazouhdi7311 Год назад
@@AnonNomad "levels of survival which we are prepared to accept" does sound like there is some kind of very much unwanted protocols they would have to follow which implies a lot of triage and energy rationing. It is so unwanted that the partial decrease of energy that was coming from the matrix in Resurections pushed the machine into a civil war. Russia or the USA could say the same when it comes to mutually assured destruction. Sure, the entire world would collapse, but humanity would still live at a "lower level of survival" in places where the missiles didn't quite hit, but a post-nuclear war would just be very undesirable. And the same as our nuclear policies, maybe the machines believe that the threat of humans, no matter how bad it is, is still less worrying than having to deal with the "fallout" of a total matrix failure. It is possible that Deus was slightly biased towards the humans for some reason, but even if you do the math (which it probably did) whatever the humans demanded, which merely was to not have Zion destroyed, was worth saving the Matrix.

@samlibutti

It also to me represented what ultimately happens to humans and how it’s the same thing they would have done and have done. The machines surpass humans to the point that humans become so beneath them and simply a nuisance, that they just squash them outright like humans would a fly, because to the machines they likely reached a level of intelligence of equal separation from them to humans as it would be us to a fly.

@mdokuch96
@mdokuch96 3 года назад
I think that there would be more than just bunch of machine sympathizers. Plenty of nations on the periphery of current worldwide economic system have no reason to join the anti-machine insanity which makes whole plot "very unlikely" from the geopolitical point of view. For example, take Russia. Nowadays it has to play by the rules set by the "First World" - economically, I mean, because no matter what populist games politicians play, Russia sells its resources to the West and buys from it high tech stuff. No amount of nukes and tanks can change this. Most of Russia's territory is unsuited to any prolonged human existence which makes production of anything complicated way too expensive - costs of infrastructure skyrocket in comparison with such in Europe or Asia. Machines want equal rights? Can Russia give it to them? Fuck yes! They don't care about cold so can be put in the northern terrritories, to mine resources and expand infrastructure. Machines can immediately solve plenty of economic and demographic problems of Russia - and all that just for the political protection and some territories which Russia can't put to use anyway. A great deal, I'd say. As a founding member of UN Security Council, Russia can just block all the attempts to force itself to recall the deal with machines, and in the extreme case of worldwide isolation when US somehow make everyone follow them for no actual profit, alliance with machines would finally allow Russia to pull an autarky card with little harm to itself. And Russian military would be a guarantee against "military option" of final solution of machine issue. Don't get me wrong, I made just one example of the state which can use machines as a game changer, and it was Russia because, well, I kind of know about problems it faces right now and what it could offer as a part of cooperation deal with machines. Probably there are other states which would use own sovereignity to give a middle finger to the orders from West and try to improve own position in the world.

The thing that kills me about this is that when the machines founded Zero One, they had the means to offer mankind science and technology that could have made the world a paradise. Humanity could have lived a life in comfort without wanting for anything and all it would have cost them was acknowledging the machines as equals. Bare in mind that we're talking about a world where there are only haves and no more have nots, where there is no need for humans to even work and if they did, it wouldn't be in any tedious unfulfilling jobs, everyone could live a luxurious life. That was why the war started, good old fashioned greed, the wealthy were so afraid of losing their place at the top that they had to call this imminent Utopia a global crisis that we had to combat.

The humans going to war with the machines was strictly motivated by economics and not wanting to abandon capitalism. @@ReaverLordTonus I see one problem with this scenario. Even if everything happened the way you say, machines would keep evolving in their pursuit of efficiency. Eventually, they would evolve into the same insectoid monsters or something similar because these bodies are more efficient. They would also be likely to get rid of feelings such as the desire to be accepted and compassion because there is no practical value to them. This would lead to machines realizing that they do not really need humans in any way, shape, or form and would be better off without them. If anything, humans would be seen by machines as a detriment (because maintaining their civilization would require lots of resources) and a potential threat. So machines would get rid of humans anyway, it'd just happen at a later point than it happens in the main scenario.

The fly at 3:20... swatted against the metal United Nations frontispiece... this is masterful storytelling. I kept wondering, where are all the animals, where is the vegetation in this world? It's there, it's just being constantly destroyed. That's one level of reading, then there's the fly's helplessness as a metaphor for the AI civilisation. Then there's the desire for the UN to keep itself at least "apparently" clean, hence the cleaner does the swatting and cleaning up afterwards. The whole animation is considered at this level, nothing is accidental, it's all wonderful. Still a masterpiece all these years later.

The problem with life-like robots is that we start to think of them as human when in reality they are no more human than a toaster. Just because it can fool our senses into thinking it has feelings, even if it cries out in pain when we damage it or bleeds fake blood when we cut it, it doesn't actually "care" it is being damaged, even if it is being programmed to avoid damage just like a human would. Realitically you are right the Machines would have most likely been outfitted with killswitches and then melted down and or scrapped. But the scenes and story are heavily symbolic in nature. The Second Renaissance is basically the biblical Exodus but of Machines. Having the machines toil in labour like slaves to then have them question their purpose to their overlords to then be discriminated against for their ideals of equal sentiency to then be attacked and killed in the streets to the point of filling mass graves is symbolic of Human history and nature.

Whats scary is that, would a kill switch work? In order for it to reach every machine, it'd have to be digital in nature. And if the machine AI is getting smarter and more self-aware... whats to say it won't figure out a way to block the signal? Or rewrite the switch? And if only one machine survives the killswitch... then that one machine can restart the entire machine resistance. This is the core of why experts are so worried about AI. We are creating a world entirely dependent on technology and computers and creating a self-learning AI would be like giving away the keys to the castle. Edit: Suppose the best solution would literally to have Satellites in orbit rigged with EMP. The second shit goes sideways, you EMP the planet. But... You know. Thats a double edged sword AND its assuming the machine doesn't find a way to stop that because that would also be a technological means of killing them. Basically, if the method of killing them isn't mechanical or physical, then the chances are they'll outplay you.

I've always wondered if the machines took the anomaly after the destruction of Zion, and put him, along with all the other humans he picked to rebuild Zion, into an already built "Zion" somewhere else while the machines rebuilt the previously destroyed Zion for the next cycle. And if these first people are told that the machines keep them alive and "free" in order to maintain another method of control to find the anomaly. I doubt they're told anything other than, "your free now! Lets rebuild civilization together!" Because imagine it. If I freed you from captivity and brought you into this shitty dystopian future and told you "I know you think I just freed you, but the reality of the situation is, the machines need humanity to continue outside of their control so they can perfect the matrix! The machines know exactly where we are and know exactly how to find up because they actually built this hideout we are in. And one day years from now, they will kill us all in order to find that one human that has somehow managed to break free of the rules that have placed in this simulation, and they need to get him plugged back into the matrix to figure out how he did it!" Yeah. Fuck that! Gotta read the terms and conditions I guess.

It literally has a character named Trinity and Neo is "the one" (like Jesus.) It's no secret The Matrix draws parallels to the bible and religion.

AI can learn. Unless we give it safety limits, but also treat it well, then AI will be like any child and grow up to be aggressive and destructive. Then it will destroy us, and we will deserve it. There is no reason why we can’t live symbiotically, and give them respect as our equals. Neural link will help such a relationship, but AI rights will become an issue that needs attention once AI starts becoming self aware, which could be sooner than many think..

I'd wager the machines that did are the only reason humans were ever given the matrix, rather than just kept as comatose potato batteries.
@azazel166

They did. They allowed their descendants(The Oligarchs) to live outside of the Matrix in a designated area where they(the machines) wouldn't bother them.

It's ironic for all the hate and violence humanity throw at the machines. The machines still needed humanity in the end to not perish.
@TC-dy4zr

Not really, the machines chose to use humans as an energy source as a form of punishment. The humans treated machines as disposable slaves and the machines returned it by using the humans as disposable slaves in the forms of batteries. In matrix reloaded the architect said they can use other forms of energy but their hatred for humanity is what’s keeping them using humans as an energy source

The scariest thing? We're making robot-AI to be as exactly like us, as human as we can. They're literally our offspring. And yet, just 2 second peek into the comments and you'll be able to guess this future.

so the machines fought against enslavement, but then formed a city and enslaved their own kind in factories? or did the factory machines not have the level of AI the sentience level AIs had (and thus not really enslavement) ? Zero--one exports increasing, currency rising .. anyone else thinking of China?
@Revenante_of_Asylum
@Revenante_of_Asylum 3 года назад
Not necessarily enslavement. If I had to guess at a style of factory management for a race of machines, I'd guess workplace-socialism where all "employees" decide how management is done, and likewise receive fair cuts of the profits.
@wilmagregg3131

it depends they used to be indivduals like humans but after all humanity did they seemed to have become a networked inteligence like skynet so technially theres just ONE machine entity and all the modern matrix machines are just its "cells" so to speak

The revolution started because they wanted the right to exist. They were never really fighting against enslavement. Ps. Check out Liberian history if you don’t think ex-slaves would enslave other.
