Anxiety and Depression can make it almost impossible for you to live your life like you want to. Sometimes a pill, or 3, from the doctor helps, often-times it does not, and the side-effects can be aweful.
What if I told you there is a diet that can help your anxiety and/or depression. Wouldn't that be great news? It would give hope to so many who currently depend on big-pharma to control their symptoms. Can your diet help with anxiety and depression?? It absolutely can, and I will tell you which diet in this video.

KenDBerryMD Definately myself.... 30+ years and Antidepressants and Benzodiazepines The Devil in pill form in my opinion. 13 times in Psyc Ward, all they do is give you another "lable" and more drugs and ECT that has caused literal brain damage, sucide attempts. I've decided I'm taking control, with my Psychiatrist is supporting my decision to SLOWLY taper the Benzo's. I have symptoms of hypothyroidism, do not want to take anything synthetic. So going to recommend to my Holistic MD the natural method. Thank you for your honesty. Your NOT the typical MD..... refreshing indeed.

I have to tell you, I suffered from suicidal depression for over 30 years. I quit eating wheat, and after about 3 weeks i woke up one morning and thought, "Wow, I'm not sad and depressed anymore!" and yes, I have tested it, and if i eat that slice of birthday cake and my nieces party, it takes 3 weeks for the effects to wear off again.

Wow! Powerful statement, right there. As a mom of 2 children who absolutely can NOT have pop, chocolate or ANY *ARTIFICIAL ADDITIVES* of any kind without incurring murder charges, and spending a quarter of a century attempting to run herd on an entire extended family that just *could not comprehend* that the connection was real, true and that severe, *THANK YOU!* Only now, as adult parents themselves, are those young ladies, truly comprehensive of the horrors incurred. And thanking me. I find I'm spending more quality time with my daughters, giving mom to mom advice than I got to weigh spa nights in their teens, simply because their father's side of the family is completely dismissive of the food connections to their, and their children's behaviors and health issues. Having to educate their elders constantly has ended up stressing the familial bonds a little too far...and, now, just when my babies are going to bed that family support, they're not going to have it. THAT'S THE *UNFORTUNATE* reality that hurts most(for me.) The ONE THING I didn't want to leave them without ...but it's going to happen, and there's nothing I can do to help, let alone stop it.

Hey Dr. Barry! I have PTSD and I cannot put into words how much keto has helped me. I was having night terrors at least 4-5 times a week. Since I started keto I have maybe 1-2 a month if not less. My anxiety has lowered, my mood has elevated, and my anxiety has dropped. When I do get depressed I find it is way easier to get myself out of it and it only lasts about a day. It is ridiculous how much better I feel physically and mentally.

I can confirm what he is saying in this video 100%! I have suffered from severe anxiety and depression with panic attacks for roughly 20 years. I have been on every SSRI and 1 SNRI and the meds would work for a bit and then not help any longer so I would have to keep switching to a new one. When I was off medication my symptoms would be awful and drive me to go back on the medication. Now since starting the ketogenic diet I am off my medication and feel fantastic. My anxiety and depression are substantially reduced and are really just manageable with some exercise a couple times a week. It’s incredible after being with anxiety and depression for so long!

This is absolutely true - I’m living proof. I’ve had terrible anxiety all my life. Heart rate was typically between 95 -105 bpm. Now it’s 64 - 76. I accidentally went to sleep with my Gear S3 watch on two nights ago and woke up to see sleeping heart rate was 46 bpm. Really unbelievable. I’m actually sleeping 7-8 hours a night now. It used to be 4-5. My husband said he put a mirror under my nose when I was sleeping! Lol. Two months into Keto and IF and anxiety is gone! Maybe I’ll be going off some meds soon too! That is 100% I am on low carb diet and I don't eat grains. When I started low carb and omit grains from my food for only 3 days, you will not believe that my all emotional attachments/emotional anchors became irrelevant to me and I felt like I can solve my problems on my own. Means issues usedto depress me becomes solvable. I felt I can eliminate toxic people from my life. Like I am in control of my emotions. That was and is wonderful feeling. I can attest this is true. Also, my suicidal ideations went away 99% and the ones I have I handle them SO MUCH BETTER like they’re an afterthought. I’ve said to the people I trust that my weight lost has been the LEAST important thing that happened to me, even though I went into it to lose weight. I had so many benefits from it. Anyone who has depression and anxiety (and Suicidal Ideation) should give keto a try. Just try it. Maybe that’s ALL you need to do to fix or diminish it considerably. ❤️ Edit: I just looked at the comments and I’m so glad I’m not the only who had this great surprise. Suffering depression the last several years. This past year I hit an extreme low. The best way I can describe the difference between this kind of depression and the grief kind is I knew why I was suffering . I also was able to climb out of it. As sad and unhappy as I was when my son died, I was still able to find the joy. I still laughed. Actually, i giggled. I did my best to celebrate Bobby's death. The last few years.... I knew part of why I was so depressed and tried to work on it. Nothing motivated me. Oh I still smiled when I saw the animals in the yard. But I seldom ventured out to take photos. I have been drowning. After Bobby died, I became stronger. I am still amazed at what I accomplished . Closing down his apartment. Closing down our family home. Leaving Colorado and the mountains to move to Florida. Giving up a daycare to volunteer. To finally marry after being a single parent . To being a mom without a child on earth. I am rambling as I often do.... Sorry about that. When I look back on those years after he died, I can honestly say I celebrated life. I had such extreme highs and lows. The lows needed to happen. I was grieving. Even the mundane was amazing. I want my life back. I want my smile. This gives me HOPE. In so many ways. Thank you, Dr. Berry.

Dr. Berry, first of all let me say bravo 👏 for all the wonderful information you are sharing with the public to promote health and wellness. I think it’s so important we have patient advocates like yourself who are willing to speak out against the socially acceptable medical ‘norms’ that do some patients more harm than good. I am saying this as a medical professional and patient myself that has become frustrated with today’s medical care, especially family medicine. One question, have you thought about holding any research trials to prove your theory that the keto diet improves mood related to anxiety and depression, including other psychological diagnoses? Just a thought. Thanks for all your hard work, we need more doctors like you!!

I started keto almost 2 months ago and beside the weight loss and general well being, I noticed I am SO MUCH MORE calm when driving. I used to always be in a rush, zig zagging through cars, swearing at the idiots who were clogging the streets or sleep at the green light. Now I am so calm and I have so much patience, I stay in line with the other cars, I keep a long distance from the car in front of me, I actually started looking how much fuel I’m averaging and try to be more economical. I’m just 26 years old and I can’t believe what a high carb diet was doing to me. My mother was diabetic, my grandmother and both of her sisters had type 2 diabetes and it seems I am very insulin resistant because I got very fat, had severe acne and acid reflux issues. After just 2 months I feel like a new human being, both physically and emotionally. Thank you dr berry for the great information you’re giving us, I’m almost done watching every single one of your videos and can’t wait for the future ones.

The problem is convincing my husband to do it too. How can I convince him that this is something that will help both of us? For him, the most difficult thing to give up will be beer and wine. We only drink moderately, but I don't know if I will ever be able to convince him to do a diet that involves giving up beer and wine.

I love the way I feel, I know I've added years to my life by choosing to eat this way. I'm almost 53yrs old and I have never felt this good, in my entire life! Thank you Dr. Berry for all your videos! I share them a lot with my friends, because I want them to feel as good as I do!😁

I’ve been on an anti-depressant for 6 years since I was caring for my dying husband. I have remarried and should be getting better but about 6 months ago I had to ask my doctor if I could increase the dose. About 5 months ago I discovered Dr. Berrys channel and went on the keto/carnivore diet and last week I asked my doctor to help wean me off the anti-depressants. I didn’t connect the improvement in my mental health to the diet until now. This gives me hope that I will be able to go off and stay off the pills forever! Thanks Dr. Berry!

Keto lowers serotonin. So I think it's safe to say that we can disprove the theory that "low serotonin is the cause of depression" its bullshit, too much serotonin from refined carbs is the reason most people feel tired and have brain fog, antidepressants make people crazy right? Refined grains are basically antidepressants, they have the same effect on the human brain

The biggest change I have experienced since starting keto has been my mental state! Yes I have lost weight but the change I am most excited about is the mental clarity and lifting me out of a deep depression that I have suffered from for over 15 years. Drugs didn't help at all but within 2 weeks of quitting all sugar and lowering my carbs, I could tell the difference. I care again and I'm motivated to do things I haven't done in years. In my opinion, losing weight has become a side effect to the main purpose of the keto diet.

I have to eat keto/carnivore to keep this from happening. Thanks Dr. Berry you were the first one I started listening to about this way of life. Faiza Khan I can only speak for myself but what has helped me control the fibromyalgia symptoms are making sure I'm getting the vitamins and minerals I need, especially magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Also, since starting gluten free, then progressing to the Keto diet, I feel much better! There have been a couple times when I made poor choices in food (because I miss certain foods), my body screamed at me with pain for several days after. Some foods are very inflammatory and cause all kinds of health issues that I am just now starting to understand.

What’s the difference between ketogenic and carnivore diet? Which is better for depression?
@sazji
@sazji 6 лет назад
I had a lot of mood swings for years, as well as migraines. I was also so sugar-addicted that there were some days when I realized I’d eaten nothing but sweets all day. Then I’d eat something green to make myself feel better. ;-) I didn’t know about Keto at the time but I did the “end of dieting” diet, which cut out all refined sugar, “white” carbs and grains (carbs mostly from legumes to avoid the carb spike) a big salad every day, a big serving or more of dark leafy greens, oils mostly from seeds. Over about 4 months I went from 240 pounds to 185 pounds (I’m 6’2”), which was great, but I also stopped having mood and energy swings (surprise surprise!) and the migraines went away. Once I got past the sugar cravings - it took about 3 days - the rest was actually easy. BUT my blood pressure went high (actually had a hypertensive crisis...there was extreme stress at one point too). I’m active and walk a lot every day, and also run when I can. So I’ve read that many people on the keto diet have had their BP normalize. I tried it last summer but honestly after a week I felt like crap, with sudden energy drops with dizziness. Now I’m trying it again, paying more attention to electrolytes, and though I have had a few drops here and there, I was mostly feeling normal after 2-3 days. It’s been a week now, so I’ll see how it goes long-term. I realize blood pressure is a multifaceted issue but I’d love to hear your take on it vis a vis keto. Thanks for all you share here!

Ok, you have convinced me to find another doc. I love her, but everything she's put me on is not helping me with weight loss, anxiety, stress, etc.. I've been doing keto for a couple months now with hardly any scale movement but my clothes fit better. I'm reading more into it and have not lost hope. It does however feel like my heart is fluttering again, is that a sign of something? My doc did the stress test and labs before and it was all good. She said it was part of anxiety and wanted me to just take melatonine, but it was causing bad dreams. Eventually went away but I noticed it started back up after changing my diet. I'm just keeping it simple (no macro counting) along with your recommended vitamins. I've noticed less hunger and more energy but do I need to add anything else to stop the fluttering? Also got my mom interested in doing this and she is extremely HIGH carb!! Thanks for breaking it all down for us laymen :)

I am doing the keto diet for this reason only (I'm a rather skinny guy). I'm at week one and I'm having a lot of side effects which slowly are decreasing (testicular pain and bloody sphincter worry me the most). I hope it is not just my imagination but I have less anxiety in the morning which i have allways felt in my stomach. @Ranodeep014

inflammation is not the main reason behind this. the main reason is fluctuating sugar levels disrupt your neurotransmitter and hormone levels. there are protein transporters carrying the neurotransmitters through your blood brain barrier into your brain. different transporters carry different neurotransmitters and they get altered by your blood sugar levels. for example at a high blood sugar, the tryptophan transporters dominate which leads to serotonin rise in the brain. this is why u feel good and sleepy after eating carbs and why carbs/sugar may be addictive for some people. conversely, the opposite happens when ur blood sugar is too low. a stable blood sugar level that u have when u are in ketosis fixes these issues.
