Petroglyph sites in North and Central America are other interesting places to visit. California and the whole Southwest US have hundreds of relics carved with mysterious looking petroglyphs, several within walking distance of my house in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains.

Considering how boring our ancestor's lives were, many of them had LOADS of time to observe the heavens every day and night. Imagine a world without any electronics whatsoever, and all you had was a small city with minimal resources, close family, close friends, and that's about it. We have a huge array of computer generated ways of creating "art" and yet we still find value in hand painted canvas. Same with wood carving, there's lots of machine and computer generated ways of carving wood, skillfully hand carved objects are still highly prized, stone carving and so on. A nicely chiselled or carved piece of old vandalism is much more appreciated than a modern scrawl with a Sharpie. Maybe the aliens found it fun? The top of the Gobekli Tepe stone does resemble a meteor, but many not just one. It is thought that a meteor did hit the earth around 10,900 B.C. But it was quite large and as it came into our atmosphere it burst into many smaller meteors, yet still leaving one large meteor that caused the majority of the destruction. Either way, to have lived through and seen such an event must have been very terrifying.

It would be a shame to rush such an important project and possibly damage some part of it that would give us a better understanding of it's use and purpose. They started the excavation in the 80's and it will be another 50 years before they are anywhere close to being finished. And now they allow tourists to observe them work, from a distance. So they are trying to balance everyone's interests.

I heard the ancient site of Karahan Tepe- was actually a lot older then Göbekli Tepe is. I for get what they said. They say that it's about 13,000 years old. That's the age that the mainstream scientists will give it due to some of the dating. I agree that the last time that it was used may have been 13,000 I think that it's much older. When you look at sites around the would it shows us that the older civilizations were more advanced. Now lets look at Göbekli Tepe. The "T" pillars were very hard to make and had smooth edges. Now, look at the walls. Random stones are there connecting the pillars. One would think that if the first builders made the T's so precise they would have put the same effort into the making of the walls. This reminds me a lot of some South American sites. The zigzag symbol on top signifies the river in the underworld that acts as a veil between the living and the dead. Re: the Facet Stone, how can anyone confidently say they translated it when the language used is still unknown?
