On May 22, Apple Music dropped the top 10 entires on their 100 Best Albums list. We have A LOT to discuss! Apple Music 100 best Albums Link: en.wikipedia.o... #applemusic #michaeljackson #reactionvideo
Rob. You have the patience of Job and are truly a class act. This list is truly the work of trolls or bad interns. The mission was to drive engagement and not represent real opinion. To that end, they accomplished the mission
Haha. I try to be fair, I’ve been there and have tried to make lists with good intentions but you just never get it right!!! It’s impossible. But yeah. The mission was to drive engagement, I agree. And we go for the bait all the time. lol
As brilliant as the Miseducation is, Thriller is as close to flawless, ubiquitous, and genre crossing as an album can get. Almost every song is legitimately a notable single. Just my thoughts…
Agree. Prince is always overlooked and places far to low in every list. James brown, i could go on and on and end and basically do the whole thing again. A then a beatles album needs to be highter to. Was jimi Hendrix even on it? I don't think there is. It's made for people all born in the 2000s and haven't explored all music. Pandering to the 1 group of peole who are most likely to get apple music. It's just free promo for them and we have been guilty of contributing haha. All these lists tend to do it really. There name is all over it. Apple even drip fed their list to milk it even more.
I Love “To Pimp A Butterfly” and everything that it stands for and all the layers into it. It’s an art piece to me more than an album…but Good Kid Maad City is still my favorite. Still belongs on the list
100% “Thriller” by Michael Jackson should be Number 1 on the list it was a cosmic shift within not only music but the world in general it was a true cultural reset Lauryn Hill’s best work is not even better than Michael’s 2nd or 3rd best work let alone freaking THRILLER!!! that’s just factual.👑🎯💯(Also I must say the biggest snub from this entire list is having Taylor Swift album “1989” (Taylor’s Version) instead of Coldplay’s “Parachutes” or Jamiroquai’s “Travelling Without Moving”)
Rob, been a fan of your content since your MTV interview with Dot for TPAB. Apple Music’s criteria for picking their albums (from the website): “Assembled with the help of artists and experts, it’s a modern love letter to the records that have shaped the world we live and listen in today.” The keyword to this is the ‘shaped the world we live and listen in today’ - impact. Based on that, here are some Hip-Hop albums I think got snubbed: • Eric B. & Rakim - Paid in Full (Nas’ whole style and Blueprint for Illmatic came from this album) • Madvillian - Madvilliany (Possibly the greatest Underground Hip-Hop album of all time) • T.I. - Trap Muzik (Pioneered the term and style to a mainstream level) • Run DMC - Self Titled (Took the genre to a new level of mainstream) • The Roots - Things Fall Apart • Ye - The College Dropout • Goodie Mob - Soul Food • Ultramagnetic MC’s - Critical Breakdown • Three 6 Mafia - Mystic Stylez (Pioneering the Memphis sound/triplet flow) • Lil Kim - Hard Core (Paved the way for modern female Hip-Hop artists) • Grandmaster Flash - The Message • Bone Thugs - Creepin on Ah Come Up (Pioneering melodic rapping) • Big Daddy Kane - Long Live The Kane (Endless MC’s inspired)
@@RobMarkman they both deserve to be on the top 100. Tpab probably should be lower because of how its less accessible, but its one of those albums that once you start it, its hard not to listen to the whole album because how each song builds off of each other.
TPAB should have been on this list. It’s neck and neck with GKMC in its own way. While GKMC was more accessible, TPAB was extremely layered in its messaging and delivery. The fusion of different genres is not seen often in the mainstream, and he captured the blend perfectly. The Apple Music round table discussed how important it is to blend genres. So I’m surprised TPAB was left out completely.
@@sirflexintonYeah one thing that confused me was when Ebro was explaining why GKMC made it instead of TPAB and he basically said that GKMC is more accessible yet they put Blonde by Frank Ocean in the top 10 which is a great album but not his most accessible. So some of their explanations didn’t make sense lol.
This is a heck of a task when you think about it. Even the people making the list aren’t going to like the list because they have to mesh all their opinions together to one list. It’s something for engagement though.
As someone who was raised on Hip Hop! I watched/Followed Rob for over a decade. Of the people speaking Hip Hop he has the best credentials and most valuable POV 💎💎🙏🏾
@@RobMarkman you and Shaheem Reid are staples in the culture. I’m 38 I literally grew up watching you guys. And always felt I walked away with some type of knowledge!!
Kendrick Lamar’s good Kid M.A.D.D. City is the best rap album of all time to me. It’s the album that taught me the importance of sequencing and compelling storytelling in music. I think they got that right. I don’t agree fully with this list (and some of the placement of some albums) but there are things they got right. It’s a good start and creates a good discussion. And PLEASE take Mac Miller’s advice and go back and listen to some of the Beatles songs.💯💯💯
@@RobMarkman I am 33 years old. I’m from the Macon, GA area if that brings any more context. It’s a rural portion of Georgia. It’s considered middle Georgia. About an hour away from Atlanta. GKMC came out when I was in my senior year of college. A lot of the music from the 90’s was in rotation for me by my cousins but I want to say that I started paying closer attention to music and rapping myself when the Slim Shady LP was on its way out and Eminem was rolling out material for the Marshall Mathers LP. As far as the Beatles go, you more than likely have heard a lot of their songs in movies or referenced in other songs but did not know it was them. Let us know what you think of them
I would love a video with a few great story's you had with mac. I don't normally get emotional when big celebrities pass, but with people like Mac and steez I actually felt it a bit. I loved both of their music a lot, and they were taken far too soon. Especially steez. Both seemed like solid, nice people. Not to forget Prince and MJ. As for that list, they threw in the normal albums that appear on every list but then added a few new ones for the young kids, then picked the rest out the rest of hat. I love SZA she is amazing in every way. But control should have been thst album. Also, I love electronic music and alt rap music, and these lists never include them, greats like Aphex twin, MF doom, Death Grips, DJ Shadow & the Avalanches debuts! I could go on and on. Some have inflienced have been used in hiphop. So many artists/tbands on there were influenced by some artists and those artists never ever got a look in. All the greats like muddy waters and others from the bluegrass, jazz, and blues scenes and all the black blues artists are literally the bases of the guitar and now, espeicslly rock. So many side of modern music. Just pleased Elvis wasn't on there, haha I don't even think Gil Scot Heron, Jimi Hendrix, Bobby womack isn't on which is a crime, they have committed so many crime it's almost like they did that for attention and get free advertising as apple music will nw subconsciously be at the front of people heads. Tidal is the best for me by far, and I've tried them all. Whoever really loves music quality (audlo) you won't get better than CD quality levels or better.
A handful of artists / groups have 2 albums on the list. What think it is is that I believe they were only able to vote for 25 albums and I think with MJ so many people have Thriller has their favorite and culturally thriller has a larger impact. I am not sure if you can only vote for 25 you would have 2 MJs on your list I do think off the wall is deserving to be on the list though. There were 5-8 albums from the list I think you can easily take off. Here are a couple that I don’t think people would care if you swapped. Astro world Take care When we fall asleep 1989 Golden hour I don’t think anyone argues if you go off the wall for any of these. Good video BTW. You should definitely listen to some of these albums you have not got around to yet. Most people would say these albums are the ones to check out historically.
First love the page and the content not just the hip-hop side but the comic side too! I’m just surprised how they put Kendrick’s GKMC on here and not the album that he won a Pulitzer for. Even tho for me TPAB is his best album.
Oh and them showing love to Fleetwood!!!! Them showing love to daft punk!!! Sade! Also didn’t know anti was rhianna best album, or SOS over CTRL, but at least they have great artist on here. Would’ve loved to see Halcyon days by Ellie Goulding on here as well
In one of your videos covering the Drake/Kendrick feud, you did a breakdown of Euphoria. At one point, you mentioned you had “heard something” regarding the “back to back/I’ll get back to that” line, but you wouldn’t say anything about it because you wanted to be 100% sure. Now that the dust had settled, can you give us insight into the rumor you heard as to the meaning of that line, whether or not it was right or wrong? I’m just curious what information you were given at the time. Thanks!
The rumor was wrong. I had heard that a specific someone ghostwrote back to back but i did some digging and asking around and it did not appear to be true.
I think they could have easily taken out one of Beyoncé’s albums (she has 2 entries in the top 100) so that they could have included another one of MJ’s albums like Off the Wall or Bad
Brother I’m shocked you’ve never listened to “never mind” by nirvana. That’s an amazing body of work. And I’m a hiphop head as well. But some things shouldn’t be skipped no matter the genre 💯
i don't really care these "objective" lists cuz there's no real rubric or context given. only thing i like about it is that it generates discussion about the actual music. i much prefer to hear people's personal opinions & perspectives on *their* favorite albums. I agree w your take on Life After Death! And Off The Wall & Bad's exclusion raises hella eyebrows. I also think the Beatles' Sgt Pepper should've been included for its perfected crop of songs & still being the best selling studio album in the UK
I have so many probs with this list! First of all if any Kanye album is on here it should have been Dropout or Graduation. And how is Confessions all the way at 95!!!!??? Rob can u put together a quick list\video on underground non-mainstream artists. I would love to hear your recommendations cuz you actually value hip hop
Honestly I wasn’t mad at miseducation getting the top spot. It was a safe pick for them by how much it was loved and how it checks all boxes. One thing that drove this list clearly were accolades. The reason I like the miseducation pick is because the messages on that album. The substance. As great musically as thriller is, it it’s not a ton of substance on that album. Kind of turns back to dot vs drake. A lot of dot having so many more Grammys than Drake, in my opinion, is the substance in dot’s art. For some people like myself, substance and messaging really can take an album so much higher to me. But yea, it’s impossible to rank the 100 best albums. They got many people right on here I just don’t like how they highlighted the most critically acclaimed albums. Dark fantasy is at best Kanye’s third best album. 4 is beyonce best album to me. Shoutout to Prince, greatest of all time to me, glad to see him get two albums on the list. And lastly, I love astroworld but Travis Scott doesn’t have a top 100 album. Over Bruno mars 24k magic?
Yeah Bruno deserved a slot. I think Thriller , just with the themes of love. It’s substance. But Mike absolutely made songs about the state of the world in his career, just not really on thriller.
A genre-specific list proceeding the multi-genre list would have been nice to have, but in the end, "ain't no best...." Good jump-off for some new playlists tho...
Sade Love Deluxe is a classic! The lyrics the production of her band the mood/vibe they set and there’s an instrumental (Mermaid) that kills a lot of people’s songs by its self. For her to ranked 60 something and Billie and Taylor ranked higher is crazy to me. Top ten I’m not mad at though. Personally I think Bad is better than Thriller but obviously Thriller is the album that changed the world. The Miseducation is great and honestly not mad at the number one spot. When a real artist is really feeling life it will show in their music and this is clear. Surprised some heavy weights like Mariah and Whitney aren’t on the list. Also think The Weeknd should have been on there too. After Hours is a modern classic!
My missing albums when I first saw the list: Biggie - LAD Michael Jackson - Off The Wall EWF - That’s the Way of the World *R Kelly - 12 Play (I get why it wasn’t on there)
Blonde at five )) Never liked Lauren Hill album. Everyone loves it , not me 🫠 Fugees - is her peak in my humble opinion. Its a matter of taste 🕵️ Mj is a king 😎
I want to take into account that there's just too much music to make a fair list but MJ not being #1 is wild! Good for Lauryn Hill tho. I'm happy for her
A definitive 100 is just impossible. If you have Ready To Die, you have to have Life After Death. If you have low End Theory, you have to have Midnight Marauders. If you have SOS, you have to have CTRL. But if you give every artist 2 albums then the top 100 albums are only from 50 artists 😂
1. I understand why underground hip-hop didn't make the list but I personally would put Operation Doomsday or Below the Heavens on the list for underground hip-hop representation 2. Am I the only one surprised to not see any Elvis or Frank Sinatra. 3. No lie, I definitely feel like a Video Game Soundtrack or movie soundtrack should make the list and I nominate Minecraft 4. Am I crazy for thinking 2014 Forest Hills and Blacker on Both Sides should be here? 5. I don't think I saw any Paramore so I'd definitely put their All We Know Is Falling on the list but I get it, it's too niche for this list
also, it’s crazy to say life after death was bigs peak cause looking at it from a bigger picture he was nowhere near his peak, he was just getting started.
I don’t look to these lists to affirm any opinions. They’re meant to create dialogue. I don’t agree with A LOT of the album placements but I will say if you don’t like it, make your own list!
Astroworld being on this list is nuts. SOS being on this list is also nuts...I would’ve put 808s & Heartbreak or Graduation on the list over MBDTF. There’s no Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake, and a slew of other waaaaaaaay better albums/artists that could’ve been on this list man. SMH.
A list is set by criteria, we never see the criteria. So, their list is just their preference. Their opinion, let it be.impact = marketing = $$$ so impact = popularity. NOT THE BEST BUT MOST POPULAIR.
My biggest complaints was it shoulda been TBAP instead of GKMC and tha Carter 3 shoulda been on there somewhere even tho I like Tha Carter 2 more it's not about personal preference I think it's about impact as a whole
Mind you!! Thriller starts off with Wanna be Startin something! Ayo that’s 6 mins! Shout out Doug E. Fresh. Of pure jam. You long whined by the time you get to Baby Be Mine. Number 2!?!!?!?! If we talking the times I get it. But I’m going Thriller number one all the way.
If I had to guess, ILLMATIC probably didn’t receive as much love from the non hip hop purists voters . That’s probably why Miseducation, GKMC and Blueprint rank higher
Sorry Rob i’ll clarify- it would be cool to have your takes on podcast platforms to listen to on the go- was wondering if you had cobsidered uploading the audio of your youtube videos as (non)podcasts to apple podcasts, spotify etc?
The complete disrespect of southern hip hop is the biggest flaw of this list. Only 1 southern hip hop album on the list shows how southern hip hop is still unappreciated by the people on both coast that control most media
I gotta think for a second lol. But 50 Cent is the Future, So Far Gone, Kush and OJ Dedication 2 and maaaaybe Friday Night Lights off the top. No specific order
We might as well start calling these segments “Just my thoughts, not a podcast by Markman” My main critique is that this list is too much English language music focused and that Triller should have been #1
Miseducation is one of my favorite albums ever, but Thriller has to top it though. Off The Wall and Bad should also be on the list. MJ should be the one person on there 3 times. Illmatic should be higher and Confessions ranking lower than Blonde is egregious.
It depends on the methodology. You could pick the 10 best albums (whatever that means from 10 different genres the last 10 decades and there you go, but I don't know if 10 genres even existed in the 1920s.
But how can you say that Apple is saying Good Kid Mad City is the best hip hop album of all time when Miseducation is #1 on the list and it's a hip hop album. So wouldn't that mean Miseducation would be considered the best hip hop album of all time by apple's standards?
As far as good kid being the best hip-hop album based on this list, the way I looked at it is they're saying what albums are the best overall, Not so much just based on hip-hop criteria, I'm sure if it was a best hip-hop albums of all time list, good kid would not be number one to them... if that makes sense
Let’s also make it a thing if you part of the culture GKMC isn’t the greatest rap album of all time and it’s one of my favorite. My G Hov would tell u Blueprint shouldn’t be in front of Illmatic
Thriller's like the all time best selling album. I get that it's of all time but....N.E.R.D. The Weeknd, Kehlani, DMX, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Vince Staples, Common and The roots didn't make the cut. That's nuts.
There is really no point in formulating a list, apart from to generate clicks or for one's own personal satisfaction - because music is so subjective and nuanced by infinite factors. For example, I'm from the UK and The Streets' 2nd album A Grand Don't Come For Free, is so quintessentially British and perfectly captures an essence of working class life here. It is 100% in my top 100 but 90% of y'all across the pond won't have even heard of it: so why make a list except for yourself?
Tbf another reason to make a list is to generate conversation in the community I suppose. But does it remain conversation or escalate in to argument and division?
The list was immediately trash from the jump when they put Confessions at 95. Lists don't truly matter because like you said music is subjective but it is fun to just argue for no reason. Btw Thriller is the best album of all time 😂
List is terrible.... Marvin Gaye's What's Going On is the greatest album ever recorded. Wrong 2Pac album on the list, Me Against The World and Makaveli are his best bodies of work. The Beatles Revolver and Sgt. pepper are better or on par with Abbey Road smh...Love the conversation Rob 💯
I think they wanted to rep all cultures too. A woman #1 gay person in top 10. Im sure if a decent trans artist came out with an album that did ok they would put it top 10.
