I'm from Faenza, the hometown of Minardi. Its founder, Gian Carlo Minardi, is a very renowned figure in our community. His first business was being a car dealer with his father for Fiat, but he always loved racing. After piloting and working in "minor" sport series, he joined F1 in 1985. Despite what a bottomless money pit his F1 venture turned out to be, he was just determined to go on and on, and so he did almost till today. Minardi was bought by Red Bull in 2005, renamed "Toro Rosso" ("Red bull" in Italian), and the rest is history. After that, he became a sport commenter and after that, now he is the CEO of Formula Imola, the business that manages Imola's F1 circuit. what a story...
The dedication the whole team had every race weekend is why I have massive respect for Minardi. They knew they were hardly going to score points but turned up and gave it 100% no matter what. Gian Carlo loved racing and it was demonstrated through the team itself.
As a Minardi fan, I'm interested in visiting the Minardi Historic Day in Imola next year and I'm super looking forward to seeing some of these names and people there. Massive respect for Mr. Minardi!
My main bass when I play live, My number 1 instrument, is adorned with the minardi griffon. As a tribute and token to remind me to show up and give it all regardless of how hopeless the gig is.
That orange livery remains one of the most gorgeous liveries in F1 history. What a beauty it was. Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention one of the main reasons Arrows went bankrupt: the infamous Nigerian prince.
@@fabriciorosso9807 If you want detailed story, there's a video on RU-vid explaining it, but basically - Arrows's boss made a partnership with shady businessman who claimed that he is Nigerian prince. However, "Prince" bailed out after 2 years without providing demanded sponsorship money which financially crippled the team.
@@Jorge.Painkiller if they develop it that car might actually be a regular point scorer. It was genuinely faster than 2007 Honda on the average basis. Honda make a crucial design mistake in 2007 and 2008. They should have developed their car based on the 2006 car
@@rockzs74r if you want to call the single win of the entire BAR era a winning car, then ok. But that 06 Hungaroring was def a one off. BAR never really got back to where they were before being penalized for the double fuel tank.
I always had a soft spot for Arrows always being open to game developers helping in any way to let them use facilities to make some of the best F1 games at the time
As a Frentzen fan, the A23 has a special place in my heart and I'm always fascinated at how much of a career this car has got. Lots of minnow teams, but they're all super likeable in their efforts to compete in the higher echelon of F1
Arrows still holds the infamous title of most GPs without a win, even if Minardi came close to that amount before being purchased by RedBull. On the other hand Minardi has most GPs (340) without a podium finish, Haas is getting closer with every single race held nowadays.
I purchased an SGI workstation that was sold by Arrows liquidators. It had the car on it and the software. However, I did not have the license for the software. I had a housemate that needed to borrow a USB thumb drive. He only had it for two minutes - I think it was for his X Box - and when he returned it, the virus he had managed to get on it nuked my workstation. I lost the car before I could shut down the PC. In watching this I noted the 'sgi' logo on the front of the car - a detail I had not noticed before! Thanks for the video and bringing that detail to my attention.
Hands down my favorite F1 car and livery, such an awesome history. Side note, all three teams that used the Leafield Technical Center went bankrupt mid-season- Arrows, Super Aguri and Caterham. Some cool/sad videos of the building being used by Caterham and toured by urban explorers on YT.
I think you were a bit harsh on Tom Walkinshaw: Damon Hill was well in control of the 97 Hungarian GP and would have won a fairytale victory but for a last-minute technical glitch allowing Villeneuve through and heartbreak for the team.
Arrows weren't the absolute worse team on the grid. They had great liveries but got screwed over bad by the T-minus drama. The 90s Arrows teams were, in whatever guise they were in, reliable for points and a lot of good running and punching above their weight. Plus that 98-99 livery set was great.
“…got screwed over by the t-minus drama…”. 😂 Poetic justice I’d say! Tom Walkinshaw the ever deadbeat grifter got a taste of his own medicine from the “African prince”. Walkinshaw aspired to be Flavio Briatore but wasn’t as cunning.
@@paulsontag9233 sooo ... a guy that pushes a team through with his own money is a dead beat and an African "prince" that bought fame by paying jack shit and there by screwing over an entire company of HUNDREDS of employees is a hero .... weird way to look at things.
@@paulsontag9233 because all other businessman are the head-figure of pious and clean dealings? businessman do shit to make money and that will take most of them in to the shady side of existence. you show me a self made millionaire and I'll show you a person that was HAD to make decisions that negatively impacted other people.
Verstappen and Red Bull... Oh, I do like the livery of the orange F1 car when I was little but I didn't know that it was driven by the father of Max Verstappen... Interesting!
The financial bedlam in which Arrows got itself into at the turn of the millenium was this: Shortly before the start of the 1999 season Malik Ado Ibrahim, a 'prince' from Nigeria, bought 25% of the team with promise to find sufficient funding that would not only help car development, but also the development of the Arrows V10 (which in reality was a design by Brian Hart's workshop for 1997 until TWR bought Brian Hart Ltd. outright). Thus the infamous T-minus brand, which appeared on the sidepods, was born. When the promised "money" never came the quote on quote 'prince' vanished from the paddock and Jackie Oliver sold whatever shares he remained. As if he was asking for more trouble, rather than doing the sensible thing and sell part of the team (or the entire thing lock, stock and barrel) to a more credible investor than the Nigerian 'prince', Walkinshaw reached out to equity firm Morgan Grenfell which didn't end well when they were asking "Where's my money?".
I somehow like the BOSS series. Knowing those cars from the years I was a child still driving is somehow satisfying even if the most are the slower ones
Just goes to show how a great sponsorship deal can make a team iconic. Arrows was before my time and i knew very little of the history shown here but I recognised the orange livery immediately
$85k for a relatively recent F1 car?! A real fucking F1 car for $85k?! I always figured even a shitty used F1 car would sell for at least a million. But now that I know, I'm gonna start fucking saving up.
Years ago one of the British TV shopping channels had a Jordan F1 night. Mostly just bits, but they did have a complete car (minus the engine) for sale. They wanted a lot less than that, not sure how much an engine would cost, there must be a lot of DFVs out there that could be made to fit.
@@paulqueripel3493yeah there are basic engines you can fit in these kind of cars. A guy at my track has an old Andretti IndyCar and a 1995 Williams car he purchased as a rolling chassis and bought a cosworth v8 meant for endurance lmp cars and he drives it with that. And it is reliable
This channel and its endlessly fascinating insights into the sports history. Loving it! Been an F1 geek since '99 but still discovering all sorts of things here.
Just found this channel and immediately subbed. Loved the vlog. Content and quality of information is exceptional. Look forward to going back through your channel to watch. Cheers 👍
Could you do an entire history of Toyota in f1. They're one of my favourite midtable teams and had arguably one of the best liveries in f1 period. Also with how well they're doing in wec would be interesting to see if they'd do should they ever come back to f1
@@paulsontag9233 Definitely and they in my opinion, could definitely do some damage if they where to join f1 now, the level of success they've had with a v6 hybrid especially a very well engineered and reliable bit of kit in WEC if they came back I think they'd be trouble to the top 3.
Had this on my list of things to watch. First time viewing a video on this channel. Automatic subscription. Awesome work with some genuine insights I didn't already know!
The Arrows A23 has been passed around more than a blunt at a rap concert. I hope the poor car can finally rest peacefully with the history and mileage it did.
So sad Tom Wakinshaw was a legend in sports cars and other racing. F1 just never worked for him. Still legend status as race team owner/leader and a pure racer at heart
Arrows was a way better team than youre giving them credit for. Your whole tone throughout the clip was that they were useless. They pretty much scored points every season.
With a better no 2 driver than Bernoldi, more development and money, this car might've gone places. In the end, just 3 points for a very neat design is sad
Remember Bernoldi came with the Red Bull money he was Dietrich and Marko’s protege at the time. They pulled the Red Bull money from Sauber because they wanted to sign Raikkonen over him for 2001. De la Rosa was dropped just before the season because of this.
The A23 was also developed for Verstappen, he was dropped when Frentzen became available and instead of a salary he was paid on a race by race basis which freed up cashflow. Ironically Verstappen suing was the straw that broke the camels back.
Idk why but I have always had interest in smaller teams like these. I think it is because they get overlooked for the most part but some of these teams created a car to run with Pennie’s considering what the sport costs
I always had a soft spot for this car! I don't know why because it broke down every five minutes. Who knows why? I just liked the look of it & had a lot of love for Arrows!
@@PeterBrookF1 It is interesting that the og one was the fastest, but I guess it makes sense that the sa05 is the slowest du to having a less powerfull engine
11:22 never in my life did I imagine hearing the name of Frits van Eerd in a Peter Brook video😅 He indeed was a racing (mostly rally) driver but is now must famous in the Netherlands as former CEO of Jumbo, one of the biggest supermarkets in the country, but is now on trial for corruption and money laundering during his time as CEO
Hi pass filter.. The mic has not got a really good pop filter and the signal has not been hipassed The result is that every plosive will produce a pulse that any speaker capable of producing decent low end will produce that pulse. Imagine someone saying "P" right to your ear... you can feel the puff of air and it can even be painful. That is the power of plosives.
The only fact that i don't know from this car is the fact that Marussia also buy this car! For the rest, I already know since long time. #RamadanKareem2024 28/03/2024 20:04 Or 08:04 PM At My Local Time.
