It goes without saying that Ferrari have been having a bit of a hard time as of late. It has been 15 years since the longest running and most successful team in Formula 1 history have won the Constructors’ Championship, and 16 years since they have won the Drivers' Championship. In that time, they have remained consistently competitive, and have won lots of races, but have only had brief periods of dominance and have never been able to sustain Championship challenges against Red Bull and Mercedes, despite having had top-tier driver line-ups for near-on 30 years now. 2017 onwards has been especially sordid, as three times they have taken early leads in the standings, only for their campaigns to collapse under them, partly due to reliability and driver error, but more often than not because of substandard race strategies. In 2023, things are really not looking good, as they are making all of the same strategy errors as in 2022, but the car is no longer anywhere near fast enough to challenge for race wins. Their target this year was 1st in the Constructors’ Championship, and they’re currently looking at 4th. As bad as things are, however, they could be so much worse; and indeed, they have been. Time to rewind the clock 50 years.

When I was a kid, my uncle gave me his old sticker album centered around 1980 season upon finding out that I love F1. Album included pictures of all drivers, teams, tracks and race results, as well as names of all champions and race winners (minus Indy 500 winners). Even back as a kid, I found Ferrari's results shocking, given that they were champions previous year. Plus, I first saw it in time when Schumacher and Ferrari were ruling F1, so idea that Ferrari could be bad was hard for me to grasp (I really was a naive fool that knew nothing back then). That album was what got me into F1's history and I still keep it in my room to this day. Great video, thumbs up. 👍

I completely understand being naive about "How can ferrari be THIS bad?" not only because of how mercedes is performing currently, but also, their the single LONGEST running team alive even way back in the 60's. You'd expect them to have so much experience their going to always find a solution on problems, but no. Its the opposite.

Great video as always. Just wanted to point out a pretty important detail about the Lauda retirement at Fuji (given that the story is true). In a brilliant Beyond the Grid podcast episode, Daniele Audetto, Ferrari team manager in 1976 said that the decision to withdraw from the race was made before the start. Bernie Ecclestone convinced Niki, James Hunt and Emerson Fittipaldi to agree to legally start the race, afraid that refusing to do so would lose f1 a ton of money. And he said that they can withdraw after a couple of laps which Hunt admittedely agreed to. James was then pressed by Teddy Mayer and Alastair Caldwell that he has to finish the race, so he decided that he will finish it and Lauda didn't know that. The story is also presented in Maurice Hamilton's biography of Niki Lauda. It was omitted in the Rush movie and i think that's the reason not many people know about it.

Villeneuve's crash at Argentina was caused by a suspension failure, if you watch closely you can see the wheel turn the opposite way to the direction the car was going, and his struggles at the first half of 1978 was caused by him being unfamiliar with the Michelin radial tyres, which regularly caused problems for him. Call me a fanboy all you want.

Ferraris downfall began when they became a huge company, and let business meddle with their racing... They started caring more about image and company politics and and less about winning... The only times the team have been trully successful after the 60s, was with Lauda and Schumacher, when the participants in the racing team took matter in their own hands

@@Jorge.Painkiller That was fairly typical of the time, unfortunately. It just all happened at Ferrari that year but it could easily have happened somewhere else. It was not the result of cutting corners. When Dr Harvey Postlethwaite moved to Ferrari in 1981, he knew that carbon fibre was the solution to their problems. He also knew they weren’t ready for it so a bonded aluminium-Nomex honeycomb chassis was built by Hexel in Belgium. The basic chassis was quite good and the mid-season upgrade to a pull rod front end turned it into an absolute weapon. A carbon chassis - which, from memory, only McLaren, ATS, Alfa Romeo and Lotus* had - would likely have made Pironi’s accident less severe and Villeneuve’s potentially survivable. Of all the measures taken to improve safety, it is ironic that carbon fibre, which was introduced for different reasons, has done more to save lives than any other factor. Ferrari crushed it in 1982. They ended the season having run only one car at six races and not starting at all at two of them, out of a total of 16 races. They also ended the season with a totally different driver lineup from what they started with. *Lotus used bonded panels of carbon, while the others used unitary construction, baked in an autoclave.

Villeneuve was trying to be the fastest guy out there and it’s my belief that his status had made him lazy, a situation Ferrari had done nothing to prevent. Villeneuve needed what Pironi had in his first two years: Ken Tyrrell. Without proper mentoring, he could never be World Champion.

Ferrari's Le Mans win was more of an AF Corse (one of the longest associated with the "prancing horse" teams) win than a Ferrari one. It just shows you how inept Ferrari is at management - a far cry from the Todt-Brawn-Schumacher days, when it was like a well oiled machine. I personally blame Luca di Montezemolo for the state Ferrari is in now

Ferrari was more or less irrelevant in my childhood, aside from Prost challenging for the championship in 1990. I remember it being a huge achievement when Berger put Ferrari back on the top step of a podium with his win at Hockenheim '94 after 4+ years without even a race win. And then I was in high school by the time Schumacher netted them a driver's championship. So I definitely haven't forgotten about Ferrari's struggles that started in the early '80s...it was the world I was born into and the first order of things in F1 that I encountered.

Fun fact: the car shown around 13:10 is not the 126CK, but the experimental 126CX. It had a belt-driven 'Comprex' pressure wave supercharger which used the exhaust pulses to compress the intake air. Villleneuve and new teammate Didier Pironi loved the instant throttle response of the system, but the mixing of exhaust gases and intake air in the supercharger, high running temperatures and less peak power made Ferrari go with the twin KKK turbo version. A planned twin Comprex design was never built and the car never raced in anger.

I remember those days for Ferrari. I was at the Long Beach Grand Prix in 1979 and would continue through 1983. For some reason Ferrari just cannot keep good people in the right positions. I'm really not a Ferrari fan but was glad the #51 Ferrari win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I have been sick of watching Toyota win every year with no competition. I found it refreshing to see Ferrari on pole and Toyota in the second row.

I've seen the comparison made made before, but I still think that Leclarc and Villeneuve share many similarities and specifically raw pace even if a little error prone. Its also interesting that they raced in both competative and uncompetitive Ferrari's. Great video.

The signs were there already in the second half of 1979. The Ferrari documentary calls the 312T5 of 1980 "A boxer too far." Real shame Scheckter was lambasted and made the scapegoat, he probably had 5-6 good years left in him.

This was basically pretty good but in technical terms, it leaves almost half the chassis story out. The 312T3 was the last chassis to feature side tanks before the semi ground effect T4. What is not commonly realised is that the chassis was basically the same but with the side tanks sawn off and the new tank behind the driver. The effect on chassis rigidity was enormous. The 1970s triangular cross sections were ver rigid and masked the relatively minor inadequacies of a space frame chassis in comparison with a monocoque. By late 1979 the spaceframe was history. They had to beef it up considerably to make it more rigid but it was nowhere near as stiff as the Williams, despite being considerably heavier. Yet this was basically the same chassis they persisted with until the end of 1981. The Ferrari by that stage might have been a full ground effect car but it produced a fraction of the downforce of the rest of the field. That meant it could barely get enough heat into the tyres. This wasn’t as much of a problem at Monaco but at circuits like Silverstone it was a major problem. It didn’t change until the 126C2 which was Ferrari’s first monocoque.

8:30 This is something of an internet myth. Team orders did not exist then the way they do today so there is always a certain amount of anachronism in this kind of comment. Secondly - and absolutely everyone forgets this - Ferrari himself would have liked nothing better than to have two Ferraris dicing at the front of the field at Monza, despite the risks. These were the sorts of games he played, despite the obvious risk. He played his drivers off against each other and this is one of the reasons why they did not win more championships. The curse continues to this day. Finally, there is the false assumption that Villeneuve could have just driven past Scheckter and cruised to a win and championship victory. This is arguably the silliest of all propositions because it assumes that Scheckter could have done nothing about it, presumably because of Villeneuve’s blinding speed. But it ignores the fact that we’re talking about Jody Scheckter here, who was far from slow and every bit the competitor Villeneuve was. He was never going to surrender without a fight. I think most of this comes from Nigel Roebuck’s writings which are unmistakably partisan because he and Villeneuve were close friends. Quite a lot of Roebuck’s stories about Villeneuve have since been discounted by more independent writers who have balanced their work with other reliable sources of information. This became the pony to which the conspiracy theorists hitched their wagons to after the 1982 San Marino race.

I haven't forgotten. As a matter of fact whenever I hear Tifosi complain about the " downfall" of Ferrari since 2007 I remind them there wasn't a downfall at all. Rather the good years with Schumi and Kimi were a fluke; an exception to the rule. Ferrari been mediocre in the 20 years prior to Schumi's first championship with them in 2000, and have been since Kimi got his championship with them in 2007.

I'm mildly obsessed by the ground effect era and the 1980 season in particular so I'm very familiar with Ferrari's '80 season. Not only was the the T5 lacking in downforce, the Flat 12 was at the end of its development potential so became unreliable. Perhaps the most overlooked aspect of their season was their Michelin tyres. Renault had excellent downforce so needed a relatively hard tyre. Ferrari couldn't generate heat so well so ended up qualifying badly and wearing their Michelins in quick order in most races. Jody was all about the World Championship so after he'd won it, he was happy go get out if F1 alive and in one piece. Perhaps the biggest effect of Ferrari's terrible 1980 was Jody's and Gilles' influence in getting sliding skirts banned. Their experience of a skirted car was so bad they made a lot of noise which suited both Ferrari and FISA.

The Ferrari car now is awesome and it's supposed to chase the Red Bulls better than what Mercedes was doing but the strategy of the Scuderia Ferrari F1 team were soo tragic that it made the Chinese Civil War looked like a child's play. The strategists definitely need to get their heads out of donkey's asses and better yet, get the teams handling the Le Mans win over to F1 and either replace the entire team or teach the F1 team on how to properly formulate plans and pit stops.

Arguably, Braham's decline between the 1967 and 1968 seasons was worse than Ferrari's decline between 1979 and 1980. Initially, it appears that Ferrari had a greater fall from grace but that is because of changes in the scoring systems. Prior to 1979, only the best placed car from each manufacturer scored points and even then, each race wasn't counted. If we apply the 1979-1980 constructors rules and average the points on a per race basis (because the number of races contested in each of the four seasons was different), the Braham team scored 9.00 points per race in 1967 (when they won the Drivers and Constructors Championship) but only 0.83 points per race in 1968. In comparison, Ferrari scored 7.53 point per race in 1979 and 0.57 points per race in 1980. Braham's drop of 8.17 points per race is greater than the 6.96 points per race drop of Ferrari.

That's mostly down to the experience AF Corse has in sportscar and endurance racing, rather than anything to do with Ferrari proper. And the 499P Hypercar is not 100% Ferrari either - Dallara has some input as well.

Saying the 312T is the most successful car of all time is absurd, your grouping several cars together as one car. the 2 contenders for most successful car are McLaren MP4/2 (22 race victories, 3 Drivers Championships, 2 Constructors Championships) Lotus 72 (20 race Victories, 3 Constructors Championships, 2 Drivers Championships) the 312T didn't even start 20 Races let alone win that many. Before it was replaced with the 312T2. Between the 312t and 312T5 the only bits that are relatively compatible are the engine and gearbox, its like grouping every Cosworth DFV engine car together as one car, completely ridiculous

1. It was Lewis Hamilton who led the point standings almost the entire 2007 season - and the includes being first in points heading to the Brazilian GP. Alonso's shenanigans still couldn't win him a title - and he hasn't since. 2. Hamilton's/McLaren's blunder of keeping him out with worn tires at the Chinese GP made him spin out in the pit entry and that combined with the rookie error of pressing the pit-speed limiter doomed Hamilton's rookie title. What part did Alonso have in this? 3. Kimi might have been a fluke... but... considering mechanical errors in 5 races he was *leading* robbed him of both the 2003 and 2005 titles this stroke of luck was *well deserved* When one has had some serious bad luck before it evens out in the end... Btw, Kimi still won 6 races, and Hamilton and Alonso 4 each. The fact remains Kimi was the only rookie season Ferrari champion aside from Fangio and Scheckter.

As a ferrari fan, there were only a few seasons in the 2010s when they were competitive. The 2020s look even rougher. Could be always worse, just ask Williams...
