Paul Franklin describes how his passions for science and art collide when creating special effects for films.
Paul Franklin has been creating spectacular visual effects for over 25 years. Co-founder of Double Negative Visual Effects - one of the world’s leading digital visual effects studios - Paul is perhaps best known for his long-running collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. Paul’s work has featured in more than thirty films including “Inception” and “Interstellar”, both of which brought him Oscars for Best Visual Effects. Coming from a Fine Arts background Paul has also maintained a life-long interest in science.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I love when attention to detail like this is put into visual effects.

A TEDx talk that is just about Technology and Design and not how to use it to push a political or ideological agenda, I love it!

Interstellar shouldn't be an exception, it should be a rule. Instead of bullshiting people about things we truely know about, science should be respected. The world is swarming with people with master degrees and phds in every computational and theoretical science imaginable, and I never heard about a single one of them that wouldn't be ready to help promote science to the public.

I believe. Nolan is the king of kings. And Double Negative are so brilliant.

There's nothing 'special' about effects, every movie over-uses them so they are just cliches. All the effects in Interstellar were rendered totally pointless attempts at realism when the end of the movie hinged on the outrageously absurd notion that the only thing that can escape a black hole's gravity is human 'love'. This ruined the whole movie and made it more ridiculous than any Disney cartoon.

Thank you so much for saying that. Absolutely, i don't think Hollywood can create a movie based on the reality because science does not support the emotional crap they are used to peddling. The movie would never have been such a hit if they did so. Also, renders this whole talk is mundane.

You really need an understanding of physics to understand Interstellar. Read Kip Thorne's book about the science of the film, explains all.
