I’ve heard all my life that many Brits don’t think Americans can get their humor. I wonder where this attitude comes from? Maybe it’s because Brits are fond of making fun of us Yanks. I found that out through visiting London when the tour guides had so many jokes about us - so funny! I think Ricky Gervais is the funniest man on the planet.

Love "British humor" but hated Russel at first. I've since developed real respect and appreciation for him and his talent.

We love ‘banter’ so making fun of each other. I think the attitude of wondering whether Americans understand our humour as on tv and films the humour is just soooo different. Which I love! I love humour in all forms it comes in.

Well I don’t know every Brit, but I do know that whilst he can be divisive, there are an AWFUL lot who frickin’ love him. I’m a massive fan of comedy and I’ve seen several comedians live. His “Messiah Complex” was not only one of the funniest and best presented comedies I’ve ever seen (up there with the recent “Sticks and Stones”), it is a cerebral and philosophical masterclass. (With a LOT of swearing and almost embarrasing vulgarity too)

Then, when they do, you are able to respond with your own thoughts. You don't need to have written a master's thesis on something to know reality. You don't need a meteorologist degree to know the weather, you don't need a medical degree to know when you're ill, etc. People can read up on subjects and have a working knowledge of things. People can actively listen, and can provide a counterpoint to what was just said. They know bs when they hear it. Active listening is an important skill. Too many people aren't listening. They are waiting for the other person to finish speaking, so that they can have their say/argue their point. They are too busy wanting to be heard, that they don't hear. You can't learn the other person's viewpoint, if you're not actively listening to what they're saying. The thing is, there are experts on the other side of the spectrum who are saying things that people don't want to hear. Yet, they are ignored by the masses, and shut down by the media. How are they any different from the other experts in the field? If someone isn't knowledgeable about a topic, then they don't know enough to say they aren't. Wouldn't it be a bit hypocritical to shut out their voices, simply because you don't like their message? After all, if you don't know anything about the topic, you can't say they're wrong. Don't forget that those who say they have an agenda, have an agenda themselves. I tend to not take weather advice from multimillionaires who fly private jets all over the world, and back to their beachfront mansions with their SUVs parked in their garages. All while being protected by guards armed with *those* weapons. They are the biggest hypocrites of them all.

I was thinking the same thing! I am also one to pay even more attention and basically challenge people with my body language so as to say "I know what you're doing. Do you really intend on keep going?". I believe it's got to do with what we feel most comfortable in doing or what kind of "teaser" the person is. The more cowardly type (which I'd say is the most common) with which our tactic works, or the other type that needs this "don't feed the troll" response.

If you watch Robert Downey Jnr in interviews he does exactly that to great effect.

It's possible she was offended by the impoliteness at first but was won over by the overwhelming comedy and truth of the situation. She had a social expectation to be given the space to tell her story, but couldn't help laughing when her anecdote was reduced to its essence. By the end of the exchange I think she knew, and didn't take herself so seriously as to be genuinely upset that he overrode her story. I'd be uncomfortable in that I'd know I wasn't as funny or entertaining as Russell, but entertainment is the name of the game. I think, in the name of humour, his impertinence was forgivable. Would anyone get away with that? With less inspired people in a non-entertainment setting, maybe not. Charisma on Command pointed out that it didn't touch her core identity, which is critical. If someone were to be super upset in that situation, I'd say they were insecure and take themselves too seriously. They could have a lot of fun pushing back and saying they were robbed of their story, or challenging the other person to tell a better tale.
