Rational, well spoken, fan of comedy, fan of The Beatles, knowledge of The Beatles' development and philosophical. Good Sir, I would like a pint with you.
Stand-up is meant to be the unpretentious art from, and yet people insist on forming this bubble of snobbery around it. Just like what you like, and leave the rest of it alone. It's not as if it can only exist in one form at a time. There's room for so many different types of comedians, and formats of shows. It's really just infinite variety. You can't be snobby about that, or you're literally limiting the whole craft.
correct, no wrong way to make any art. like bruce lee said, we have to flow like water. I beleive we can apply any style possible, all depending on the place, people, moment.
Exactly. Also, you could argue that Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks step out of comedy because some of their political stuff is not purely for the purpose of making people laugh but it's still funny and has a message which is, in my opinion at least, a lot more than you can say about Jim Davidson. What I thought was nice about this show is it shows how different people's ideas of what stand up is are.
i thought it was such a good point that i kind of borrowed it and reworded it for my essay about comedy! xD i think my uni teachers have a dehumanizing academic view of things which should come from a very personal place. whether its music or comedy, it shouldn't "have" to have a reason and a deep contextual meaning.
If you guys like this documentary (minus all the snobbery), I highly recommend Jimmy Carr's book "The Naked Jape". A real celebration of stand-up, as well as being a jokebook and an in depth analysis of the history, themes and theories that make it what it is today.
"Unforgivable" for Ben Elton to focus his satire on political absurdities and forget his "dramatic purpose". Bit short sighted. Comedy has a key role in intelligently examining and, if necessary, ridiculing politics, news reporting, corrupt business practice etc cf John Oliver
I respectfully disagree with the last statement you made. I for one hate it when I can't go to the theaters anymore because I can't even watch a fucking children's play without some obligatory nudity. There ARE wrong ways of doing art, and that is art without dignity.
It's not the similarities but the cognitive dissidence he's taken about. The guy called him out on his "homophobic, racist" comments, but then went on to mock a stereotype about the Swedes. It's the fact the guy claimed a moral high ground to judge Jim, despite him doing the same to someone else. And even at that, Jim was paraphrasing what the guy called himself.
I don't like the notion that there is a 'way' to do comedy. That guy at the end, being all 'you've gotten away from comedy' - but you can say that about any art. That's like saying The Beatles later, experimental stuff isn't as valid as the earlier poppier stuff because, if it's not catchy, it's not real music. It's like, art can be anything. Just because you don't have the patience for it, doesn't mean it's being approached in a wrong way. There is no wrong way to make any art.
WHY the fuck are they spending so GD much time on bloody Jim Davidson????! There are SO MANY examples of good, ARTFUL comedy... Good thing this isn't called "The Art of Stand Up". Hey Zeus! Move ON!!!
There isn't only one way - there's lots of ways, but there must be a method behind it. There certainly are 'wrong ways' to do it. The ones that make nobody laugh for instance. The idea that art is just thoughtlessly tossing ideas out unprocessed is both lazy and foolish.
Ha, feel free! I hope you 'stick it to the man', as it were. Yeah, I hate that kind of conventional nature about it. Sucks all the joy and enthusiasm for creation and just turns it into a chore. Eventually it just becomes as fun as doing taxes. Fuck those goiz. Do what you want. LIVE YOUR DREAMS.
You are just saying what you'd heard. Read the Bible, bro. Specifically read the book of Acts Chapter 9, read it completely and you'll see there's only 1 Body of Christ... I don't believe you'll understand, this is something spiritual, but Christ and the Church are one in the same through the Holy Spirit, just read the Bible, P.S. (don't believe everything you hear, believe in the Bible).
"Eh, earth to Meekus, I know!" Listen, you're only on part 4, I'll forgive your enthusiasm - when you get to the end you'll realise what a piece of shit this documentary is. The nature of comedy is humour - my chartered accountant father has more humour than that lifeless "comedy tutor". And my father's dead!
