My favorite scene from a Pogo book: The three bats are hanging from a limb. One say's. 'What sort of critters is we?' The second one say's, 'We's bats.' the first one says, 'I know that, but what sort of critters is we?'

As a dedicated Pogophile since the mid 1980s this is a most welcome look into Kelly's Modus Operandi at the drawing board. And looking at our marsupial hero just now I finally see some real affinity in the facial characteristics of both possum and creator. All the swamp critturs are the ne plus ultra of 'funny animal' expression and design IMHO with very few exceptions(Wiley Catt comes to mind).

My favorite comic artist too. There is almost no other linework that sits above for me and I love all kinds of linework.

Especially his later work is astounding. So much detail in the backgrounds and a wide variety of ink strokes.

Very nice video showing how to get that linework with that brush setting. I was a cartoonist my whole life, and I started out using a W&N Series 7 brush and Pelican ink because that was the way all the greats did it. I eventually created a brush in Adobe Illustrator that mimicked the way I did it with ink (after I could no longer find good ink). You can tell with him the shape of every line was important. That was my goal also, but I do have to admit that as I got older, it was easier to get that line with the computer program.. maybe because I could delete it immediately and try again until it was perfect. lol

Well done! Lots of fun watching you get the most out of that drawing pen/brush. I started reading Pogo in the 60s but never understood it till I was an adult.

I am now re reading all of the books and now with the political background and reading the dialogue out loud with a southern drawl, Pogo makes more sense.

@@StayfDraws For me, Kelly's line reached its zenith IMHO starting in 1968, about the time I started understanding his slant on what was what.

These video's are a revelation for me, i am super keen on gouache illustration and the famous artists of yesteryear , thank you , ' it must take you ages to put them together thank you ' do you know if these guys made their own paint or were there brands back in the day ?

In the fifties there were brands of Gouache. So they used it out of the tube.

ridiculous analysis, then why and how he uses the thick line would have been more interesting
@hockeyrd99

How could Walt Kelly's use of thick lines have been more interesting? The shape of every line was important, although it seems so natural with him.

Several of the here shown scans of original Kelly art were stolen from my website! This guy should be taken off from youtube. I will look for a spezialized lawyer to sue him!
