Learning from the Masters:Eyvind Earle Step-by-Step Tutorial
This is the brush set Stayf-Eyvind Earle for Procreate.
The brush set is available on Gumroad: gum.co/FPEuhg
Eyvind Earle
Eyvind Earle was a Disney artist who was the colorist and artdirector for Sleeping Beauty. He painted the backgrounds for Sleeping Beauty and some other Disney classics like Toot, Whistle, Plunk & Boom Lady & The Tramp and Peter Pan. Before and after his career at Disney he worked on his own art. Eyvind Earle is still a big inspiration to artist all around the world and you can see his influence in animation features like Pocahontas, Open Season, Frozen and the 2019 Netflix animation Klaus.
Eyvind Earle style
Eyvind Earle had a very distinct style, which is both very graphical and very detailed. He works with big shapes to set up the layouts for Sleeping Beauty and painted very detailed backgrounds. Each scene of Sleeping Beauty is an artwork on his own. Each painting would take 5 to 10 days to complete. I hope you could paint a lot faster than that with the Stayf-Eyvind Earle BrushSet I created for Procreate.
Eyvind Earle Tutorials
Fortunately there are some tutorials by Eyvind Earle from the documentary ‘Four Artists Paint 1 Tree’, that was released one April 30 1958 as a segment of the Disneyland TV episode 1958 to promote Sleeping Beauty. Here Eyvind Earle explains his way of painting and what he is looking for in painting a tree.
Sleeping Beauty Inspiration
Earle drew inspiration from the illuminated manuscript the ‘Très Riches Heures de Jean, Duc de Berry’, an opulent Book of Hours from 1419. Another inspiration were Medieval tapestries. In the late fifties animation artists were inspired by fine artists like Matisse, Cezanne, Klee, Modigliani and Picasso. It was a modern approach of painting. The innovative animation studio UPA was a trendsetter in making modern animation which drew inspiration from these artists. You could see the shift in style in advertisements and children books illustrators. The style became more graphical with painted structures. In 1953 the Disney Studios released the short animation ‘Toot, Whistle Plunk and Boom’ that won an Academy award. Eyvind Earle painted the backgrounds for this animation. The backgrounds of Sleeping Beauty were a mix of the Medieval paintings and the modern style of the Fifties.
Sleeping Beauty background.
In the same film he explains how he painted the backgrounds for Sleeping Beauty. Next to him is Disney Artist Walt Peregoy who later was the art director for the backgrounds of 101 Dalmatians. All of the artists had to learn how to paint in the style of Eyvind Earle. In this segment of ‘Four Artists Paint One Tree’ he explains how he builds up his painting.
Painting a bush step-by-stepThe paintings of Sleeping Beauty were done in gouache. Working from dark to light in an analogous color scheme

I often think I would give so much to see this painting up close. I saw this film when it first came out, and announced at age seven I wanted to become an artist for Disney. I did become an art teacher, and was thrilled to find this little film at the back of the sleeping beauty DVD set, and I showed it to my students - it inspired them, I think, as much as it did me. This I think, is what Disney wanted to pass on to young people more than anything else.

Thank you, for the enriching and inspiring tutorial. I have been admiring Eyvind Earle and Jean Girrard/Moebius' work for their imagination activating balance of detail and minimalism. It was great to understand how to bring it to life.

Excellent as always!! Thank-you for doing these!! I can't wait to see what future artists you might cover in such depth. You've assembled quite a collection of Eyvind Earle vids and tools for us to use and refer to. That "Awakening Beauty" book is really really expensive and you can only buy it used. So these videos you've carefully put together are the best substitute some folks will ever find, and the fact that it's based in Procreate is perfect!!! Thank-you again!!

Beautiful job, Stayf, as always. Thanks so much for such great information. I do have a question, however. You did such a great job on the tree. How do you know when you’ve done enough? Is that something that just comes from experience?
@StayfDraws
@StayfDraws 4 года назад
Hello Deborah, it is always difficult to know when to stop painting and when your painting is finished. The best way to decide that is to let it rest for a few days and then look at it again. If you are still satisfied with the painting then it is finished. But it is also experience! 😄

Hello Bruno, I have made a video review about a Eyvind Earle Book. You can see it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L5OnacoBX-o.html Unfortunately the book is only available second hand and is quiet expensive.

The tutorial is excellent. $15 though for a brush set? That sounds a bit steep... The *whole of Procreate* is only $9.99. 🤔

That main tree demo... you don't actually discuss the theory behind the mark making. Just adding lighter lines with tapering is an application technique. People need to understand that it's an attempt to imply form. Indeed, from there you just keep applying brush marks without using them to convey the form of the tree. In the end, the tree actually looks like hair. It has no volume to indicate it's a cylinder- no management of values to indicate the play of forms on it's surface. The bush demo worked much much better, as that process is really more graphical and less concerned with literal form interplay. It almost seems like you took the approach of the bush and used it for the tree trunk?

You make some more steps in the video than what you actually say with your words. Ive taken time and played this in 0.75 speed and paused. Ill write it down here for the rest of you. First draw black siluette WITH THE EYVIND TAPER. Then take the stayf eyvind leaves and go to dark blue in the dark grey area Then go back to eyvind taper still on the same color and add some hand drawn leaves After that use the eyvind bark with the same color as the step before Then take eyvind foliage flower DONT TAKE A GREENISH COLOR he used light blue ish color possibliy that it intercepts with green i dont remember. But its right sround that light blue area the brush chanhes the color automaticly so no need to chose 3 different blueish greens or anything. Then take stayf evind taper dry paint in some foliage of your own And also for some reason hand draw someevind foliage flowers here with this brush he also shifts slighlty between lightish blue colors here Over the foliage of your own take the taper brush and use a lighter color ontop of the handdrawn ones but not the evind flower hand drawn ones just your own. Then he still uses the taper and use a light greyish violett/purple and makes slme dots and handrawn foliage. So mr stayf thats allot more steps than what you said in thr video in the future it eould be super helpful if you said it all or showed with text on screen. And also your video was super fadt even whe slowed down I had to rewatch each step allot of times. Also Im really happy to have found this video and brush set because I really love sleeping beauty Ive alwyas wondered hoe to draw old disney backgrounds in procreate but havent found any guides untill I saw you. I would like for you to show how to draw a more in depth of snow white and also poccahontas! And aldo I wished your evind had some more foliage it was allot of hand drawing to be done.
