I disagree, the historical examples are those usually chosen in discussion of such matters (and subject to survivor bias) and there are few explained links to modern asymmetric warfare
@@simonmasters3295 Good point. While the video didn't mention any exceptions behind any sun tzu law, it still holds pretty good importance. The only problem with these laws are, are that appliable in most of the cases?
Generally i can agree, but when it comes to specifics, i got conflicting information. Im at the part of deception and they're taking the inflatable army as an example, but they didnt replace those with actual tanks and planes, that was a diversion indeed, but the intent was to fool the germans into believing they got an invading army ready. I got this info what i just shared from a series on ww1 and ww2. The World Wars, a recommendation if you're into 20th century histoy.
"No battle plans survives the contact with the enemy" is the most important lesson in life. You can plan, think and scheme all want, but very rarely does the enemy indulge.
But the insight gained during the planning is invaluable and could be what determines the victor. " _Plans_ are worthless, but _planning_ is everything” -Dwight D. Eisenhower
unless when your plan is that good that you don't need to consider the opponent. A pre-emptive/surprise attack is a nice example of this. Try to freeze your opponent. I am drawn to interpret that line as: don't let the enemy know your plans.
@@Gjoufi That's because vigilance is the ultimate deterent of conflict since no sane person attacks where and when the enemy is at their strongest. Thus if you are prepared for war you will have peace.
By "War", it means a conflict, and "winning" by whatever means. When you include the loss of your own assets and the ongoing acrimony a non confrontational way can be the way to go. Don't forget, this is a "guide" for leaders of state, who tend to have a lot more to lose.
I've read and do have the book myself..but, what the book doesn't tel you (and I never realized until this) that, for every lesson Sun Tzu teaches, there is a battle or historical example already set! I mean EVERY single one of them! That's astounding and it PROVES the timeline of just how far gone we really are now. That clock started counting down in 1948 when Israel became a nation again. Notice the technology. The bomb had just been used for the first time, two world wars killed millions Roswell got covered up. I mention Roswell because of that timing. It wasn't long after that the transistor came along. Then, masers, lasers, fiber optics, kevlar, space flight, stealth technology, etc, etc..the list is endless! Now? We have the internet, A.I. and the new tower of Babel - CERN, the most complex and largest machine EVER BUILT for atom smashing. There's SO much wire and cable at CERN that it could parallel Earth's orbit around the sun TWICE! TWICE!! Can you even picture that? All those spools. That's staggering. How much farther can we keep this up before something gives? God only knows - literally. What you see here is "the knowledge of good and evil" and a product of the original sin. That dawned on me one night when I first saw this video a few months back. There IS an art to violence and there's a certain wisdom that comes with a price. It took me over 50 years to realize this. With each year, it gets faster and faster and more distracting. Don't allow the world to deceive and distract you away from the truth. If you're younger, you'll see what I mean one day. If you're older like me, you KNOW exactly what I mean. Some things don't come from books or a computer. Some things only come with age and a day comes when you think to yourself: "Damn! Why didn't I see that before? It's been right in front of me all along!" No better place to hide something than 'in plain sight'. Wouldn't you agree?
Kinda ironic to quote McArthur... A guy who was losing the war early on, do to his disdain for plans and stock, calling it "defeatism" preferring haste maneuvering that got in besieged with no supplies.
Awesome video. I read the art of war when i was about 15 over a summer from high school. I somewhat understood parts of it but using good clear examples really helps the ideas take shape.
Morale Law = Propaganda for public support Heaven = Environmental elements Earth = Terrain The Commander = Obviously you need a skilled one. But some good commanders have fatal flaws that could lead to disaster no matter how brilliant they are in other areas. Method and Discipline = You need a well trained and disciplined fighting force that will still be effective when Hell brakes loose and it will.
@@oldmandoinghighkicksonlyin1368 I don't think it has to do with shoddy workmanship on the part of the chinese. They had the know how, since they built incredible buildings. The thing with the romans is that they had a lot of of resources for logistics and every foot soldier had a lot of practice at building, since they are always building roads, forts, towers, siege engines and whatnot. Really, it wouldn't be until the 11th century that Europe would see the kind of engineering the romans could do, even in Italy. And maybe not even then.
@@thomaswright981 Not exactly. Most roman institutions (except for the church and a few others) crumbled along with the empire and much of classical writings lost for centuries. Much of medieval culture comes just as much from Germanic tribes that migrated on mass to the new territories. Franks, Visigoths, Lombard, Saxons. Not to mention that the Romans never went into eastern Europe, where they were influenced by Slavic and Steppe cultures. Of course, by the time Rome fell, the tribes had already being influenced by the empire, so there is that. Out of the top of my head, I think what roman influence made it self felt more strongly through christianism and some of it's law.
I read and finished this book...bitxh you honed the material. So far this is the best summary on the art of war by sun Tzu. How wonderful transcending the barrier of social life to military STRATEGY and then reverse it to work backwards? Be blessed blad
I've always wanted to read the art of war but I have terrible ADHD and mild-moderate Tourette's syndrome. Holding a book or focusing on its contents for long enough to read is very difficult. I appreciate this video highly.
"There is no instance of a country benefeating from participating in prolongued warfare." "Pff, tell me about it. Try explaining it to congress or presidents!"
It's no COUNTRY benefits from a prolonged war, many, in the right place with the power to use it, make their fortunes out of it. There were Americans selling to both sides during WW2, they got a bit quieter when the USofA joined in the fighting. ( their weapons were coming back at them, or at least the children of more powerful people )
I just found your channel today and am quickly burning through all your content. It's SO good! Any chance of you doin' a Book Of 5 rings video? Cheers!
Remember one thing in battle . Who it is that that commands your enemies generals . And you will know your real enemy . And not just those that appose you in the field . They are but soldiers .
idk how 1000s could fit in a wooden horse, but legend has it that maybe 2 dozen were inside, then waited till night, attacked when enemy was drunk and asleep and opened the gates from within.
I'd have thought a better example of 'Earth' would've been the Spartans stand against the Persians. I don't think there could be a better example in simplicity. There may be better that are a little more complicated. A better example of 'method and discipline' would be Roman Legions post Marius reforms.
@Dick Johnson value, rarity, and desire are hardly related to whether or not it is art. The mona lisa can be in everyone's house today, which has nothing to do with its artistic quality
@Dick Johnson if being crap makes it not art then all art is good, it also means that you can't do art poorly and that all art is by definition good, which is bad for communication reasons, and your definitions mean that war isn't an art. Please look up "art definition" on Google.
@ Curtis Warren BTW STOP BEGGING asked: "Half the world fighting for no reason: is this art?" It seems that it is: art (n.) etymologically akin to Latin arma "weapons." art (n.) from Latin artem (nominative ars) "work of art; practical skill; a business, craft," from PIE *ar(ə)-ti- (source also of Sanskrit rtih "manner, mode;" Greek artizein "to prepare"), suffixed form of root *ar- "to fit together." early 13c., "skill as a result of learning or practice," from Old French art (10c.), For questioned words I like to consult Etymonline. Words change their meaning through time and space. art (n.): In Middle English usually with a sense of "skill in scholarship and learning" (c. 1300), especially in the seven sciences, or liberal arts. This sense remains in Bachelor of Arts, etc. Meaning "human workmanship" (as opposed to nature) is from late 14c. Meaning "system of rules and traditions for performing certain actions" is from late 15c. Sense of "skill in cunning and trickery" first attested late 16c. (the sense in artful, artless). Meaning "skill in creative arts" is first recorded 1610s; especially of painting, sculpture, etc., from 1660s. As for this 2500 years old text, the title "Art of War" appeared in 20th century. Literal meaning of 孫子兵法 is "Master Sun's Military Methods". Personally, as an European and war victim, I think that War is inhuman activity. To quarrel with brothers and to fight with neighbours is human activity which majority dislikes and usually have ways to prevent or punish. To dress part of nation - males in their best years - in same uniforms, to force them to march and obey orders from the few, to take them far away and make them kill people they've never met - that's not natural human activity. Have a look on YT videos of Chinese, African, Russian etc army parade and you'll see somethning is odd here, extremely odd. And inhuman.
Different context of the word art. English is the worst language . Wayne Gretzky had skills and an art to his winning style of play. Bruce Lee was a martial artist. IMO the word art is meaning “nuances and strategies “ not something positive such as visual or musical arts. I agree with you ethically. 👁❤️🇨🇦
neither has 🇨🇳Xo Briben(& he still hasn't heard of it).@ least u aren't responsible for the kidz in your own country's armed forces death & injury & left $85billion in gear by & for the enemy.
44:16 Winning a war can easily be guaranteed...all you need is complete and total access to all the enemies intelligence. Yea, it's just that easy... I get the point, but this was a very specific fluke in military history.
Germanicus slaughtered all the factions and recovered two Legion Eagle standards. He had brought Germans to its knees and making huge insults in villages by using corpses, Tiberius recalled to Rome, some say Germanicus was too popular. Germanicus also captured Arminius pregnant wife.
To be honest Julius caesar only defeated Vercingetorix due to random chance and a single miscommunication. If not for the mistimed charge due to the communication error the Roman army would have been slaughtered. Alot of his notable victories came down to luck or a mistake by the enemy.
Lesson ??? Remember if you find yourself battling a bearded magical space wizard welding a sword that cuts through everything and he tells you its over he has the high ground... believe him and just keep floating down the river of lava then jump off.. in letting your ego get ahold you will just end up a triple amputee before you know what happens and further burnt extra crispy cause you've got 1 arm to climb a pile of loose gravel. This is something to be avoided just ask Darth iron lung over there
